Gun Growth in Airports by Zoey Crummey
This year there has been a significant increase in the amount of guns found in airports, especially at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Since May they have found four loaded guns attempted to be brought on the plane. The last discovery was earlier this week, when a man had a loaded gun in his carry on bag on his way to Vegas. The most recent discovery "brings the year-to-date total to 30," which is much more than previous years. The trend in Salt Lake City is happening all over the country. In the past eight years guns found by screeners have gone from "660 in 2005 to 1,556 in 2012." This year is catching up quickly, with 1,150 guns already discovered, a higher number than this point last year. The punishment of the passengers depends on where they are and the gun laws in that particular area.
In my opinion, the use of guns is getting out of hand. Our country needs to realize that by allowing the use of handguns, we are putting other people's lives in jeopardy. Just think about what would have happened if those guns hadn't been found, do we really need anymore tragedies in our country? Either the restrictions on guns are much more strict, or they should be banned completely.

Baby Shot in Stroller by Julia F
On Sunday evening in Brooklyn, New York a 1-year-old boy in his stroller and his parents were going for a walk. At around the time of 7:19 their baby boy was shot in the head and proclaimed dead by the hospital. They say that 18-year-old De'Marquise Elkins was the murderer of this child after him demanding money from his mother. He will have a life sentence to jail.
Because we know this article was created in between the day of and after the event occurred, there can always be more to the situation as time goes by and they figure out more and more. I've heard stories of people, bad people, asking another for money and them rejecting, leading to someone getting hurt. I feel this is another incident that goes along with it. As I read the article it occurred to me how careful we need to be while walking the streets and to be aware of our surroundings.

Legalization of Marijuana By Jackson Daughety
Uruguay is about to become the first country to legalize the use and production of Marijuana. The Uruguayan Chamber of Deputies has already passed the bill and it is now being taken to the senate. The government already has a plan on how to manage the new market, and they believe that it will actually benefit the country. This new idea has sparked because of the confusing drug law in place now. The law as of now says that marijuana use is legal, but any production is not. This is the main reason for the new law. The passing of the bill is very likely, due to the majority of an agreeing party. This, however, is not how the people feel. In one poll, a vast majority voted against the legalization of marijuana.
I feel like the legalization of marijuana is dependent on the legality of cigarettes. As far as I know, there is not a lot of differences. Uruguay did the right thing changing the law to make it more clear, but they could have illegalized it and also solved the problem. The point of the whole thing was not to legalize marijuana, but to be more consistent in the laws that are in place. Making sure laws make sense and don't contradict is very important and is definitely something that other countries could do. As for the legalization of marijuana, I don't think it would make a whole lot of difference either way in the long run.

Baby shot in stroller
SK Hatcher
In Brooklyn a 1 year old boy named Antiq was shot and killed in his stroller when his parents took him on a walk. Two days before this tragedy, the murderer of another 1 year old was convicted. This first murder was committed in march. Because of this bizarre connection the police believe that the murder of Antiq was sone by a copycat. Antiq's murderer has nor yet been found. There is a video to watch in the site link.
Personally, my family was heartbroken when we saw this. I don't know what kind if monster would shoot a baby- and why. This is one of the saddest stories I've ever heard and it frightens me that it happened twice in a 2 day period.
Natural Gas Fracking Controversy in the United States - by Frances Garnett
The United States has a strong possibility of becoming one of the most important energy suppliers in the next few years because of a new system called fracking, where steam and chemicals are shot into rocks to retrieve natural gas and oil. This process has had huge effects on the world, but especially in the States. Crude oil production here is more than it's been in twenty years, and the US could soon pass Saudi Arabia and Russia as the world's largest energy producer. However, fracking is very controversial because of its environmental impacts. There are concerns about the availability of fresh water, since the fracking of one oil well requires about five million gallons of water. Fracking has also already caused earthquakes in Ohio and the United Kingdom. Aside from that, using natural gas instead of coal has bad impacts as well. Natural gas contains methane, which is much worse for the environment than carbon dioxide. Unfortunately, that is the way the market is shifting. Financing will go to obtaining oil and natural gas instead of research for sustainable energy, like wind and hyrdo-power. Many scientists want these natural resources to go untouched, but that will be hard for politicians who want to make a profit and end the current economic struggles.
The main idea of the article is that because of fracking, the United States could become a leader in global energy, but this is dangerous because of the harmful effects it can have on the planet. This article was probably written to inform people about this new development in our world, but I think that it will influence the audience so that they'll think fracking is bad. I don't think this is intentional, because it's hard enough already to make oil or natural gas look good. I agree with the majority of scientists, saying that we shouldn't use these new resources. Reading this article has made me very anxious. A few months ago, I did a research project on oil, and began to realize how essential it is to our lifestyle. I wish more people would give money to research for sustainable practices, because if we keep going like we are (or if we increase our oil and natural gas consumption, now made possible by fracking), our society will eventually collapse, since fossil fuels aren't renewable, and climate change will be even more drastic and dangerous. Articles like these are extremely important to educate people

Progress' Report In Search For Human Remains At Florida Reform School
Title: 'Progress' reported in search for human remains at Florida reform school
Name: Ivana Castaneda
Summary: University of South Florida began its own research to find two graves at a former reform school in Florida's northwestern Panhandle, where students say they were abused. There were found two coffins, the first one was with cranial and teeth fragments and the other one will be opened later; the White House Boys is a group of survivors from the school, they say that students died at hands of staff. All the investigation will be concluded by Sunday.
Opinion: My opinion about this new is that cases will be happening if we don't make our security the primary thing. Also we have to believe, because the White House Boys called for an investigation into the graves five years ago.
