5 terror groups By: Emma Wall

http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/23/world/terror-groups-in-the-news/index.html

The article above lists the top five terror groups for this month and gives a brief description on each of them.  The groups include; Al-Shabaab, Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, ISIS and Taliban.  Al-Shabaab, for example, has been threatening to attack malls in the west including Mall of Americas.  The majority of these groups are a global threat, meaning that they have attacked other bases that belong to other countries or they have manipulated citizens from other countries.

I was really surprised by this article.  I thought that ISIS was the main threat right now, only to find out that there are several terrorist groups in the world.  I am sure that there are more terrorist groups out there but these are just the main threatening ones.  It is honestly frightening that there are terror groups that are planning attacks on innocent people.  The scariest part is that you don't know what their next plan is.

Men Wearing Miniskirts Equals Women's Rights by Bella Dekhtyar

http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/22/europe/turkey-men-miniskirts/

After the brutal murder and rape of a Turkish women, named Ozgecan Aslan, sparked protests in Turkey have been raging through the streets and social media. Twitter especially, with the hashtag #OzgecanAslan, has women posting themsleves dressed in black. And most recently, the hashtag #ozgecanicinminietekgiy, meaning "wear a miniskirt for Ozgecan", has become very popular. The tweet accompanies a photo of a man with a miniskirt. The public believe the miniskirts symbolizes that a skirt is no excuse for sexual harassment. A study shows that two out of five women in turkey are exposed to sexual and physical violence.

I believe this article relates to women's rights, and especially the women's suffrage movement. It was seen as unusual for men to be standing up for the women in Turkey, but I believe its a step closer to freedom among women in other countries. With the help of the social media, the murder of Ozgecan Aslan has caused people to think about their political attitudes and challenged their views. I believe that many women in Turkey have been victimized in physical violence, but Ozgecan in a way represents women's rights as a martyr, causing further protests among the people. Although it's an unusual strategy, men wearing miniskirts has created some progress in gender equality.

19 manatees stuck in storm drain by Vern Blossfeld

Summary: A group of nineteen manatees was freed after being stuck in a 36-inch storm drain early Tuesday morning. The chief of Florida's Satellite Beach Fire Department, Don Hughes, confirmed to NBC News that all of the manatees were safely rescued without much harm after the 10-hour rescue mission was over. 60 responders were dispatched after the call came in Monday, 4:00 pm. The last manatee was freed 2:00 am Tuesday. Hughes says that the pod must have swam into the drain searching for warmer waters when they got stuck. They were released into a local lagoon after being freed.
Analysis: It's good that we have organizations like this that are able to go in and saved trapped animals! And the fact that they worked from 4 pm to 2 am trying to free them is amazing. I'm glad that the manatees are safe now and that they were unharmed.

First Lady Sent to Prison: Reagan Leslie

Former First Lady of Virginia, Maureen McDonnell, was sentenced to prison for one year and one day. Bob McDonnell, her husband, and herself have been convicted on public-corruption charges stemming from an elaborate set of bribes and resultant favors for a nutritional-supplement company. Former governor Bob McDonnell was sentenced for two years and is appealing conviction. I feel like this is very interesting and ridiculous at the same time. Hopefully they can get out of prison earlier.

Apple Car: Reagan Leslie

For months, there has been a lot of rumors saying that the Apple Company were planning to create an apple car (iCar). Last week, there was news that Apple sent out a 1,000 person team and contacted high-profile car companies to work on a top secret car project named Titan. It was also said that Apple contacted Europe car companies since they are working on self-driving cars. I feel like the Apple car is going to be absolutely amazing. Although it's going to be very expensive, it is still be a great car. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2477033,00.asp

Racist Man: Reagan Leslie

Last month, a man was arrested for bombing NAACP offices in Colorado Springs. The man's name was Thaddeus Murphy, who is now in custody of the federal court now. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the bombing. Right now, it is not clear if Murphy will be charged by NAACP offices or not. I feel that this is ridiculous and kind of racist. If he had personal issues with NAACP, he could've kept his opinions to himself. http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20150220/AP01/302209947/-1/LIVING

Kid friendly youtube: Reagan Leslie

In a couple of weeks, they are coming out with a kid-friendly youtube app to bring kid-friendly content to mobile users. Articles say that it will only be available to android users only but doesn't state the i.o.s. availability yet. It will have content from dreamworks tv, TV, Jim Henson TV, Mother Goose Club, Talking Tom and more. I feel like that this is a good idea. I know their are a lot of bad things on youtube and with this app, parents wouldn't have to worry about their kids watching the wrong things http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2477068,00.asp

Mariela Lomeli Record Breaking Cold in the US East

Cold air from Siberia landed in the US that has brought dangerously frigid and likely setting records. Temperatures are 20-40F below normal for February. Schools in Chicago have closed and trains in the north-east corridor have been affected. This weather surge is also affecting Canada and these temperatures are expected to last until Friday. Weather forecasters believe the cold air will help break more than 10 daily record lows, NBC reports. Elijah Marsh, a 3 year old from Toronto, died after being lost for hours only wearing a T-shirt, diaper, and boots. Elijah was found a few hundred meters away from his home in -19C temperature but died in the hospital.

These strange occurrences are occurring because of global warming. Now, it is not even safe to leave your home because you might die. And it is not like we can stop the weather from killing people but then again someone should have been taking care of that boy or else it could have been prevented.

Mariela Lomeli The secrets of Oscar limo drivers

A lot of limos fill the streets of Los Angeles for the Academy Awards. The minimal rental is eight hours at $140-$425 per hour and plus tip. The vehicle depends to: a stretch limo, an SUV, a Rolls Royce or something else. It is not just picking up celebs and taking them to the ceremony. Some have to be picked up from the airport, taken to their hotel, then to the event. Celebrities sometimes  will have misshapes, so by carrying mouthwash, hairspray, and a small sewing kit can boost their tips. The limo drivers must lay out the napkins, the glasses, and the snacks that include: chips, peanuts, and water at room temperature because cold water can " affect their voice". Chocolate is not provided because its too messy. Each limos has an Apple TV, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth just to suit the needs of the client.

Sometimes people don't take in consideration what the limo drivers do to please the client. Who knew they did so much when it seemed that all they did was drive. This limo business seems very interesting and pays well when you get to see celebrities face to face.

Mariela Lomeli Star Invaded the Solar System

An alien star passed through our solar system just 70,000 years ago astronomers have discovered. What if it had invaded today ? What would happen? No other star has ever approached us(earth) this close. Yeah, but that was 70,000 years ago. SSHH! Let me explain! The red dwarf cruised on the outer reaches of the solar system. 98% of certain super individuals are certain that it travelled in the region known as "outer Oort Cloud" a region at the edge of the Solar System filled with trillions of comets. Its rare because this only happens once every nine million years.
The question is --- should we be worried or not? I mean if this is only supposed to happen every nine MILLION years but its happened in the last 70,000 years then could it be something rare or a sign of disaster? I mean, come on guys-- not trying to be cheesy and all but the star was red. Red=Blood. It just is what it is. You either believe in the conspiracy or die from a red dwarf star.

Mariela Lomeli Penguin Loose the ability to tastes fish.. wait waht !!

Yes its true...dun dun dun, Scientist have discovered that penguin can only taste sour and salty food. The flightless birds lost three of the five basic tastes long ago in evolution a genetic study suggests. You know, its okay though because the penguins swallow their fish hole and really get the chance to "taste" their food, so they wont die. By looking through the penguins' DNA, scientists brought about the realization  that penguins can only taste sour and salty but lost everything else.
Imagine if humans lived like this? Would we even know what taste is because we never tasted flavor or just swallow are food whole? See these are questions that overpower our minds but the government puts stabilizers in our heads so we wont think such things ... oh no I just forgot what I said... where my who? * stabilizer stabilizing*

Mariela Lomeli US Pays Philippines over reef damage

The US paid 87m pesos to the Philippines for damaging their coral reefs in January 2013.The Philippine foreign industry will all the money that was compensated to protect and restore the reef. The ship that caused all the damage was the USS Guardian due to poor planning. The US apologized and removed four commanding officers for not doing what they were supposed to be doing.
The damage is done but at least the US did pay their dues to prevent wars from starting or enemies because when something pops up and the US is in big trouble, the Philippines wiil turn their backs on them and say " Nope. You didn't help me for s***!"

mariela lomeli Painting Sale Sets $300m Record

A painting of two Tahitian girls by Paul Gauguin has been sold for $300 MILLION dollars. It is the MOST expensive work of art ever sold in the entire existence of humanity. The title Nafea Faa Ipoipo or When Will You Marry Me? was painted in 1892. This painting had been owned by a Swiss collector but unconfirmed reports say that it was sold to a museum in Qatar. The small oil painting beat a work sold by Paul Cezanne which sold for a reported 158m(euros).
This shows that people are willing to pay any amount of money to keep the art acknowledgement alive. Well, to do so, one must be very wealthy  and have admiration for the arts like the paralyzed guy from the movie Untouchables.

Australians on death row given more time by Jesse Dale

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/bali-9-indonesia-delays-execution-australian-french-drug-convicts/

Due to technical errors, 2 of 9 Australians who were caught trying smuggle 18 pounds of heroin into Bali, Indonesia have been given more time from death row and to spend it with their families. The 2 men were considered the ringleaders of the group, hence given a larger conviction than the other 7, who each were given 20 years to life.

I honestly do not think executing 2 people in the drug world is gonna help the war on drugs in any way, shape, or form. The world has been fighting the war on drugs for way to many years, to no avail. The more security against drugs there is, the more underground drug activity there will be, which is the opposite of what we want. We need to find a better way to deal with drugs than the way we are, because the way we are is not helping at all.

Pope let's gays and lesbians sit front row by Jesse Dale

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/pope-francis-us-gay-lesbian-catholics-vatican/

Pope Francis and the Vatican gave VIP seats to US gays and lesbians at the weekly general audience. The Vatican has never done that before. They were, however, skipped when they were giving shout outs to certain groups.

This Pope Francis is the best thing to happen to the Vatican and Catholic church in a while I believe. The Vatican has become much more tolerant of people and even accepting them more. Even though they were skipped over during recognitions, we are getting closer and closer to equality for everyone.

US helps out the Philippines by Jesse Dale

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-pays-philippines-damaged-reef-navy-minesweeper-uss-guardian/

Recently, a United States navy mine sweeper ship ran over and destroyed parts of a protected coral reef in the Philippines. The US payed the country $1.97 million for damages and also offered to help build a better station at the coral reef.

The United States simply went by the rule "you break it you buy it." They destroyed someone else's stuff and they paid for it. They simply what was the right thing to do. They also went above and beyond what they needed to do which just gives the US a better reputation, which is good.

Argentina does not want the US there by Jesse Dale

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/argentine-president-cristina-fernandez-says-u-s-israel-meddling-in-country/

Argentinian president Cristina Fernandez says that they do want the US and Israel to be meddling in their business. She says they want Argentina to stay less developed than the other countries. Representatives of the US and Israel did not comment

sometimes the United States just try a little too hard. We've always been known to help other countries, but sometimes they do not want to be helped. And of all countries, the US should be one to recognize that fact and move on. I think we are manipulating the helpful reputation we have into making other countries do what we want, and that's not good at all.

Gold Coins Discovered in Israel by Jesse Dale

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/gold-coins-discovered-in-israel-by-accident-dates-back-about-a-thousand-years/

A couple of amateur divers accidentally found some 2,000 gold coins in the ocean. Officials say they date back about a thousand years and they are from the Fatamid Era. They were called a rare and interesting piece of history that is not usually seen, and it can help advance the history of around Israel.

I think it's really fascinating that something man made like that can last for so long, especially in the water. Things like this make me want to learn more history and how things came to be. there are probably thousands of more discoveries like that down there and other places they haven't looked, and they will just keep getting more and more exciting the more they find.

'Death' of Iran's Dead Sea by Jesse Dale

http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/10/world/cnnphotos-iran-lake-urmia/index.html

There once used to be a Lake Urmia in northern Iran which was exactly like the Dead Sea. but it has dried up and no one can swim there anymore. the Dead Sea is quickly following suit and people are trying to stop it. They say it is because of Iran's water crisis, and the president is pledging $5 billion to try to solve the problem

Although the war in the Middle East is technically over, this is what we should have been worrying about as well as, if not more, than the threat of terrorists. While people have to wait around for terrorists to do something, the water shortages are happening around the clock and we need to help fix it. A lot of us are over there anyway, so it shouldn't be that big of a problem to try to come up with solutions for them.

Oil Platform Explosion Kills 3 in Brazil: Samantha Arthur

http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/11/americas/brazil-oil-platform-explosion/index.html
3 workers in an oil platform were killed and 10 other workers were injured from an explosion. The tragic event occurred in Brazil, and reporters are getting their information from the state oil company. 74 of the workers who were working on the same platform are currently missing.

It's really tragic when lives are cut short from dangerous jobs are silly mistakes that cause exploding oil platforms. People should really look into the safety of that kind of environment before they put workers and civilians inside of it. This isn't a problem with just Brazil either, incidents like these are happening all over the world.

Are we ready for a global epidemic?: Samantha Arthur

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/13/health/are-we-ready-for-global-outbreak/index.html
Ebola was on everyone's mind, but are we ready to take on other infectious diseases? Diseases can travel through food, other humans, and insects, yet we as humans can barely stop a disease from crossing certain country's borders.

Ebola caused thousands of riots and scared a lot of people. I personally don't think we are ready to take on a whole new epidemic. Maybe more into the future when we have further technology, but right now, in 2015, we aren't advanced enough to take on certain kinds of disease.

American tourists caught taking risky pictures in sacred temple: Samantha Arthur

American tourists and other girls were asked to leave Angkor after taking nude photos of themselves at Preach Khan temple (which is a sacred place). The people of Angkor are taking deep offense.

I think that it is extremely disrespectful for those girls to be taking such photos in such a sacred place. I maybe don't think kicking them out of the country is called for, but maybe a ticket would be affective.

16 deaths during parade in Haiti: Samantha Arthur

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/17/world/haiti-carnival-deaths/index.html
16 people were killed during Haiti's national Carnival parade. No murders, but there was an accident with an electrical shock on one of the floats (atleast that's what government officials are saying).

It's really tragic that so many deaths occurred when it was supposed to be a light hearted event (atleast that's what people  like to think). They should have made sure all of the equipment/ floats were ready to be in the parade.

Sapporo Snow Festival ft. Darth Vader: Samantha Arthur

One of the most legendary villains known in cinema history is the legendary darth vader. He is now making his debut at the 66th annual Sapporo Snow Festival. He is one of the main attractions among 200 other sculptures.

I think the fact that American cinematic icons, such as Darth Vader, really goes to show how cultures in one country can affect other cultures. Cultural diffusion is even present in modern times, which is really cool to think about.

    Case Cockrell- last current event

    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/02/18/oklahoma-ap-history-class-under-fire-for-omitting-american-exceptionalism/

An Oklahoma school is canceling the teaching of AP United States History for omitting American Exceptionalism. They are trying to remove this subject from their curriculum because of this incident. many students are furious, they think their rights are being taken away. Students are wanting to protest this.

I think this whole situation is asinine. Kids jave the right learn what they want to learn in school and they cannot just take that away from them. I wouldn't want this to happen to me, so they should not have to suffer through this.

ISIS slaughters Egyptian Christians: Samantha Arthur

21 Egyptians were killed by ISIS. A graphic video of the murders was released on Sunday. It showed the beheadings of approx. a dozen men. Along these men was Mina Aziz; he was only 24 years old.
If you ask me, ISIS has gone too far. First they were only threatening America, but now it's world wide. Someone needs to get a hold on them before it's too late. This isn't just a US problem, it's world wide.

    Rat Tribe Couple: Reagan Leslie

Zhang Qiuli, who is a pedicurist, Zhao Dao who doesn't have a bedroom bigger than a single bed, and Zhang Hao, who left their one year old son miles away to learn how "make it" in the Chinese capital, all live together in what the Chinese call "the rat tribe." They're called the rat tribe because they are the people who live in the underground and are in basements and air raid shelters in Beijing, China. In most cases, migrant workers cannot afford to paying housing, which means without the official resident permit(huoku), they don't have access to low-cost housing, so they end up living underground. The people that live down there are pretty young and have aspirations to move up the social mobility ladder. The people also try to make it as best as they can and think positively. At first, I thought it was a little weird that people were living underground, but now that reading the article, the people seem really cool. http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/17/asia/china-beijing-rat-tribe/index.html

Carnival Parade Gone Wrong: Reagan Leslie

It was about 3:00 in the morning in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The people in the parade were celebrating the first day of Mardi Gras. All of a sudden, while the singers are performing on a float, one of the singers hit an electrical line and it sparked. About 16 people on the float got electrocuted by the line. The ambulances came quickly and got the injured people off the float. In a video that was shown, you can see the chaos the people were experiencing. Sadly, they had to cancel the three days of celebration, but instead mourn of the ones lost. http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/17/world/haiti-carnival-deaths/index.html

    Gay Marriage -brett akop

In Mobile County, Alabama, a federal judge instructed a judge to issue licenses for gay people to marry. This judge was then hinting to other judges in Alabama to do the same, but it failed, dramatically. The majority of the probate judges refused to allow this kind of thing to happen in Alabama. However, Alabama citizens has begun protesting and filing lawsuits against the Alabama government to make it legal to issue marriage licenses for same sex couples. We have come a long way from discrimination. First African Americans, then women suffrage, and now same sex marriages. It seems like America is just going around in circles, just with different people. We are supposed to be the land of the free, and we all have equal rights, and yet some people who are "different" can't receive the same rights as others. Women and African Americans are still not receiving full equality, by the way they are being treated. So if we can't fix problems that have been here for centuries, how can we move on to another issue? http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/12/politics/alabama-gay-marriage-licenses/index.html

Selfie with the Dead -brett akop

A teenager was found dead with beside his mother. The lead suspect, 16 years old, had sent a selfie via Snapchat on the same day to his friends with the victims in the background. This photo, through multiple screenshots from the people he had sent it to, led the police to an investigation. When they searched the suspect's house, they found a gun used to murder the son and mother. The suspect then confessed and was then taken into custody. This is very sick. Citizens of America were given the privilege of free speech, like social media. However, when it is used like this it is, people abuse this amendment. I'm very interested in why the suspect had murdered these two people, but it sickens me that he would ever do such a thing. http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/09/us/suspect-takes-selfie-with-homicide-victim/index.html

    Family Dead -brett akop

A teenager was shot to death by cops in Baltimore, Maryland. He didn't stop at a stop sign, and refused to pull over after a state trooper caught him. It then resulted in a gun fight. The police traced him all the way back to Kentucky, to his address. They were wondering why he was all the way in Baltimore and then alerted the authorities in Kentucky to do a search. When they came to his house, they found that both his parents and his sister had been shot. He had tried to muffle the gun shots with pillows, since they were placed on their faces. They were all shot twice in the head, as if he really wanted to make sure that they were dead. Apparently, the family had gotten into a huge uproar over computer usage, and the teenager had reacted in that way. I think that this is a bit exaggerated on account of the teenager. He must have had something very wrong with him to have shot his entire family over the use of his computer. This is the type of world we live in today, where teenagers get mad over such little things and reach so dangerously. Things like this always leads back to the second amendment, concerning gun usage. Many believe it's not in the gun and that it depends on the person holding it. But I believe, that if this teenager didn't have the gun in the first place, he wouldn't have reacted in this way. http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/16/us/maryland-kentucky-shooting/index.html

    Killing kids Makenzye Prince

The police have said that Hicks shot and killed the three youngsters in their apartment in Chapel Hill following a parking dispute, but they have not ruled out religious hatred as a motivation for the killings.
A dozen firearms were reportedly recovered from Hicks’ home.

This is ridiculous. I don't understand why that man would kill the three kids. I agree with what Barack Obama said about this situation being brutal and outrageous. I'm glad they caught the man and found all of his guns.

Emoticon in space by Londyn Alexander

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/10/tech/space-smiley-face/index.html

The galaxy cluster known as  SDSS J1038+4849 looks like a smiling emoji.  The joyous expression was caught by a women, Judy Schmidt, who entered this photo into the Hubble's Hidden treasures competition. Explained to us by Hubble's scientist, the eyes are actually two distant galaxies, leaving the smile to be " Strong gravitational lensing." While the ring is called " Eistein's ring," put all these things together and you've got yourself an emoticon.

I think this event was really adorable. It is a great contrast from the very heavy, weighted, and depressing events happening frequently.  I think it cool thats a civilian discovered this versus a scientist at Hubble, it adds a layer of retainability to the article. I personally don't feel that this is some world changing story, but its fun and a breath of fresh air.

The  crime took place in Sarre Union, France, despite the young accussed residing in Alsace region of France.  One of the teens claimed the crime was not " anti-Semitic" and that they didn't know the vandalized graves were jewish.  They have been charged with "desecration of graves and with organized damage on property for the public benefit," and could each face up to at the most seven years in prison. A public apology has been released by the interior minister. This vandalism comes timely to other Jewish cemeteries around the world.

I feel like this was a very dumb and reckless act. It was very insensitive and disrespectful, for the teenagers to vandalize graves, but to write nazi saying on jewish graves in just disgusting. I do believe punishment for this crime is needed but up to seven years in jail is a little severe. Do they have strict laws against this in France to where this is a serious offense?

North Korea has updated it's space/satellite stations. This new advanced technology, allowing for the building of larger rockets. Raising questions  if the country is planning and capable to preform another rocket launch. The satellite pictures show that a yearlong construction project has taken place. These sudden discoveries have placed the US on high alert, for future events to come.Given The US and North Korea's history, the tensions right now are extremely high.

I think these pictures are slightly unsettling, based on our countries history with North Korea. I do feel the US is doing the right thing by taking precautions. Our country is not in the shape to handle nuclear war, and I hope the government makes a wise decision. The situation is extremely delicate, but if negotiated properly I feel there can be an advantage in this.

Jamaica' s Infamous seven mile beach might need a new name.  The seven mile beach could possibly disappear within the small time span of only 30 years. Due to erosion, and the climate Change making the natural process mor extreme and aggressive. This is a major issue putting a dent in the countries main source of income. Tourism being such an influential part of the economy, causes many villagers panic.

I don't feel like this is a major issue. But is definitely an influential event, on a particularly small scale. It is tragic however how such a beautiful landmark, could possible disappear. This disappearance could hurt Jamaica economically, as long as disrupt their social systems.

Recent disputes over the type of government wanted now acting like menace.  A majority of the population want representative Democracy, while others would rather keep their  Secret religion,an issue which has been addressed numerous times throughout history.China is being blamed for encouraging this political change. Despite facts that would discourage them being responsible.

I think it's a healthy thing and part of evolution within a countries government. I approve of the actions Hong Kong is taking. This political transformation could possibly improve and benefit them economically, through exports such as tourism and many others .However I do feel this will not end well.

Chase with a plot twist. - Makenzye Prince

In Maryland there was a police chase going on. When they finally got the guy and looked him up it is said that his family was just found dead in their house with gunshot wounds. The bodies of Sarah Hendrix, her husband, Kevin, and their daughter, Grace, were found in the home, each with multiple gunshot wounds, said Detective Bill Rose of the Corbin Police Department. The bodies were taken to the medical examiner's office in Frankfort, Ky., for autopsies.

This story is shocking to me. I really hope the child is okay and comes clean on if he did it or not. His one sister who is alive must be heart broken. I don't know how she feels and might never will. However, I just pray that the family and the son are okay.

Bombs on police cars- Makenzye prince

A bomb attached to a vehicle wounded one person in Kabul early on Tuesday, police said, breaking a recent lull in attacks in the Afghan capital. A suspected magnetic bomb attached to a 4-wheel-drive vehicle exploded in the east of the city. One person was wounded in the blast, Rahimi said, but he did not give any details about the person's identity.

I hope that the one officer who was wounded is okay. I also hope that the guy who put the bomb there is brought to justice.

Sandra Ávila Beltrán also known as "The Queen of the Pacific" was just released on appeal after serving a total of over 7 years of prison. She was arrested for money laundering in Mexico, however she was never convicted of many crimes accept conspiracy to smuggle cocaine in Florida, to which she plead guilty. She also told police that she provided support to Juan Espinosa (AKA The Tiger-El Tigre) She was then deported back to Mexico and served 5 more years for money laundering  charges. She was released on appeal because she was tried twice for the same charge in the U.S. as well as Mexico.

She should be constantly on surveillance since she has familial ties to the Guadalajara Cartel. She is most likely going to commit again the only question is when. In her statement she says she knows that drugs come in and out of airports without the authorities even knowing about it. She denies the charges, but in order to confidently make a statement like that she must have done some smuggling.

The death toll from a TransAsia Airways plane crash in Taiwan rose to 40 on Saturday, authorities said, as details emerged that both engines lost power.Flight 235 crashed into a river in Taiwan's capital, Taipei, shortly after takeoff Wednesday with 58 people on board.Three others remain unaccounted for, while 15 people survived, authorities said.As crews search for the missing, more revelations emerged on what led to the tragedy.Pilots grappled with engine problems before the plane clipped a bridge and plunged into a river, Taiwan's aviation safety agency said.During the crisis in the cockpit, the pilots received a series of alerts, starting with an alarm related to one of the engines and followed by five stall warnings as the plane lost thrust.

I'm not sure if they knew about the engine failure from the beginning but if they did why would they even try to take off thinking it was nothing risking so many lives for this and why would the crew turn off the second engine if it's the only thing they got keeping them in the air?.

An Islamic cult by William Perry Esping

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/16/opinion/bergen-isis-enemies/index.html

The terrorist group ISIS has taken severe losses from massive bombings and attacks led by the United States, Egypt, and Jordan after killing citizens of the nations. They also have made enemies with Al Qaida and other islamic extremists. They also post their crimes on social media. Many people thought they were just lunatics and doing this for no apparent reason. However it was stated in this article that they are an apocalyptic cult based on a tale from Muhammed about a final battle that would bring the end of days and a true form of islam would emerge. Now this might not be how they think it is going to end, but certainly how they justify their actions. The fact that everyone is going to die in an apocalypse so why not make it happen sooner.

In my opinion ISIS has your typical extremist martyrs that don't care if they die. The thing that makes this group different is that they don't do this for their god they are doing this because they are not happy with their life and want it to end. They feel by pushing the inevitable apocalypse that it would end the stresses of everyday life for everyone. People like ISIS give a bad name to the common Muslim, who prays and accepts other religions.

Facebook in Prison by Victoria Biro*

    http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/bs-md-corbin-deaths-20150215-story.html#page=1

Security is pulling back the reigns on punishment in prisons.  The new punishment for use of social media while in prison is now equal to that of committing a violent crime on an inmate.  Solitary confinement:  alone in a cell, no telephone, no visitation rights, etc.  This can go on as long as they have bad behavior, or a set amount of time.  One prisoner received 37 years of alone in a cell, and 74 years of no phone or visitation rights.

I feel sad for the man because he lost those rights for life (basically).  On one side, he was just on facebook to communicate with his family which i would want to do as well, but on the other side, he knows the rules, and needs to learn to pay his dues.  He committed a crime in the first place so he must live through the consequences and learn how to be good during that time.

Egypt attacks ISIS by: Emma Wall

The article above is about the attack of Egypt on ISIS.  It states that Egypt has staged two waves of airstrikes on ISIS in Libya after they murdered 21 Christian Egyptians.  The article also discusses the details about the slaughtering.  It states that the Christians were crying out things like, "Oh God" and "Oh Jesus."  It also says that ISIS made a five minute video of the killing while praising Osama bin Laden.

I am glad that Egypt is taking a stand.  They should, because they just lost 21 of their citizens.  They definitely made a statement.  The slaughtering is absolutely horrific.  It disgusts me that this is going on and that it is out of control.  My heart is definitely going out to Egypt right now.

Teen shot in chase by Victoria Biro*

A teen was shot by police after a car chase for more than 30 miles.  The teen was traced back to living in Kentucky and was driving through Maryland alone in his car.  That week, his mother, father and sister were found dead (shot in the head).  They suspect that he was responsible for the deaths, but unfortunately the may never know.  After driving through a traffic light, the police tried to pull him over.  The teen sped away which began a chase.  The teen shot through his window and injured a policeman wearing his vest, so the cops shot the teen to death in his car.

I think it is very sad that the teen had to die for this.  I don't think it was right for them to shoot him to death, even if he was dangerous.  Death should not be his penalty because we don't know what was going on in his life.  His family could have been abusive or he could have a mental illness and got out of control.  The teen just needed help and support, but now he will never get it because they ended his life after one mistake.

Police Detain 5 Teens Suspected of Destroying 300 Jewish Graves by Bella Dekhtyar

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/11416611/Police-detain-five-teenagers-suspected-of-destroying-300-Jewish-graves-in-France.html

On Thursday, the police detained five teenagers who are suspected of vandalizing 300 Jewish graves in France. The boys aged between 15 and 17 and were from eastern France. Authorities believe the main reason the crime was committed was an anti-Semitism motive. The youngest of the group came forward and assured that there was no motive of that kind, but failed to give an actual reason for such actions. Authorities have found that the group had no past criminal records and have no ideological convictions on their behavior.

I believe that the statements from these group of boys were fabricated because such an immense destruction to so many graves, especially those who honored the fallen from the Holocaust, could not have possibly been a harmful prank. I believe this ties in with world history because it alludes to anti-semitism during the Holocaust. Although anti-semitism is not as common as it was during the time of the Holocaust, it still tragically exists today.

Chris Hadfield decided to document his experience in space and after 3 trips, he has released it. The astronaut decided it would be a new idea to show the world what it is like to see the earth from a different view. He orbited Earth 2,593 times, so he is the right guy to do it.
I think it is a great way for the people of the world to understand just how small we are. When seeing the whole planet from above, it is a reminder that the Earth is a delicate place, and it lets everybody experience what astronauts experience without traveling to space themselves. It also shows the improvements in technology that we can now take pictures in outer space to share with the world.

Food can inspire! by Victoria Biro*

A mango is more than a fruit!  In China, It has become a political symbol from Mao Zedong's actions toward workers. She was given baskets of mangoes and began sending them to peasants, who had never even see the fruit before. It became a representation of a new equality China had not seen before. The mango started to be seen across the region as art and in literature.
I find this inspirational, that a single person changed the way people thought of workers for years. Equality is now an important aspect of life for all people, and this one person made a difference!

Road Rage suspect sought in killing of mother
    by Adrianna Martinez

Police have released a surveillance video of a gray or silver sedan in the hunt for a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a local mom from Las Vegas, Nevada after an alleged road rage incident. A 44 year old mother was on her way home after giving driving lessons to her teenage daughter when she almost has a near  collision with another vehicle. A argument started between the mother and the male driver of the other car. The mother and her daughter drove home and a few hours later the suspects car pulled up to her house .Multiple shots were fired and the mother was shot in the head and rushed to the hospital, she was taken off life support and died on Valentines day .Police are looking for the male suspect and two other men who were with him when the crime took place.

This is a very sad and scary incident. I feel sorry for the family who lost their mother, wife and grandmother. It is also sad that someone would commit this horrible crime over a petty argument. Hopefully the police will be able to find the three men so justice can be served.

Teen killed in Maryland shootout; 3 bodies found at a Kentucky address linked to the teen
    by Adrianna Martinez

A 16 year old teen named Jason Hendrix failed to stop when a state trooper tried to pull him over. A car chase started and Hendrix struck another vehicle, forcing him to stop with police surrounding him. Officers approached the vehicle and the teen pulled out a gun and was shooting at the officers and shot one of them. The officers shot back and killed the teenager. Detectives traced the teen's car registration to an address in Corbin 500 miles away from the shootout. At the house police discovered the bodies of  Jason Hendrix's parents and sister. They believe Jason Hendrix is responsible for the deaths of his family.  Many questions are still unanswered, such as is he responsible for the deaths and if he is, then why and when did he commit this crime?

This is a very serious situation, and since the suspect was killed, police may not be able to truly know what his motive was. It  is surprising to me that he would be able to kill his own family and not care what horrible crime he committed.

Obsession with beauty nearly kills model
    by Adrianna Martinez

Andressa Urach from  Sao Paulo brazil admits her obsession with beauty and plastic surgery almost killed her. Urach is a model and a reality TV star who has had more than 10 surgeries done to get the body and face that she believes is perfect. She changed her nose, cheekbones, jaw, had her breasts changed  twice and had numerous lip injections to become beautiful. Eventually the medical procedure took their toll, she was rushed to the hospital for septic shock and spent weeks in the intensive care and then in  a wheelchair and eventually recovered.

I believe this incident is serious and ridiculous. I believe society has set a bar for what  beauty is and needs to look like. This idea of beauty has resulted in women thinking they are ugly and need to get plastic surgeries in order for society to think they are beautiful.

I think it's weird like I don't use Facebook but if it notifies my friends and family if I get hurt like that's just weird why would I want everyone on my Facebook to know that I got injured badly.

This is supposed to keep you from being hacked.

I don't really like it because I already don't get hacked and why would I need to enter in the Apple ID for everything I do like what's the point of that.

200 whales stranded by Vern Blossfeld

Summary: Hordes of rescuers from the Department of Conservation rushed to push huge animals back into the water. Friday, February 13th, nearly 200 pilot whales were stranded on New Zealand's South Island. At least two dozen of the whales didn't make it, and 80 people came to the beach near the Farewell Spit to begin moving the surviving whales into the water. The shallow waters in the South Island's northwest corner are especially dangerous for these whales, where it is difficult to navigate. Scientists believe that a pod typically gets stranded when a pilot whale gets stuck, because they stay in groups and make sure no one is left behind.
Analysis: This is a world issue because it's sad when a group of whales gets stuck on shore and can't make it back to the ocean. It's good that there are groups like the Department of Conservation out there to help animals. Hopefully more groups like them will form around the world to help out.

Worst Drought in 1,000 years by Vern Blossfeld

Summary: Scientists warn that parts of the U.S. are in danger of a dangerous drought, shown in recent studies of the Earth's water levels. The drought is due to global warming on water supplies in the region. The chances of the 35-year drought hitting the Southwest and central Great Plains by 2100 are above 80%. But this is only if the world stays on its current trajectory of greenhouse gas emissions, say scientists from NASA, Columbia and Cornell University. If countries were to reduce their green house emissions, the chances of the drought drop to 60 or 70 percent for the Great Plains, but will remain at 80% for the Southwest.
Analysis: This is a world issue because global warming is effecting all parts of the world. If we want to stop this drastic changing of the earth's climate, we need to put a stop to all the pollution we are contributing to the atmosphere and to the Earth. It looks as though there aren't a lot of clear solutions to the drought at this time; although water managers have been looking at the possibility of a drought, "Water demand has passed supply in some areas. Throwing thirty years of drought on top of that means that we're going to have to change the way we live out here" doesn't sound much like they have a big plan.

Billionaire Nutella Founder Michele Ferrero Dies by Savannah Boyack

    http://money.cnn.com/2015/02/15/news/nutella-ferrero/

Michele Ferrero, the founder and patriarch of the Italian Nutella and Ferrero Rocher empire, died on Saturday, Valentine's Day. He was the richest candyman on the planet which put his wealth at $23.4 billion. Ferrero's father was the one who added hazelnut to chocolate, to make more product, during WWII because of the rationed chocolate. Ferrero products came to the US in 1969 and has since been quite popular. The company is family owned and is now run by Ferrero's son, Giovanni.

I love Nutella!! It's kind of sad, and ironic, that Ferrero had to die on Valentine's Day, a day filled with chocolate. My condolences to the Ferrero family. I'm sure Nutella will keep on selling like crazy and maybe Giovanni will bring some new ideas to the products and business.

Recently in heightened strenious events, the "mortar has been dropped  into a launch tube" provide no reaction alarming or one to bring tranquility.  Despite actions to provoke some feedback, the motor remains unresponsive. The motor is located at a " Junction" that leads from the city of Mosul, Tal Afar, and beyond the Syrian border, where it is currently surrounded by 100 Kurdish fighters as of late last week.  It has been working as a very important supply line for the terrorist group ISIS. Now with the recent support from coalition air strikes it poses an opportunity for the Kurds to seize the area. The Kurds are in a heated tedious battle with ISIS as of now, on that could provoke more warfare if not handled properly.

I believe this is a very delicate situation. The Kurds can't capture specific cities without raising rebellions, but at the same time if they do not ISIS can cause more harm. Based on the groups history I believe the risk should be faced, and if things end favorably ISIS can be charged for its many human  rights violations. The Kurds now have the government of Afghanistan on their side making it an even higher probability to finally take town these villains once and for all.

Hostage confirmed dead by emily henderson 2

Tuesday, Kayla mueller (a 26 year old american), was confirmed dead. She was captured by the islamic extremist group, ISIL. Kayla was a health care worker and was executed like so many other innocent people.
This article, written by Peter Foster from the Telegraph was published on February 10, 2015 in Washington. Prior to reading this, i had known ISIL/ISIS to have taken several other lone hostages as well as killing mass groups of innocent people. Rather than declaring immediate war, ISIS stays in hiding while they attempt to provoke countries such as the US. This article was written for people interessted in the ongoing conflict of how to deal with ISIS. This article was written to advise people on the state of Kayla, and point fingers at Obama for not responding with any further action. This article is important because it points out a major issue for the US, what action should we take to deal with ISIS and when? both sides of the argument for when have valid points.

This article was produced Feb 9, 2015 in an unknown location. Prior to this article, i have known other countries to have healthier meals than america in general, and have read several articles about americas lack of healthy food. This article was written for people whom have some interest in food, seeing this would most likely irritate many americans. This article was written to establish a point through photographic proof that americans are behind the rest of the world in terms of health. This article is important because it takes a stand for improving school lunches in america with untenable points.

Baghdad Has No Curfew by Bella Dekhtyar

    http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/baghdad-celebrates-decade-old-curfew-lifted-n302406

Baghdad's curfew has been around for a decade, and was recently lifted on Sunday. People celebrated in the streets now that they are no longer confined to the hours of 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. The rule was made because of the violence from the U.S. led invasions many years ago. Despite the current attacks from the Islamic State Group, Baghdad lifted the restriction in belief that people will have more freedom, "to show art and creativity to the people." However, because of this freedom, more police and security forces will be added to night watch, along with more security checks. The reason being, is because of the fear that this sudden freedom may cause a higher crime rate among the people.

The reason I chose this article is because I believe it pertains to a country's freedom and past struggles. I found it devastating when I first found out about such a restriction among people that we all never thought of as a natural right. Secondly, the wars and violence are what first caused such high stakes for security in this country, and the fact it still occurs today shows the little improvement. Although I found this new right uplifting for the citizens, I also found it dangerous because of the possible increase in crime. Hopefully, because of the added police watch, it won't be such an issue. I'm not sure whether this is a win or lose situation because although the people are granted freedom for their curfew, the added security precautions may even cause unrest among the citizens if its not well executed. Relating to history, I think this shows how even small laws, like curfew, can restrict so many activities and freedom among the people.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/02/09/as-ebola-fades-questions-arise-over-billions-in-us-aid/

As Ebola is starting become non-existent in the US, many questions have been arising about the tax money that went toward the tax money to treat the disease. Over 385 millions dollars was spent towards this since October. Over 20,000 people were killed in west Africa alone from the disease. This money has yet to be accounted for, this is why it is a concern.

I think this amount money should be accounted for because this could be very damaging for the economy. While this disease might be deadly, we still need to watch what we spend, tax payers money and the governments money is important and is important to the life of our country.

    Plane crash- Makenzye Prince

The passenger plane clipped a bridge and plunged into a river in Taipei, according to the island's official news agency, CNA.
Rescuers scrambled to pull survivors from the submerged wreck of the ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop aircraft, which went down shortly after takeoff from the Taiwanese capital.
Fifty-eight people were aboard the flight when it veered out of control as it flew to Kinmen, (off the coast of the Chinese province of Fujian).
32 people confirmed dead and 11 missing. The search and rescue effort continues. Many of the 15 people who survived the crash were injured. Two other people, who were in a car on the bridge that was clipped by the wing of the plane as it went down, also were hurt. The plane's cockpit crew were among those confirmed dead, authorities said.

This was very sad to me. I personally have a fear of planes for this reason. My prayers go out to the families & friends who have lost their loved ones. I pray they find the 11 people who are missing.

Hezbollah and Israel goes head to head by Skiler Houston

After Israel's air strike on Syrian section of Golan Heights, Hezbollah gets upset over there 6 fighters who died because of the attack. Hezbollah decided to  fight back by launching military tank missiles along the Lebanon border killing two Israel solders.  Israel attacks once more thru air strike and ground strike. Both parties exchange messages saying that they do not want another war and will make due with that they have caused.

I believe that even though they attacked each other they made up which is very good. The decided on not having another war. The world needs to learn from these two. There would be a decrease of ciaos. The world would be a peaceful place, but some people don't like peace so that thought is out.

U.S. declines to hear same-sex marriage from Lousiana By Skiler Houston

Louisiana contacted the U.S. Supreme Court in order to ban same-sex marriage. The Supreme Court decides on not addressing the issue because they do not want to bring up the issue of same-sex marriage. After Louisiana 4 more cases appear to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Court decided on addressing the 4 cases in April. The ruling will be issued in June.

I believe that same-sex marriage should be open to anyone who wants to do it. It is there life. They can do whatever they want with it. Its not right that it is a big issue in the U.S. The United States is suppose to be a place of free will. That is there right to do as they please as long as they don't break the law. They should just let all states open to this "issue."

Twelve people killed in Terriost attack by Skiler Houston

Two people raided a magazine office killing 12 people. In those 12 people the top editor of the company,  a couple of cartoonist, and two police officers were listed as some of the people who died during the event. Statistics show that this terrorist attack has been the worst one since World War 2. The cause of the attack is message the magazine has been sending to its readers. Some examples are the comics would make fun of Prophet Muhammad and other great leaders. Police are on the hunt for the 2 terrorist, but the person driving the get away car has turned himself into the authorities.

I believe that the terrorist could have handled the situation better. They could have wrote a letter to the magazine company and asked if they could stop the comics.  If that didn't work they could have set up a protest against the magazine company. The terrorist was so mad they had to kill 12 people. Its a shame to see people like that.

Murderers at McDonalds Executed : Sophia Davison

A province in China, Zhaoyuan City, held the trial for Zhang Lidong and daughter Zhang Fan this past October, and led to the conviction and recent execution of the two. Both had been held and convicted of murder at a McDonalds in Zhaoyuan City, brutally attacking
and murdering a woman named Wu Shuoyan, who apparently refused to give her phone number to the couple for a recruitment of theirs. The father and daughter, as well as other family members, were members of the prominent Chinese "Church of the Almighty God", also known as the 'Quannengshen'. Religious cults around China have created problems before, and "linked to kidnappings, violence and extortion, the Church of Almighty god has been on a list of 14 banned religious groups, issued by China's Ministry of Public Security, since 1995." This very unfortunate event of murder leaves no 'room' for negotiation or compensation according to the Supreme People's Court in China, due to the fact that "Zhang Fan and Lyu, another member of the group, called the victim an "evil spirit," before Zhang bludgeoned her head with a chair, then jumped on her and trampled her head". With this in mind, we can also see that China's government does not abide with recent terms of 'fairness' or 'justice' mentioned in other current event topics of the week. No doubt, there is no excuse for murder, and this cold-blooded act of outrage conjures no feelings of sympathy from me for these people, however, one must evaluate to what extent we should step in government power and execution. This applies especially to our current U.S. controversy over the death penalty and how we have viewed the government's role in society and in control over the people throughout the past.
My sympathy lies with the family and friends of the young murdered woman, and although we can hope for the best, I feel that this is not the last from this cult following.
