Pope criticizes gay marriage- Margaret Canady

During an end of year speech, the Pope added his two cents to the debate over gay marriage. He warned that mankind itself was at stake as new concepts of the traditional family change and adapt to the 21st century.

"The question of the family...is the question of what it means to be a man, and what it is necessary to do to be true men," he said. The Pope spoke against gender theories such as those of feminist gender theorist Simone de Beauvoir. She believed that sex was no longer an "element of nature", meaning that people had the choice, socially, to choose for themselves.
The Pope cited France's chief Rabbi Gilles Bernheim, who has spoken against gay marriage. The Pope spoke often about the "traditional family", saying that gay marriage attacks the structure of a family.

Early next year, France's parliament will debate passing the "marriage for all" government-backed bill. Despite opposition from right and religious groups, the bill is expected to pass. Last Sunday, tens of thousands of demonstrators turned out in France to support legalizing both gay marriage and adoption for gay couples.

I think the Pope's statements are really ignorant. I personally believe in acceptance of gay marriage; while I can understand the Pope being against it for religious reasons, it is false, exaggerated and misleading to say that the whole population of humankind is at stake because of it! Legalizing gay marriage isn't going to make mankind come to a stop. Unfortunately, the Pope influences a whole religion. Catholics will try to oppose gay marriage, even as the world moves forward and embraces the legalization.

  1. This may sound harsh in the society that we live in now, but he is just defending what he knows. He is just supporting his way of life and the religion that he is committed too. We should be able to respect peoples choices when it comes to sexuality.

  2. I would agree that we should respect his choices, but it just so happens that he is the Pope. His decisions are going to overrule the choice of many other people. I don't think that one person should have control over that.

  3. I completely agree with both of you. Sexuality is something you can't choose, you're born with it. I believe that it is very wrong for one person to determine everything. What does the Pope know about other people's sexuality? Nothing. And for him to have final verdict on that absolutely sickens me.
