"Pulse Nightclub: Chilling 911 tapes capture killer's voice" -Ellen Whitehead

Recently, a suspicious phone call was made to 911. Omar Mateen called from a night club admitting that he was the shooter in Orlando. When asked his identity, he replied, "My name is I pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghadhi of the Islamic State." Confused by this message, 911 called back several times and were able to get a hold of Mateen. When asked what was going on in the night club he explained that he could "feel the pain of people getting killed in Syria and Iraq." The negotiators are still confused to these messages. I feel that Mateen did a responsible think admitting to what he had done, even though it was wrong. I'm not sure why he did it so "creepily," though.

Balwinder Sahni, a property developer in Dubai, bid 9 million dollars on a license plate bearing the number 5 at a government auction. I was on of the highest prices ever bid on a license plate but not outdoing the 14 million spent in 2008 by Abu Dhabi. the single-digit plates now occupy two of his six rolls royce cars. The other plate Sahni won at an auction last year for 6.7 million that has the number 9.

I think it this is a stupid thing to spend that much money on bc it could be going to more important things like charity not just a license plate which usually comes with a car. I don't understand the significance or importance of having a single-digit license plate. However i do think it's kinda cool that there actually a market for license plates that people are that devoted to.

The Lithuanian government just recently released a guide to all of its citizens on how to protect themselves and their country from Russian invasion. The fear of Russian invasion has always been a threat to Lithuania, because they once were taken over by Russia. My mom and my grandma, my mom is 1/2 Lithuanian but my grandma's parents were both from Lithuania, say they both remember  thinking that Lithuania would never get its independence from Russia when they would read the newspaper and listen to the news when they were younger. I think that this is a justified worry on Lithuania's part just given the fact of their past conflicts with Russia.

Fossilized dinosaur brain found in England?

A British paleontologist from the University of Cambridge's Department of Earth, Dr. David Norman works with a team of international researchers who worked on and analyzed the fossil of the Dino's brain found by an amateur fossil hunter by the name of Jamie Hiscocks. Dr Norman believed that finding the cause of the Dino's death would be the key in finding how it was preserved. "Of course, dinosaurs have brains. But the discovery is amazing, in itself, because of the rarity of preserving soft-tissue in terrain animals because they decay so quickly," said Dr. Norman to CNN. Dr Norman believes the brain was preserved because of the swamp-like environment's low oxygen levels, where the Dino died, that mixed with acidity which is known to slow decay and preserve soft tissue.
This truly is an amazing discovery being the first fossilized Dino brain.

Cell Phones Keeping Teens Awake by Victoria Valdez

Using cell phones, tablets and computers at night are keeping teens awake and unable to sleep.  Research shows that using these items before bed interrupts sleep time and sleep quality.  It appears that the light and sounds may be too stimulating resulting in daytime fatigue.  The light may also affect the internal clock of teens and delay the release of melatonin which disrupts the sleep cycle.  Limiting technology is essential for a good nights rest.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/31/health/kids-sleep-screens-tech/

I am guilty of using a cell phone right before going to sleep.  I do believe that this research is onto something and quite possibly it would be of a benefit to not use electronics right before bedtime.  It is a hard thing to do but will probably be well worth it.

Hope for Peanut Allergies by Victoria Valdez

Peanut allergies are a very serious issue which can turn deadly quickly.  People with this allergy cannot be around even a trace of peanuts.  However, there is now hope for this type of allergy.  Researchers have developed a patch that might help with peanut reactions.  The patch releases peanut proteins into the skin which build a tolerance.  After testing, the patch proves more effective on children than on older people.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/31/health/peanut-allergy-skin-patch/

This is an interesting development in peanut allergies.  This can give so many people hope to avoid a potentially deadly reaction to peanuts.  I'm sure the parents of small children will be equally excited that this product is in development.  Maybe one day peanut allergies can be a thing of the past.

Scientists have created a plant that  can detect bombs. This plant was made to pick up chemicals which are found in landmines. To read the plants they shine a laser on the leafs, which is seen with a small infrared camera. The plants created can utilized for defense applications, and,"to monitor public spaces for terrorism related activities," said Prof Strano. This plant can emit a signal from about meter away from the plant.

This article was very interesting, though I didn't understand some of the scientific vocabulary. Also, there was about 1 misspelling error, but it was all an overall very informational article.

Guy spends $9,000,000 on a license plate!
Balwinder Sahni, A property developer in Dubai decided he wanted to buy the highly wanted license plate with the single digit 5. Dubai is an oil rich country who's Wealthy and willing to pay millions just to get a single digit license plate. Although this is a crazy ammount of money, and one of the largest ammounts of money ever spent on a license plate, it is still lower than the purchase made by the record holder Abu Dhabi. I still can't believe anyone would spend that much on a darn license plate, they must be some of the worlds richest people.
Would you spend that much on a license plate if you had the money?

Holden Daniels Post: Pulse nightclub: Chilling 911 tapes capture killer's voice

http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/31/us/orlando-pulse-911-calls/index.html

ORLANDO, Fla. — The 911 call began with about six seconds of Arabic, and then Omar Mateen switched to English: “I want to let you know, I’m in Orlando, and I did the shooting.”
The words, among the first from four recordings that the City of Orlando released on Monday, were spoken on June 12 as Mr. Mateen laid siege to the Pulse nightclub here. And in an array of tones — even and calm at first, then at turns impassioned, incredulous and threatening — Mr. Mateen used his conversations with a dispatcher and a police negotiator to claim that the attack was the work of the Islamic State and to warn, deceptively, of nearby bombs.

This guy is crazy and is a horrible man thank god he confessed and is in police custody.

10/24/16 Skin Patches for Peanut Allergies- Theresa Dvorocsik

http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/31/health/peanut-allergy-skin-patch/index.html

Over the course of a year, researchers from the Consortium of Food Allergy Research tested 74 peanut-allergic volunteers, ages 4 through 20, to see whether a daily Viaskin peanut patch could help raise their peanut threshold. This patch, called epicutaneous immunotherapy, released peanut proteins into the participants' skin, building cellular tolerance to the nuts

The results showed that participants who received higher doses of peanut protein in the patch were able to consume more peanuts after a year. The patch was the most effective on children ages 4 to 11 and significantly less effective on older participants, according to a statement from the National Institutes of Health, which funded the study through its National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

This is incredibly interesting to me because I have a life-threating peanut allergy and my allergist and I have been looking for solutions for years and this might be a new one. I do immunotherapy for my allergies like cats, grass, and other outdoor allergies, but my peanut allergy is so severe it has never been safe to try.

When she was gonna turn in the papers they caught her and told her the papers were due 6 weeks ago.

I think this is really bad because she was just trying to teach her child and she was given false information.

If he expects to win the election, then he needs to keep his mouth shut, because we don't need a president with a smart mouth.

A man who had been running around Oklahoma for a week robbing and killing people finally was killed in a shoot out. This all started when he shot two police officers. Later they found out he killed two of his relatives as well. Police have been searching for him and they have found him but unaware that that was him they were shot and it gave him enough time to get away from the officers. This man's name is Micheal Vance and he is 38years old. Also this week during the investigation he posted on Facebook live about him shooting the officers and needing to steal another car. Which he did end up stealing a women's car who he killed to get the car and because of how he robbed her that helped the police figure out the car he was in and eventually find him and the only way they got him was with a shootout and he died in that.
I think that this is so sad that there are people out in the world like this. I'm happy they found him and it's unfortunate that he died but he got what he deserved.

Bombing in Nigeria- Hannah Niara

Females suicide bombers have been suspected due to the two explosions this past Saturday in the Nigerian city, Maiduguri. The explosion took place near a refugee camp and a fuel depot. The bombs were targeted at the city's Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons camp. A few minutes after the first bomb the rescue team reported that five people were killed. Ten minutes after this, only a mile away, another bomb set off, leaving 3 more people dead, and 7 injured. All together 9 lives were taken and 24 of them were seriously injured. Although I have never witnessed a bombing I know that the feeling of seeing and witnessing or even being in one must be a terrible feeling. The only way to prevent things like this happening in the future is to set up security that will be  able to detect when others are planting harmful things in places where citizens are everyday. I hope that everyone who was wounded recover fast, and that the families of those who lost their life get there answers as to who did this terrible thing to their loved ones.

American Airlines engine fails - Lauren Rothert

On Saturday October 28th, an American Airlines plane departing from Chicago O'Hare International Airport caught fire on the runway. The fire was due to the right engine failing, it sent debris half a mile away. 161 passengers and nine crew members were aboard the plane just before takeoff. There were only minor injuries due to rushing down the emergency slides. Luckily, the fire happened before the plane took off, if it were to happen in the air the accident could have been devastating.

I believe that accidents like these should never happen. It shows that the planes were not properly tested before being put out on the runway. This is not the first time something like this has occurred, there have been other Boeing jet incidents like this in the last 13 months. American Airlines and Boeing will be receiving a lot of attention from outside sources to get input on the fire.

A homeschool mom is sentenced to six months in jail for a minor paperwork mistake. She was sentenced to 180 days in jail for not submitting her paper work in on time. As she pulled her son out of school, around January of 2015, the school told her she had to give him a end of the year assesment, and to turn in it, but she was told that there was no deadline for it. In September of 2015 the mom was preparing to to send in her paperwork when she was notified that it was due August 1, but was told there was no due date.

Meaning her child was counted absent for 6 weeks, and that turned into a court date. As she was charged with "Contributing to the delinquency" of a minor. I honestly believe she doesn't deserve to be in jail, because it is the schools fault. They told her that there was no due date, which lead her to believe she could of turned it in whenever needed or ready to do so. That's honestly not fair to her or her child.

Kate Boyer: Two Earthquakes Strike Italy

In August of 2016, an earthquake struck Italy killing almost 300 people. On Wednesday October 26, 2 more devastating earthquakes hit Italy. The recent ones were 2 hours apart, the first one having a magnitude of 5.5 and the second having a magnitude of 6.1 and both took place southwest of the city of Visso. Thankfully we have yet to hear any injuries caused by these earthquakes. However, San Salvatore, an old historic church from the 15th Century, suffered severe damage leaving it unrecognizable. The city of Visso is in ruins and many people who's houses are destroyed are having to camp out in tents.

Measles vaccine - TEAGHAN ORTEGA

https://www.google.com/amp/www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/amp/fatal-measles-complication-killed-patients-years-later-n674706?client=safari

The measles is a deadly virus that you usually get around the age of 3 months to 7 years. Still some get it while they are older. The measle outbreaks come from people bringing the virus over from different countries. A new virus that I linked to measles is starting to kill people that get the measle at a young age. This is called SSPE. Is slowly kills your nervous system without you knowing that anything is wrong. People have been starting to get this type of measles more often because of the vaccine that you are given to prevent the measle from coming in your body. Scientist are now trying to find a cure but it is very hard to know who has it and if it is as contagious as the measle virus is.

I think this is so sad because thier is no way to prevent this virus from getting in your body. I never got the measles but if I did have it when I was younger I would definitely be worried that the SSPE is in my body. Sicknesses suck and are hard to keep track of but I guess the only thing that we can do is live in the moment and try to find ways to stay healthy.

Kate Boyer: Is the issue of piracy fading?

Arnel Balbero, one of the 26 released hostages, tells his story about being held captive for four and a half  years by Somali pirates, one of the longest times the pirates have ever held people captive. Balbero was part of a Taiwanese fishing vessel with a crew of 29 men, and in march of 2012, the ship was attacked by a group of Somali pirates. 3 of the men died including the captain of the vessel throughout the time span of their captivity. Since then, the number of recorded piracy attacks have significantly reduced, and there hasn't been a successful attack on a large ship since. Many people near the Somalia haven't allowed men to fish on commercial ships in fear of them being captured. This creates a very big problem, considering the fact that the fishing industry brings in the majority of the income.
I think this is terrifying and feel so bad for the people and their families who had to endure this terrible experience. I knew that pirates were still around today, but I had no clue it was to this extent. It is, however, good that no attacks have happened for nearly 5 years.

Melanie Escalante- new information on the robbery involving Kim Kardashian

We've all noticed Kim Kardashian hasn't been on any social media and has rarely gone out the house. This is due to a robbery that took place on October 3rd in Paris, France. Finally, we have received small detail about this night from a concierge who was with her at the time of the incident. Abdulrahman, the concierge, revealed that the thieves originally wanted money but Kardashian proceeded by giving up her jewelry. The robber put the possessions in his half open backpack which is why the jewels fell to the hotel floor. There have been no arrests made but the police are still investigating the case.

There was[is] talk that the reason for the incident was because of a picture that the celebrity posted of her valuable ring. Obviously someone that famous and well known has wealth so in my opinion, posting pictures or not, you can be a target. Even if you're not famous or not wealthy, you could still be a target. You should never blame the victim since they already have to deal with the trauma that follows.

Mica Stout | Police give himself a ticket

On September 8, 2016 Tim Grover, Haines City police officer, violated traffic laws by running a red light. Looking back at the video in October, he was actually looking at traffic violations, but found himself breaking the law. While watching the video he remembered that he turned left on the intersection while the light turned from yellow to red, and all he wanted to do was get lunch. He later told the station that he confirmed it was his patrol car and got himself a $160 ticket and a letter of reprimand.

Quote by Glover: "I've always been taught that if you've done somethin wrong, to take responsibility for what you've done and accept your punishment."

I think that honestly IS policy and Tim was doing the right thing even if it paid a price (literally and metaphorically). When you lie it will haunt you and it's easier to just confess what you've done.

Grace Biltz - Week 10 Post

Finally after 5 years, success for the environment! The world's largest protected marine area was established in Antarctica. Twenty-four countries and the European Union finally came together to form this reserve, that was in international waters, to protect the environment and 10,000 unique animal species. The species included penguins, whales, seals, krill, and colossal squid. The new rules will ban fishing, but allow for scientific research.

The marine area called the Ross Sea Region will be protected for 35 years. This was a compromise since Russia and China wanted fishing rights. Despite this compromise, it is a great success for the environment and the animals that live in it. Greenpeace, an environmental organization, is pushing for protection for at least 30% of ocean habitats.

I think this is terrific. We should do more to protect the environment and the animals that live in it. I don't think we do enough to help protect our Earth, but every step we take is progress!

These birds are known to fly from Europe to sub-Saharan Africa and not touch the ground. The fact that some birds continuously fly during their non-breeding period suggests that the species doesn't need to land for sleep. Researchers suggest that one reason that these birds stay in flight for so long may be because of its diet. What do you think?

Summary

A man, the name of Ahmed shot his wife 8 times which sadly ended her life. This incident happened in a parking lot in front of a Starbucks at night. Ahmed is getting a very deserved sentence and is held  up to a $525,000 bond.

Analysis

I think that this is terrible. Nobody deserves to die this way or ever be in this situation and feel the pain she must've felt. I hope that this man gets a large sentence in which he won't be getting out of prison any time soon.

American respect for police reaches highest level in 50 years

Recently a lot of us have questioned our local police. Especially with the racist incidents and unreasonable shootings. A new study has shown that 76% of people report having a great amount of respect for our local heroes we call the police. Many people explain how although some systems are corrupt they respect those who save lives instead of taking them. Let's hope the world becomes a better place soon.

180 day jail sentence for small mistake on paperwork by Ashley Mendoza

In Columbus,Ohio a mother was sentenced 180 days in jail for a minor paperwork mistake for homeschooling her kid. She, who was homeshooled herself, knew nothing about it and decided to call the school for more information. She was told there was no deadline, and turned it in late.To the state it looked like the kid was not attending public school, so the mother was convicted of truancy.
In my opinion, it's ridiculous that one small mistake on a piece of paper that she knew nothing about will make her spend 180 days in jail.

Justin Timberlake's voting selfie had cause a lot of drama recently. The singer posted a picture of him after voting and got in trouble. It is illegal in some places to take pictures in Voting booths. You can be fined up to $50 and a 30 day jail sentence. Luckily, the person who accused him had no right and it was an unissued man.

"NJ dad jumps from bridge holding 2 kids; he dies, they live" -Ellen Whitehead

A man was found dead, with his two alive, non severely injured children, below a bridge in New Jersey. The story is not clear yet. Police officers are unsure of whether he threw his children off the cliff and then jumped, or if he jumped of the cliff carrying his two children. Miraculously, some trees below the bridge caught the children fall, therefore leaving them not badly injured. However, the father was found dead. His wife exclaims that her and the father got in a fight and he threatened to hurt their children and took them to his car and drove away. Whether he threw his children, then jumped or jumped with his children, it's a terrible thing for him to do, attempting to take his and his children's lives.

First Women ever to Climb Mount Everest Dies at 77- Hannah Niara

Junko Tabei was the first women ever to climb the 29,000 feet high Mount Everest in 1975. In 1992 she also climbed what we know as the "Seven Summits. Theses seven summits were Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Aconcagua, Vinson, Everest, Denali, and Carstensz Pyramid. Her last mountain climbing experience was in 2011 when she climbed Japan's Mount Fuji with some of her school students.
Junko Taebi died this past Thursday due to cancer that she'd been fighting for over three years she was 77 years old.
I think that Junko Taebi is a wonderful role model for people who are very adventurous and want to spend their time conquering things that nobody else would ever want to do. Also to be a woman and still be able to do this gives all women in this world hope to know that no matter our gender we can still do accomplish anything we want.

On Tuesday, October 18, Queensland's Dreamworld Amusement Park had a serious ride malfunction. Their Thunder River Rapids ride malfunctioned, killing four people. They were two men, age 35 and 32, and two women, age 42 and 38. This led to the park being closed and the staff working with the police to determine the facts. It's scary to me that things labeled fun for the whole family can hold such dangerous potential.

Aeva Ramirez #2, Violating anti-vaccine parents

In Colorado, the Department of public health and environment are forcing parents who do not believe in vaccines to sign a form basically admitting that they're wrong. Many people believe that this is violating the parents first amendment and many people are protesting. The HSDLA filed a lawsuit but the charges have been dropped. Many people are banding together and have signed a petition with 16,000 signatures.

This really hits home with me and I believe this is really wrong. There has been scientific evidence that proves how bad shots can be. I grew up in house hold that doesn't support government approved shots and believes in a more natural way of healing. I have great health and have actually not had to suffer from a lot of sicknesses that my friends have gone through even when receiving shots to fight them off. My mom said she would sign it if it protected me and kept me in school, but it would never change her beliefs. A parent raises their child with their health in mind and my mom has defiantly done that.

Saving The Whales?

October 24th
Olivia Martin

After years and years of battling in court over this issue, it's already back again. Japanese whaling fleets recently returned to what was supposed to be a whale sanctuary and killed over 300 minke whales, and more than half of them where pregnant. They claim that what they do is for scientific purposes, but no one is buying it. Organizations like the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling have always been clashing with the Japanese on this problem, and work towards ending the cruelty of what whaling companies do.

We need to take the protection of whales and any other creature for that matter seriously. Whales don't need to be killed just to be 'studied'. They are an endangered species, and that's mainly because of human activity. Whales are hunted to the point of near extinction, and that's really awful. These commercial companies are destructing what should be an area of protection for this species, so how can we protect our oceans and its life when we can't even preserve this sanctuary?

Dead or Alive singer Pete Burns has died aged 57 after suffering a cardiac arrest, his management has said. A statement on Twitter said it was with "greatest sadness" that it had to break the "tragic news" that Burns died suddenly on Sunday. Burns had a hit with You Spin Me Round in 1985 and appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2006. The management statement said: "All of his family and friends are devastated by the loss of our special star."
This is deeply devastating to many whom he was their idol. I know as a kid my father looked up to him and was in shock when he heard the news of his death.

Hundreds Of Migrants Moved From "Jungle" Camp - Mila Fisher

Over 7,000 migrants have been cleared from a jungle camp in Calais. French authorities are working hard to find out how many individuals were traveling alone versus with family, and trying their best to reunite all that have been separated. Most of the migrants voluntarily lined up peacefully to be processed, but some have concerns that they will not get to the UK. At the request of the french, the process of transferring around 1,300 unaccompanied children has halted, but not before nearly 200 children had been brought to the UK. Adil from Sudan says this:

"My dream is dead, the people you see here, they are broken. We can't believe it's over."

These people have gone through so much, they deserve a chance at a new life. Hopefully they will all find better living conditions and an opportunity to earn a living. It's a relief to find a government interested in helping these people get out of the jungle.

As we all know celebrities do get the chance to vote in the elections, but some celebrity figures like to make it public. This meaning some even like to back up one of the candidates in the running to become president. In specific Jay Z is headlining a concert on behalf of Hilary Clinton the day before elections. He said he wanted to do this event to target specifically young black voters into voting for Clinton. But Jay Z isn't the only celebrity who is wanting people to vote for Clinton. Miley Cyrus went around George Mason University and knocked on the college kids doors and hoping that her being famous could convince them to vote for Clinton.
I think this good publicity could really positively affect her in the elections.  Honestly I'm not a fan of either candidates but I think Hilary is a better option than Donald. Hopefully all these celebrities can convince their fans to vote for Clinton instead of Trump.

Aeva Ramirez, Homeschool mom almost sent to jail

In Columbus, Ohio a Homeschool mom was almost sent to jail for six months due to miscommunication. The mother was sent a notice from the school district about the "end of the year assessment," which basically proves that your child have been thriving in their new educational environment. The mother did not know much about this, so she called up the school to find out more. The school told her that all she needed to do was to file the assessment and that there was no due date. The mother later received a notice telling her that the deadline was August 1, which she quickly submitted after the notice and the school excepted if with no problems. The mother was later summoned to court for "contributing to the delinquency" of a minor. Even though her child had scored in the 97th percentile on a standardized evaluation test. The HSLDA are pretty sure that the charges will be dropped as long as she can meet the agreements.

I think its ridiculous that the mother is going through so much trouble. There was some miscommunication on the schools part and now the mother is suffering for it. Her child scored a 97% on the standard testing and the paperwork was later submitted, so it's crazy that this mother is going to court for basically child neglect when there is apparent evidence that this is not true. I understand that the court must go through certain regulations but to drag this case out seems unnecessary.

John Oliver Offers Bet with Donald Trump- Victoria Gonzalez Current Event

Last Week Tonight Show Host,  John Oliver, has always had an interesting past with Republican Candidate, Donald Trump. For a couple of years the two have argued about each other like when Donald Trump said John Oliver invited him onto his show but that he declined because he had never heard of it. Meanwhile John Oliver has said that he never intends to invite Donald Trump onto the show and has even had certain episodes in which he explains why Donald Trump is so ridiculous and why Hilary Clinton is a much better option despite her own flaws. But on October 23, when John Oliver had yet another show he offered Donald Trump a bet he believed he couldn't refuse. After Trump said years ago that the Academy Awards was rigged for The Apprentice not receiving an award, John Oliver said that if Trump loses he will give him an Academy Award previously won by Last Week Tonight. So that way, "even if he loses he still wins something".

Kate Boyer-French Refugee Camp Demolition Plans

Refugee camps are all over the world, there is a particular one evicting residents on Monday, located in Calais, France, and nicknamed "The Jungle". These refugee camps last for years and many people have grown to call this one their home. However, the government cannot afford to indefinitely supply the resources needed for the near 7,000 residents. But resources are not the only reason for the demolition of the camp. When people live in refugee camps, they are not given the opportunity to have a job or leave their enclosure. Knowing this, the French government has made plans to process the refugees and move them out of the camp before the planned removal in December.
I think it is tragic that these people have to wait so long to have there case of seeking asylum heard. These people are given a choice, but each one definitely has a downside. When seeking asylum, they not only have to go to a new camp and wait longer, but they could also be denied access to the country and deported home. On the other hand, going back to your home country forces them to face the risk of being killed which is the whole reason why they left in the first place. I think the government has the right idea, and I completely agree with what they're doing, but I think they should provide more resources to the processing of the refugees so they do not have to stay in the camps for so long.

Mica Stout | Murder of Argentinian girl wakes up the nation

16-year-old Lucia Perez was abducted from her school in Mar del Plata on October 8, 2016. She was drugged by a gang before they took her away. They raped and impaled Lucia with "unspecified objects" by which she died from bleeding out from her internal injuries. The members of the gang washed her, put her clothes back on and dropped her off at a rehab clinic where she passed away the next day. It was said to be "one of the most savage, cruel murders." The police arrested Matias Gabriel Farias (23), and Juan Pablo Offdani (41) to be held in custody for the murder. The third is being held because he is said to be the crime coverer. The brutality of this murder is being protested across the country and women are wearing black to express their concern in the rate of female murders taking place in Argentina. The Supreme Court says that 235 women were killed in an act of violence in 2015, which means a murder every 36 hours.

I have no words for this article because it's heartbreaking even though I don't know Lucia. No one ever deserves anything like this to ever happen in their life!

A light aircraft on a French customs surveillance operation crashed in Malta shortly after takeoff Monday, killing all five people on board.
Passengers on a nearby flight waiting to depart watched in horror as flames shot out and a dark plume of smoke billowed from the wreckage.

Malta is an island in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. Its sad that this has happened but since its a small island thats probably the reason they were riding in such a small plane because the smaller planes have a higher risk of a crash.

Near Mosul, Iraq Hundreds of ISIS fighters are fleeing Mosul in Iraq and crossing into neighboring Syria as coalition forces close in on the city, a powerful tribal leader in the region says. Sheikh Abdullah Alyawer, a tribal leader in the town of Rabia, on Iraqs border with Syria, told CNN Monday that dozens of ISIS militants and their families were fleeing the city each day, and crossing into Syria at Baaaj, an ISIS-controlled crossing point south of Sinjar. Coalition forces celebrated better-than-expected territorial gains over the weekend and artillery fire pummeled ISIS positions in the encircled town of Bashiqa early Monday morning in the relentless push for Mosul. One week into Mosul operation, all objectives met thus far, and more coalition airstrikes than any other 7-day period of war against ISIL, he wrote on Twitter, using another name for ISIS. Smoke rises from an ISIS position after a coalition airstrike in Mosul on October 18.

Elle Holland Current Event #9

On sunday, a tour bus returning from a casino crashed into the rear of a semi-tractor trailer in Palm Springs, California killing 13 people and injuring 31 people. The bus driver was among those killed and the driver of the truck was injured. As of now it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in this accident. The bus was going significantly faster than the trailer that ran into the back.

This just goes to show how safe and careful we need to be on the roads. Problems with drinking and texting while driving are getting worse and worse and i believe this is a wake up call. Drivers need to take more caution and be aware of what's happening on the road especially when they have multiple peoples lives on the line. I am so sad that so many of the people on that buses lives were taken and hopefully this will be the turning loin tofu better conditions.

This is very sad to hear since many people lost their lives from this crash. Car accidents are very common but this one is particularly sad because so many people were killed or injured.

Australian Swimmer with cancer - Lauren Rothert

Mack Horton, Olympic gold medalist, found out that his mole was a little more than just a mole. He was advised to get it checked out by a fan after the Rio Olympics. The fan sent an email to the swim team doctor recommending Mack to get it looked at. Taking his supporter's advice he went to the doctor and found out it was melanoma. Mack Horton is very grateful to this fan and now he is more aware of his health.

This fan did an amazing thing for the Australian swimmer. It is unfortunate that Mack took the mole lightly and did not think to get it checked on. Hopefully in the future, he is more self aware and will realize when something could be potentially dangerous.

Tour Bus of Death... - Caleb Gutierrez

A tour bus headed home to Los Angeles from a casino slams into a semi-truck killing 13 and injuring 31. Authorities said that the tour bus was going much faster than the semi-truck. It is not known if drugs, alcohol, or fatigue played a part in the crash or not. The driver of the tour bus was killed and the driver of the semi-truck received minor injuries. The 1996 tour bus did not have any seat belts, or a black box. So the exact speed will remain a mystery.

The tour bus had no seat belts which is a huge deal, vehicles should not be able to drive on the road without seat belts, that is the reason that 13 people died. Seat belts save lives. Click it or ticket.

Presidential Debate #3 by Juliet Stowe

Presidential Debate #3
By; Juliet Stowe

As many people know this past Wednesday the third presidential debate took place, starring Secretary Hillary Clinton and Mr. Donald Trump. Many topics were widely discussed during the debate but a few stuck out as key deciding factors in the voting polls. Mr. Donald Trump revealed (though not for the first time) the he will support pro-life. He also said that if he were in charge he would appoint pro-life judges in the supreme court. On the other hadn't Hillary Clinton said that she is a supporter of the pro-choice movement, and that she believes what someone does with their body is between them and their doctor.

I think that is very important because it is one of the many issues that America is divided on and which candidate is elected will very likely decide if abortion is made legal or not. Since the states are so divided on this topic I think its going to also bring on some tension between those who support pro-life and pro-choice. As a strong supporter of pro-choice I think that this decision should be made with great care and consideration for all of the women who have to live with the choices politicians made for them.

Current Events: Fugitive Police Chief in Mexico Caught
In November of 2014, 43 Mexican students were abducted under the order of the local mayor, Jose Luis Abarca. Abarca claimed that he did not want the students disrupting an event that his wife was holding so his men kidnapped them. The students were turned over to a gang that accused the students of being a rival gang so they killed all of the students and burned their bodies. Finally, two years later, one of the main men involved with the abduction and murder of 43 students has been caught. His name is Felipe Flores and he was a former police chief of Iguala. He covered for other police officers that were involved with the case and was directly involved with their kidnapping.

This is such a horrific story and I can’t believe that a city’s   mayor would order the kidnapping of 43 students, just so his wife’s event wouldn’t be disturbed. This is an example of an event that happened in the absolute worst case scenario for sure. The mayor did not intend for the kids to wind up dead, but the gang that the kids were given to thought they were rivalries, so they were killed. I wonder why the faulty police officers that abducted the kids never told the gang who they actually were. If someone would have done that, it would have saved a lot of heartache. I hope that everyone involved with this case gets caught.

Grace Biltz - Week 9 Post

Art can make a difference! An art piece named the "Smog Free Project," made by Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde, is actually an extra-large air purifier. Right now it is "cleaning that air" in a park in Beijing, China.
The piece acts like a vacuum and is powered by wind energy. It not only attracts smog particles, but it also compresses the smog particles into small "jewels." These jewels can be used to make rings and cuff links.
Roosegaarde wants to motivate others to think about the causes of pollution and creative ways to address it. He plans to build more towers and install them in many other cities.

I think this "Smog Free Project" is a creative way to help purify and clean the air. I think it is amazing how it is powered by wind energy. Also, it is great how we can recycle these smog particles and use them it a non-pollutant way like making jewelry.

Actress and comedian Kevin Meaney died at his home in Forestburgh, New York on Friday. Cause of death is known but not stated. You may have seen him on late night tv, The tonight show, the sitcom "Uncle Buck", Saturday Night Live, or on his HBO special. He also had future performances planned and a healthy career.

Although I did not know of him or his work before, I know this could've been anyone's inspiration or role model. You never know the lives he could've touched or how much people are mourning his loss. Especially his close friends and family. He made people laugh and provided them with entertainment, I hope he can rest in peace.

Janette Davalos :: Georgia Home Invasion

Analysis : Honestly it makes me mad when adults have the nerve to invade someones home. Although, in this case two children died! You can't really blame the kids because the eldest was 15, which is old enough to be home alone for a couple of hours, in my opinion. The kids should've paid more attention, thankfully 3 other siblings there called the police.

Summary: On October the 22nd it was confirmed that two children died of a home invasion in Georgia. There were five kids and the two that passed were: 15 year old Daveon Coates and 11 year old Tatiyana Coates. It was reported that one of the 5 siblings heard shooting and immediately called 911.

People do very crazy things such as running around naked on the streets to eating people and themselves do to the name, "zombie drug."  I think they should definitely go through Florida to wipe out this drug so no one else gets hurt. The physical side affects are the pealing of your skin and bleeding out from the inside out. This drug has rat poison which if it kills rats imagine what it's doing to your body. People can be so stupid with what they put in their bodies. I wander who would make such a drug and keep profiting off of it to this day. DONT DO DRUGS!:)

Due to the Clown attacks that have been happening around the U.S. ,all Target stores online and in stores will be removing Clown mask sales.Target has removed most Clown mask but more of the gore type because they are the one that are being used for these attacks. The attacks that been happening like the scaring, robberies and terrorizing in Dallas and many other places. They think that having these mask will make a very big commotion this Halloween.I think this was a very wise decision to make because there is a big ruckus about the controversial problem because of the clown sightings.

The latest police attack happened only awhile ago, but this time it was the citizen attacking the officers. Forty one year old Adam Powell attacked 2 officers outside a coffee shop. Powell attempted to shoot the officers with a loaded weapon, but to failed to fire. The officers gun didn't malfunction as the shot him after chasing him for about 100 ft.  Lucky for them the California officers weren't harmed.

This article was very informational. There were many unnecessary stories about attacks on officers that I felt didn't really focus on the main point here.

Mica Stout | 85 yr. old runner finishes marathon in 4 hours

85 year old Ed Whitlock ran a marathon on October 16,2016. He crushed the world record for his age group, and beat his own record by 30 minutes. He was able to run this Toronto marathon because he realized that there's no need to do everything that most successful athletes do. Whitlock said that he "didn't follow what typical coaches say about serious runners..."  This meant nothing like ice baths, massages, and heart rate monitors. Although he doesn't do most of these things, he is completely for them, and doesn't feel that they are necessary to him. Another coach/trainer Nathan Helming says that the most important thing to do is take care of your body, if you do that, you are almost guaranteed to be able to run as long as you want. Also it's very important to have good posture in everything you do because if you sit slouched down in chairs, it could transfer into your running. Fortunately for Whitlock, he has arthritis, but running is actually helping both his knees.

This is a great article to read because it shows that you could live a longer healthier life if you just keep your body healthy and exercise often. It's good to know that there are people that want to live a better life and live it as long as possible.

MARCUS CONTRERAS CURRENT EVENT #8 10/17/16

Things that are banned under Ethiopia’s state of emergency

Activists in the country's Oromia region has been holding demonstrations since last November, and protesters from the Amhara region have also joined in. The deaths of at least 55 people at an Oromo religious festival on 2 October triggered fresh unrest, including the targeting of some foreign-owned businesses.
You can’t use your phone, watch TV, protest, no political gestures, there is a curfew, diplomats can only travel a certain amount, and no guns.

Police beaten by suspect doesn't shoot by Ashley Mendoza

Police officer, name unknown, was being beaten by Parta Huff. Huff crashed into a liquor store and needed immediate help, however, he made it clear he didn't want any and struggled against police. He beat a ,name unknown, officer who refused to shoot him when her life was in danger claiming "she didn’t want her family or the department to have to go through the scrutiny the next day on the national news.”
I think she did the right thing, shooting the man would only make matters worse. I'd assume she would rather deal with the pain right then and there than face the consequences for the rest of her life. Besides, there was no reason to shoot him if he was unarmed and there were other officers present.

Trump calls himself a victim- By Valerie garcia (current event #8)

For the past days women have been speaking up saying that Trump has forced himself on them and groping them. Trump has spoke up and said all the allegations were false.
This could make trump possibly lose voters even if its 5% or 10% his polls could go below hillary. If these allegations are true which in my opinion are i don't think a man who takes women as possessions rather than people should become president. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2016/10/14/politics/donald-trump-sexual-assault-allegations/index.html

Nazi Republicans Leave Town or Else -Alex Travell

http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/16/politics/north-carolina-gop-office-vandalized/?iid=ob_homepage_deskrecommended_pool

A GOP office in North Carolina was firebombed this weekend, and this act of terror was an "assault on our democracy" according to Gov. Pat McCrory.

I thought of this article as another terror story until it said, a swastika was left and the words, "Nazi Republicans leave town or else" were spray painted on an adjacent building. After reading this, I begin to question our presidential candidates even more than before, for at this point, I don't know what to believe anymore.

"George Zimmerman road rage incident: Man sentenced in shooting" -Ellen Whitehead

In May of 2016, a road rage occurred to where Matthew Apperson followed and threatened George Zimmerman by flashing his lights, honking, etc. Apperson then pulled up beside Zimmerman and shot at him but missed. Thinking he had killed Zimmerman, Apperson then "celebrated" the fact that he had killed him. He had no respect for him. In the trials, Apperson turned the story around and claimed that Zimmerman was threatening him. However, Zimmerman had committed second-degree murder in 2013 so the odds were stacked against him. Apperson was voted guilty and sent to jail for 20 years. I feel that if people made a mistake they should own up to it rather than making a bigger deal out of it. Apperson should've admitted to it instead of making up his own story and causing confusion and wasting time.

The world's oldest panda recently died in Hong Kong. Jia Jia was 38 years old and had been in the zoo for 17 years. In an interview several workers claimed the animal had had a massive decrease in food consumption and was deteriorating quickly. On Sunday, her health took a toll for the worse- she laid around all day unable to move and the worker decided the best thing to do would be put her down. This happened at 6pm.

The birth house of Adolf hitler, one of the most hated and destructive political leaders of all time is to be demolish. Hitler was born in the three-story vanilla house in 1889. After many years of legal debates the austrian government has decided on its demolishment. This tuesday a government bill will be discussed for the destroying of this symbolic building. After this process it is possible that the space will be used for charity or government offices,

I believe that this is an important decision for the world not just because they are getting rid of the building but for the more symbolic reasons. It represents moving on from the terrible times of WWII and moving to a new chapter of better government and more equality.

These days all people care about the election, and while this is important, other deadly tragedies happen around the world every day. The biggest headlines today are only about what Trump is doing wrong and nothing about how only 1 out of 8 humans do not get enough food to eat on  a daily basis. And how 21,000 people die every day.

I know one person like you or me cannot make a change but people need to be more aware and focus on other current events happing around our world and even in our neighborhood and school.

Jozzelyn Alejandro #3 (second six weeks)

Like his father, Donald Trump Jr. echoed his father's rhetoric, saying in one appearance that a "disproportionate amount" of undocumented immigrants were bad for society.
"By the way you can't, you can't even make fat jokes now without, like, there's a whole segment of people that like, that's almost the worst one like, it's easier to, like, do a racial thing, than it is a fat one because everyone knows they're fat and they get really offended that--," he said. said it wasn't possible to say anything as a politician without being criticized."That's the problem with, I mean, you can't say anything anymore without them being criticized," he said. Donald Trump's brand is 'plummeting,' biographer says "They yell at the kids like, yeah 'You didn't do good, you forgot to turn! And then they do these interviews where it's like 'Oh she loves doing pageants it's her whole life," said one host. "'Help me, help me.'" Trump Jr. said there was footage on the The Apprentice cutting room that would appeal to those with a "sick sense of humor." The appearance occurred shortly after his father's announcement speech where he said some Mexican immigrants are rapists and criminals. "He's not talking about people that are just here doing, he's talking about people, again, there's a big element coming across and if you speak to people that are on the Texas border -- and he said it very clearly -- 'listen, I'm sure there's some great people too just trying to do better for themselves. I understand that,'" he said in a 2015 appearance shortly after his father announced his candidacy. "And honestly, I don't think that anyone with a straight face -- then again, if they're playing politics -- can with a straight face say that that's not a reasonable stance I mean it's ridiculous." began to mouth the word, but hesitated, explaining he wasn't sure if he could say the word on the radio."Well that's the interesting thing, you know, people come on the show because, you know, they're often times trying to rebuild some of their image and everything, but if they, you know, if they're acting like a b--, just a bad person, people are like, 'I can't believe they're such a-- ,'" Trump Jr."I wanted to say it then I realized," Trump Jr.
"You wanted to say b****," a host said."Then I was thinking wait a second, I'm on radio, and I was like wait a second we're on satellite so I can probably say it," Trump Jr."At least we know you want to say b****," said the host."I did wanna say it," he said."I mean, so many people, you know, they're just worried about, you can't say something bad about Obama, not because you actually have a strong stance against his platform, but because that makes you a racist," Trump Jr.

I personally think that this just proves to show that the saying the apple does not fall far from the tree is a million percent correct.

Trump Fans Calling To Repeal The 19th Amendment - Mila Fisher

To add to all the insanity that's followed Trump's presidential campaign (the most memorable being the border wall and the "locker room" tape), Trump supporters are calling to repeal the 19th amendment, which would take away women's right to vote. When they say make America great again, I guess they thought that the early 1900s were the peak of American government. The reason for this crazy proposal is this: A twitter user posted a chart that showed how the vote count would sway if only men were to vote versus if only women were to vote. The outcome was that Hillary would win if women had the stage, and Trump would win if men were the only ones to vote. Trump supporters on twitter jumped into action, pushing the tag #repealthe19th to the top trending. A young woman even went as far as posting this:
#repealthe19th I would gladly waive my right to vote to solidify the win! #TrumpPence2016 #NeverHillary
If we did repeal the 19th amendment (which won't happen, for various reasons), we would be taking a huge step back in our battle for gender equality, in which we have accomplished major milestones in the past 50 or so years.

2nd Presidential Debate 2016 - Mila Fisher

Tension seemed to be running high at the second presidential debate this year. Though there were many questions asked of the candidates, few were actually answered, especially by Donald Trump, who was particularly good at talking about the question instead of actually answering it. He also took any opportunity he had to throw insults at Hillary Clinton. The way they argued was more like bickering, and immature bickering at that. There were a few intelligent points brought up by our candidates, but not as many as hoped for whoever our future president may be. Here are some of the more memorable quotes from the debate, from Donald Trump;
"Honest Abe never lied. That’s the big difference between Abraham Lincoln and you.","We’re going to make great trade deals. We’re going to have a strong border. We’re going to bring back law and order.","We have a divided nation because of people like her. And believe me, she has tremendous hate in her heart."
And from Hillary Clinton:
"I want to be the president for all Americans, regardless of your political beliefs, where you come from, what you look like, your religion.","People like Donald who paid zero in taxes, zero for our vets, zero for our military, zero for health and education — that is wrong.","I am reminded what my friend Michelle Obama advised us all: When they go low, you go high."
This election may be remembered for a long time. The candidates provided are hard to choose between, being that both have their own major ups and downs. The people shouldn't be scared or apprehensive of a new president. If they are, then something is wrong with our candidates.

Limiting Use Of Harmful Chemicals

October 17th, 2016
Olivia Martin

Yesterday, 170 country's representatives gathered to officially to limit and possibly end the use of HFCs, which are the chemicals that have contributed so much to the earth's warming temperatures. This chemical is commonly used in A/C units or refrigerators. Limiting usage of HFC is a huge milestone for a greener and more sustainable future. Although, one issue to this solution is that developing countries will have to find some sort of alternative to the chemical, which won't be cheap.

It's really great that these chemicals are becoming more and more limited so they'll reduce impact on global warming. Hopefully someday HFCs might even be banned when we replace it with a sufficient alternative.

Bella Macey current event #8

On September 19 two priests were killed in Veracruz, Mexico, but their bodies were found in Poza Rica, Mexico. It has taken awhile to find the suspects but the believe they identified them on October 13. They were shot to death and then just left on the side of a street. But they do say the shooters were drinking with the two priests before the killing.
This is awful and I cannot believe this actually happens. But it wasn't okay for the priest to be out drinking with the killers either. Hopefully those killers stay in jail for a long time.

Child immigrants 3- jade pierre

The number of children traveling to the US illegally has raised 49% in the last year. In the last 15 years illegal immigration has changed drastically. Instead of many single adults immigrating more unaccompanied children and families have been immigrating more often. Boarder security cant prevent this and "walls" alone cant prevent it either (haha BOOUAHH Donald Trump).
In my opinion its not good that unaccompanied children have been traveling alone especially for their own safety!!! Immigrants are not bad people though the come to america for a better life.
