Russian world champion mixed martial arts fighter, Rasul Mirzayev, was convicted of causing the death of a Russian college student during a fight outside a nightclub here in August 2011. He was convicted of killing Ivan Agafonov, a 19-year-old Russian student. Mr. Mirzayev, a featherweight fighter who stands 5 feet 7 inches and weighs about 145 pounds, admitted punching Mr. Agafonov in the face after an exchange of words that is alleged to have included an insult concerning Mr. Mirzayev’s girlfriend. Mr. Agafonov fell, hit his head on a metal drain cover and died several days later. The dispute unfolded outside a nightclub, called Garage, where Mr. Agafonov had been drinking. Mr. Mirzayev originally faced a more serious charge punishable by up to 15 years in prison, but prosecutors requested that it be reduced.

ReplyDeleteI think this is really crazy. If you know that you have that type of training and power, you should walk away from a fight, but he was drunk so I guess he wasn't thinking straight
It is terrible that he died. Mr. Mirzayev wasn't trying to kill Mr. Agafonov, but Mirzavev should of been about to control his actions.
ReplyDeleteI think this should only count as manslaughter. He didn't mean to kill Ivan, but he did. He is at fault, but accidents do happen. This one just barely balances on the line between homicide and accident plus a conviction of assault. (Of course this is all coming from my many years of experience in criminal law practices...)
ReplyDeletethis is so sad, the teacher shouldve been able to control his actions.
ReplyDeleteThis is just one way of showing what alcohol can do to you. Since he had been drinking, this teacher could not control his actions......I think he is at fault.

ReplyDeleteSelf-control is obviously hard to maintain when you are under the influence of alcohol. Drink responsibly or not at all!!
Self control.. is hard. But violence is not the answer, and alcohol can cause some serious damage to the brain.
ReplyDeleteThis is unfortunate- I don't believe Mirzayev was trying to kill his student, it was just a series of unfortunate events. If there hadn't been drinking involved, the fight might not have happened.
ReplyDeleteThis is very devastating.I agree violence isn't the answer and he shouldn't have been drinking either because this would have probably stopped the fight from happening.
