Kate Boyer-African penguin, Buddy, is illegally released into the wild and is given 2 weeks to live
On Wednesday September 19, 2016, an endangered African penguin was stolen from Bayworld, a marine park in South Africa, by two teenagers that then proceeded to release him into the wild. The penguin was found missing the next morning when the park's "monthly medical check" was being issued. Authorities asked via social media for anyone that knows of the penguins release to come fourth with the information. The two students confessed they were drunk and had immediately regretted their decision. Bayworld staff explained that because Buddy was raised in captivity, he would not be able to survive in the wild. "The first two years of a penguins life is crucial. During this time they become familiar with the area they live [in] and learn how to hunt and fend for themselves." Many searches are underway and the public has also been involved in looking for the penguin.
