Baghdad Has No Curfew by Bella Dekhtyar

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/baghdad-celebrates-decade-old-curfew-lifted-n302406

Baghdad's curfew has been around for a decade, and was recently lifted on Sunday. People celebrated in the streets now that they are no longer confined to the hours of 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. The rule was made because of the violence from the U.S. led invasions many years ago. Despite the current attacks from the Islamic State Group, Baghdad lifted the restriction in belief that people will have more freedom, "to show art and creativity to the people." However, because of this freedom, more police and security forces will be added to night watch, along with more security checks. The reason being, is because of the fear that this sudden freedom may cause a higher crime rate among the people.

The reason I chose this article is because I believe it pertains to a country's freedom and past struggles. I found it devastating when I first found out about such a restriction among people that we all never thought of as a natural right. Secondly, the wars and violence are what first caused such high stakes for security in this country, and the fact it still occurs today shows the little improvement. Although I found this new right uplifting for the citizens, I also found it dangerous because of the possible increase in crime. Hopefully, because of the added police watch, it won't be such an issue. I'm not sure whether this is a win or lose situation because although the people are granted freedom for their curfew, the added security precautions may even cause unrest among the citizens if its not well executed. Relating to history, I think this shows how even small laws, like curfew, can restrict so many activities and freedom among the people.
