Sally Roberts, a New Zealander currently living in England,
has been fighting to keep her son from receiving radiotherapy. Roberts says
that she doesn’t want her seven year old son, who is suffering from a brain
tumor named medulloblastoma, to suffer from the harsh side effects of the
chemicals. After a legal battle in court, the judge ruled the boy to undergo
radiotherapy. She hid her son from the court for four days to avoid him receiving
treatment. The boy has already had surgery to remove the tumor and doctors say
the only way to ensure the tumor doesn’t return is by giving him treatment. Roberts
wanted to try different methods of making sure the tumor was gone, but doctors
say her methods were too risky and it’s unknown if they actually work.
I hope the hospital can pry the boy from her in time for him
to be saved by the treatment. I know it’s hard to deal with a loved one being extremely
sick and needing harsh chemicals, but I’d rather have my loved one alive and
recovering, than dead and chemical free.

This is really controversial. I can see why the mother would want to protect her child. Radiotherapy has harsh side effects, especially for a seven year old. However, if it is the only way to prevent the tumor from returning, the only way to ensure your son does not die, is there any other option besides allowing what is best for your child?
ReplyDeleteThe mother should be worried about her son's life so I understand why she doesn't want the harmful effects of the chemicals, but by preventing the treatmenmt he's most likely going to die.
ReplyDeleteI understand she does not want to risk it getting worse but she will never know if she does not try. Besides the other treatments are more risky than the radiation.
ReplyDeleteThat's just sad, and what about the seven year old? Doesn't he get a say in the treatment he receives?
