Elle Holland Current Event #24

Uber services are leaving Denmark in April. The government is passing a new law that will make the business untenable. The new laws are that all taxis are required to have taxi meters and video surveillance cameras. This will affect 2,000 uber drivers and 30,000 riders in Copenhagen, the only danish city where Uber is running.

This really sucks for the people in Denmark because Uber is such a revolutionary and conveinient mode of transportation. The people now have to ride in actual taxis instead of calling up an uber. I do think it is good that they are putting laws in  place to keep people safe while getting a lift.

Cincinnati Shooting | Mica Stout

Sunday night there was an open shooting at a night club called Cameo. Unfortunately, they remain on the run after leaving the sight straight after the incident. Sadly, the shooting killed 1 person, and wounded 15 others. The reason for the shooting was because there was a disagreement between a couple of peeps, so they pulled a gun and fired away. They aren't exactly sure what was said that prompted the shooter, but they do know there was a dispute.

The thing about all these shootings is that people who own guns never use them at the proper times. Especially being at a bar can make it worse because people are drunk and things get hectic. Things are said that are accidents most times but it's taken the wrong way by some.

The past history of shootings is because someone is mad at someone else or something else, and they just believe they should take out a gun and shoot which is so stupid.

Storm chasers-Jade pierre

Three storm chasers died in Texas due to a fatal car crash. Both of the drivers and the passenger died that all happened to be storm chasers. The two cars collided due to one unruly driver. One of the cars was traveling north when the diver disregarded a stop sign and ran into a vehicle traveling west. At the time the area was under a tornado warning. investigators are trying to find out further information.

There is a reason there are traffic rules. These rules keep us safe and protect us. Hopefully people learn from this driver's mistakes and improve on their driving skills.

Chloe Dupuy: iPhone 6 gets the spotlight

David Goldman reports on how apple has completed a great achievement in technological history by selling over four million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus phones in one day. The fact that it was just a pre-order surprised apple and other companies because it shows the hype on the new smartphone. Goldman also talks about how people are already waiting in line for the new iPhone right now, so they can be the first to get an iPhone.
Apple created a product in 2006 that changed the world for ever. So many different products that have been made were based of this original iPhone. So when the original gets updated, of course there is going to be a lot of buzz. Of course there is going to be a lot of interest and curiosity. Samsung claims that there product is the next big thing, but obviously it was stumped compared to a phone that hasn't even come yet. This just shows the amount of suspense and curiosity that Apple has instilled in their customers and regardless of what any other company has done. Apple has shown to be one of the top of the line mobile device companies in history. Everything they have come out with is somewhat revolutionary. And this step for them is going to be a big one.

She looked at her hands and saw that she had blisters all over them. They think this happened because she was using borax, which can be toxic, which even doctors have warned parents about.

All parents should be aware of what their child is making and what products are in it. Because slime has been a popular social media trend, she wanted to make some. It is always important to know what you are putting on your skin

Tomi Lauren Suspended After Claiming to be Pro-Choice- Victoria Gonzalez Current Events

Talk show host Tomi Lauren is famous for her very opinionated views about travel bans, Black Lives Matter movement, and transgender bathroom policies. I say this since most of her comments are seen as offensive to viewers after making statements such as, "It seems feminists are all about freedom of expression so long as the females are overweight or transgender." and also, "Americans stand up and fight for faith, family and freedom. Syrians run away."
Her show, the Blaze, is a show in which she like other talk show hosts including Trevor Noah and John Oliver talk about weekly events while adding their opinionated view about the subject. However, the Blaze, is known and has a reputation for being dedicated more towards the right-wing Republican party. Recently she has stated during an interview on the View that she is for pro-choice despite the Republican party clearly stating their beliefs about abortion and Planned Parenthood. This lead to her show being suspended for a week. Many people have mixed views about how to respond, while in my opinion, I do not think she should be suspended for saying what she thinks just because others don't agree with it. While I disagree with many of her statements most of the time, she still nevertheless has the right to make those statements. Regardless of what I think.

Paul Ryan has communicated to Republican donors that that he will keep on pushing an over haul in the health care system. Ryan was forced to to pull out the health care act after he had a lack of republican votes. He refuses to abandon the agenda to create stable healthcare and to solve the problems. Paul didn't discuss any details about his plan. he didn't take any questions about the processes that may soon take place.
I personally don't know a lot about health care but i have realized how important it is. Making sure each person has a reliable resource is very important when it comes to heath care.

There is "little doubt" that Noth Korea is planning to use nuclear weapons against the US. They are also planning for the nuclear attack to attack Americas allies. This is all because of recent activity from the communist country. They only think this is a chance of happening because they caught North Korea testing out nuclear weapons from the northwest corner and made it out all the way to the Sea of Japan, which was a 600 mile difference.
Honestly this makes me feel uncomfortable because people are already freaked out enough about ISIS, so we don't need North Korea coming over here and trying to invade us. I hope this little thing doesn't actually become a big deal and that we won't have to worry about it.

Ed Bilbey collapsed after shaking the hand of his opponent's coach. The doctor at the scene began performing CPR until the paramedics arrived. I think that it is so sad that someone was to die because of boxing. This personally effects me because my brother started boxing and wrestling this year and he enjoys it a lot. This article made me realize the dangers of boxing so I hope he is not considering this as a profession.

You can't record? Aeva Ramirez4

An attorney, who occasionally drives as an Uber For a little extra cash, was stopped by police and they arrested his client. Bright, the attorney, started recording the police officers as protection. The the officers told Bright that it was illegal to video police, while in actuality it is encouraged if you ever feel the need for it. The police were hostile to the man and called for canines to search the car. In the end both men were let go without being charged.

I believe that if somebody does not feel secure around police officers they have the right to record them as protection. Officers should try not to get hostile about it because that only makes the situation worse. I understand how the officers might get on edge being filmed during their working hours, but you have to realize you're dealing with human beings and cops don't always have the best reputation.

This honestly doesn't surprise me. I've seen dozens of celebrities arrested for drug abuse(etc.), and this is just another one to add to the list. The fact that these people think they own the world because they're a little famous is completely ridiculous. I hate to think that there were kids out there that might have looked up to this man.

Secret Chinese Sculpture/Banknote has been found ---

Specialists recently found a bank note from the Ming Dynasty in an old sculpture created in the 14th century. It is shaped like Buddha and is said to be falling apart, which is how they found the note.  It is said to be of a person who has reached Nirvana (Ultimate Enlightenment) and is very sacred to the Ming Dynasty and it's culture..

I absolutely love that they found this and I am so happy that I found this article. I really enjoy the idea of old artifacts coming back from the olden era's- as we have studied them- and getting to appreciate all of the value they hold.

I hope people find more things like this. This will bring a new level of education for kids and adults, both. :)

On Saturday, an escalator at a mall in Hong Kong suddenly reversed. The passengers on the escalator were sent tumbling down the steps. Police say the two suspects may have tampered with the machines parts. The suspects are ages 22 and 52, and they are both mechanics for the Otis Elevator Company. They have been charged with obstruction of justice. There have been 18 reported injuries with one serious head trauma. The company is still investigating the situation.

The posters were saying you can make money from it and that you had to be 14 years old and or older. This is how the men have been kidnapping our young African American females. At the bottom of the ad it was told to ask to speak to a lady named Joanne. The mother said she called and asked to speak to her. Well it was a man. The mother kept asking where does she go to sign papers, and the man got mad and hung up. He changed his number within the next week. I think that we need to be safe, but how so? We have to keep looking over our shoulders, but why?

Melanie Escalante- 3 victims in one night

Tommy Vladimir Alvarado-Ventura, an illegal citizen from El Salvador who is now a gang member in Long Island, was charged for criminal possession of a weapon, attempted murder, assault, and predatory sexual assault of a child. He has been deported 4 times and 3 of those times are because of criminal charges of a DWI, assault, contempt of court, false impersonation, and disorderly conduct. On Wednesday night, after sexually assaulting the 2 year old daughter of his girlfriend leaving her crying, he went to a bar where he got into a fight with a woman over weed. He beat her and proceeded by stabbing her multiple times. He then fled and went back home to see his girlfriend back from work. After seeing her daughters bruises, she got into an argument with him and he also stabbed her with a knife. He  claimed to be not guilty and court will be held tomorrow to handle his charges.

This makes me sick to hear of so much assault upon woman and children in one night. I don't understand how someone can just be so careless and hateful. He went from crime to crime to crime in one night and it's just so insane to me. If he's already done so much wrong then I can't imagine how much he probably got away with. It makes me sad when I plug it into present day politics. As we all know, our current president, believes that all immigrants are dangerous and should be deported. Although it doesn't apply to everyone, it does apply to this man. But because it applies to one person, others assume it applies to all. I shouldn't have to do this but I want to remind everyone that the actions of one person doesn't stand for a group of people. Furthermore, I hope this man pays for his actions and I pray for those assualted can recover both physically and mentally. I can't imagine how hard it must be to continue living a healthy life after such trama and I really just wish these victims the best with their future. http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/24/us/gang-member-deported-four-times-arrested-stabbing/index.html

Suspects are still trying to be identified.
Well gee that really sucks. People were just trying to have a good time at the nightclub when all of a sudden some guys decide to open fire because of a dispute. Unfair airline dress code by Jenny

United airlines puts a dress code for "pass riders"

This all began with United stating that women wearing leggings will not be allowed to fly because it is " not professional attire". There was an argument on twitter about this.

United stated that if people wish to enjoy the many benifita that come such as free travel passes for family and guests, should present themselves in a way that represents the airline well.

I don't think this is a very good idea, sure it's a good idea to come in a very samaged clothing piece or inappropriate clothing. But the fact that the passengers can't be comfortable while taking a long flight is not very convenient for them. Esspecially if they paid a lot of money for the tickets and if it's an early flight .

Sinai Explosion

Four Egyptian soldiers were killed in an explosion that hit their armored vehicle on Saturday in the northern Sinai peninsula, where the government is battling an Islamic State-led insurgency, security sources said.  The revolt, mounted by Islamic State's Egyptian branch, has killed hundreds of soldiers and police. Militants have also started to attack Western targets within the country.

Those four Egyptian soldiers didn't need to die that day.  We as a human species need to find a better way to voice our opinions.  More importantly though we need to find an effective not violent way of getting others to truly listen and consider new ideas or different ways of thinking.

London police have found the man who committed the deadliest terrorist attack in 12 years. The man is named Khalid Masood, an Islamic extremist, killed four people outside of the House of Parliament. Twenty nine people were sent to the hospital and six remain in critical condition.  An American tourist, a police officer, and two citizens were killed in this attack by car and knife. This has been exclaimed as an attack on democracy, and the Prime Minister Theresa May, has released a statement that terrorism will not put a toll on Britain’s freedoms and values.

You see stories about terrorist attacks in the new on a fairly common basis now. What I don’t understand is how someone can let one thing influence their life so much to the point of killing people. When I think of religion, I think of it as a guide to help you make good decisions and to be a good person. The American tourist that was killed was on his 25th wedding anniversary with his wife and this whole situation is so heartbreaking. The families of the people that passed are in my thoughts and prayers and I hope nobody else passes from this tragedy.

Grace Biltz - MAR-A-LAGO Act

Democrats want to bring attention to the lack of transparency in the Trump administration. During the Obama presidency, the records of visitors to the White House were made public. That is not the case under the Trump presidency. The Democrats are introducing the MAR-A-LAGO Act that would require the publication of visitor logs both at the White House and at Trump's Florida resort, which ironically goes by Mar-a-lago. Clearly a play on words that is meant to irritate President Trump. Democrats are well aware that this act will not pass due to the minority in Congress. However, it puts in the news the administrations lack of transparency and also highlights Trumps frequent visits to Mar-a-lago (He has been there 5 weekends and only been in office for approximately 2 months).

I think that it is great that the Democrats are bringing this to public attention. I believe any administration should be transparent and the citizens have the right to know who the president is meeting with. By introducing this act, people are more aware of this issue.

Save the Bees by Juliet Stowe

In recent world news, it seems that the bees are disappearing rapidly. Pollution, pesticides, deforestation, and colony disease are causing honey bees to die off. This may not seem like all that much of a big deal at first, but bees pollinate much of earths plants and without insects to spread pollen over half of Earths plants will die. This would lead to worldwide starvation, most likely killing thousands.

The importance of this event is obvious. No bees lead to no plants, which leads to no food. Every source of food, whether is be meat or veggies, relies on bees. The bee's disappearance is going to really hit hard on the world, and if we do nothing hundreds are going to die. To save our ecosystem we need to plant more, reduce pollution, and stop chopping down the trees. Save the bees!

Current Events: The Honey Nut Cheerios Bee is Missing
Buzz the Bee from the Honey Nut Cheerios box is missing. Parasites and harmful human activity have been killing off bees, which are a crucial part to our world food supply. Without bees we would not be able to have fruit, vegetables, or any products made from fruit or vegetables. Buzz has been removed from the boxes to raise awareness to this cause. General Mills has been sending seed packets to concerned consumers, so they can plant bee friendly habitats. The company has also been building habitats of its own to help the Bring Back the Bees Campaign.
Honey Nut Cheerios are my personal favorite cereal and I will not be able to eat it if all of the honey is gone. I also love honey in general so if the bees die out and I get no honey I will not be very happy. Also fruits and vegetables play such a big role in everyone's life around the world so without bees to pollinate the plants, they won't grow, and food prices will raise. Food is already expensive enough nowadays and many people will not be able to eat healthy at all anymore is the food prices rise any higher.

Today, Uber's president, Jeff Jones, resigned after only six months as president. He has said that he left because of the announcement that the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) was looking for a new COO (Chief Operating Officer). He said that his beliefs didn't align with what he saw at Uber. However, Uber has been facing economic troubles for a while. Primarily, they used a system called Greyball to avoid government inspection. This was a data mining program that collected data to decide who was a government inspector, and would cancel their rides. Not to mention, they were sued by a google project, Waymo, which had a similar function. The CEO, Travis Kalanick, had been facing a lot of criticism, for his role as an advisor to Donald Trump, allegations of sexual harassment, and multiple videos of him lashing out at Uber drivers and other employees. Uber seems to be going downhill fast, and its former president had the sense to jump ship early.

Tensions Increase into Government Investigations-Victoria Gonzalez Current Event

On March 20, FBI Director James Comey stated that there is no evidence of any wiretapping in  Trump Tower during the election. However, the hearing also stated that there would be continued covering and investigating on any ties the Trump Administration had with Russia. This includes not only the alleged hacking or interfering with the election but any conversations, exchanges or agreements between the two countries during the election. Meanwhile, James Comey answered questions from both sides, confirming that the allegation of Trump's predecessor President Obama ordering a wiretapping on Trump Tower would be impossible to execute. For many reasons, James Comey could not go into further detail about the investigations on Russia's relations with President Trump but he was granted permission to say that these investigations would continue with complete and total focus and seriousness. In my opinion, this is a major event we are witnessing in history. This could be the first time in which a foreign government, let alone communist, could have helped a candidate reach the Oval Office. If these allegations are true, than they need to be taken with complete and total precaution and procedure into order to see to this that this never happens again.

Israeli Airstrike

The Israeli Air Force launches several airstrikes on targets inside Syria, and for the first time, publicly claims responsibility. Syrian air defenses responded by launching missiles at the aircraft. Three Israeli Arrow missiles were launched in response to the counter-offensive. Israel stated that it was targeting suspected weapons shipments to Hezbollah in Lebanon, adding that the Israeli military will keep intervening until they believe such shipments have ceased. According to the Syrian Army, four Israeli jets entered its airspace and struck targets near Palmyra.

This is a very interesting story because of what it may lead to.  Israel has now publicly admitted to firing airstrikes at seria which means they aren't afraid for them to be firing back.  It also means that Israel might be ready for an all out war against them.

Some airplanes flying into the United States will require you to board your electronic devices larger than a phone. This method is supposed to increase security when traveling from other countries. Officials are concerned of attacks caused through electronics, and that the AQAP has been trying to attack airlines for quite a while. This policy is to prevent future possible attacks on US airlines. I feel that this policy is a little bit overreacting because locking up all devices is a little overprotective. They touch too hard , Aeva Ramirez3

In Folsom, California any games including physical contact, such as tag and touch football, are now prohibited at Gold Ridge Elementary School. David Frankel, principal at Gold Ridge, has banned these games to "protect" the kids. The ban is to prevent students from getting to aggressive and causing any major harm while playing. An interview with student, Mallory Giddens, says her principal is just trying to stop the people who "touch too hard" but that it's unfair to the students who play responsibly. If a student breaks this rule hey have to face three consequences. First, they get a warning and have to walk the yard. If they break it again they get a referral to the principle and are removed from the yard for the day. Lastly, they have a "parent-teacher-principle disciplinary conference."

First schools start banning running now we are telling kids they can't play tag! My whole childhood was built upon a democracy of the fastest kids in school and I loved it. Kids get a scrape on the knee every now and then but it doesn't mean you take away some of the most played and enjoyed games to prevent that. I think this rule should be used to keep the rougher kids from getting carried away, not to punish everyone. Unless it's a serious situation and kids are really getting injured, then I think it's a bit dramatic.

Chloe Dupuy: American journalist freed from Somali pirates

This sums up what happened to the american journalist who took an trip to Somalia and was captured by pirates and finally after two long years was freed. By what we are being told he was mostly likely freed because his family paid ransom.  Weather he was hurt or tortured was not told. I'm glad to hear hes back safe with his family. Being a journalist must be a risky job.

"American journalist Michael Scott Moore, held for more than two years by Somali pirates, has been freed. The governor of Somalia's Mudug region, Ahmed Muse, told CNN that local elders negotiated Moore's release, adding that the journalist is "physically and mentally" worn out. Moore's mother declined to comment when asked if a ransom was paid for her son. Muse said he did not know if a ransom was paid. In lawless Somalia, it's common -- particularly among pirates -- that people are kidnapped and their freedom negotiated for ransom. The pirates operate in the Gulf of Aden, one of the globe's most trafficked shipping waterways. The U.S. State Department confirmed in January 2012 that officials had spoken with Moore's family and been in touch with contacts in Kenya and Somalia to get more information. The department noted at the time that a travel warning for Somalia cautioned U.S. citizens of the risks of traveling to the country and recommended avoiding it."

The American Marie Antoinette By Jenny

On Thursday Trump had his new budget realeased  for the hear of 2017. Which includes getting rid of many programs that would help the poor and elderly. He then proceeded to go once again to his luxurious private country club estate Mar-a-lago.

Besides him making a similar "Let them eat cake" statement of his own, His estate would make Marie Antoinette feel right at home with its 16th century style and a ballroom with 7 million dollars worth of gold leaf.

It would not be as bad if he was only going to his estate, but the fact that we have payed 15 thousand dollars over these five times he has gone to his estate from our taxes is not fair.

I think that he is just using to much of our money for his own personal use and taking away things that help and benifit us, the citizens.

I'm deadas b. bees b dyin

Bees are dying at an alarming rate. It's extremely possible that bees can go extinct very soon. This would cause most plants to be harder to grow, which would affect most of our foods, because bees pollinate 35%  of the world's food. Cheerios recently took their mascot off all cereal boxes to raise awareness.

This is important because we need bees for 35% of our food. If bees go extinct, we will have to replace the 35% of food with wanna bees. HA. (It's more than likely going to be soy products) (which are nasty) (no offense soy)

Where Are All The Bees?!?! -Alex Travell

http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/16/health/bees-cheerios-campaign-trnd/index.html

Recently, Cheerios pulled their mascot, Buzz, off the boxes. It is unclear to me why they did this, but I'm guessing it's to help convey the severity of the dramatic drop in the bee population. Bees pollinate 35% of the world's food, and many species depend on them. According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, a bee species in the US was declared endangered.

I knew the bee population was decreasing at an alarming rate, yet I didn't think it would get this bad. I thought something would have already been done about this, yet nothing has changed. I hope someone out there has a plan to turn this whole situation around, for we definitely need bees in this world.

Cities in America are gonna start fining $1000 tickets to places with foul smell. In Las Vegas they tried this and used a tool called the Nasal Ranger. This tool helps enforce the measure of the smell. While they were testing this tool out on places in Las Vegas they would give the property owners who had the bad smell the option to either take the fine or clear the air.
This is actually so ridiculous, when I read the title of this article I had to read more because I've never been shocked/surprised by something like this. I really hope this doesn't actually become a thing because it's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Freedom from kidnapping | Mica Stout

An Australian worker in Afghanistan was kidnapped while traveling by car with driver, Basir Mujahid. The gunman was unknown, but the area she was taken was near Kabul's Qala-e-Fatullah, back in November. She worked for the Agency Coordinating Body for Afghan Relief.  They released her with the help and support from the authorities in Afghanistan.

There actually have been many kidnappings in Afghanistan, even if you are from there you can still get kidnapped. Knowing that the place you live in could be very dangerous is scary, you never know when you could be snatched of the streets, or on your way home from school. I am very fortunate to live in a place where I could feel somewhat safe 99.9% of the time. The crimes that happen around the world could be prevented if we have enough support and help.

Save the Bees- Melanie Escalante

Pollinator bees around the world have been dying at a shocking rate due to changes in the climate, loss of habitats, parasites, pesticides, and dangerous chemicals. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that a population of bees living in our country is at risk of going extinct. Since bees pollinate a crucial percentage of the world's food supply, their condition could put other species and crops in danger as well. Due to this outbreak, the Honey Nut Cheerio's bee, Buzz, has been taken off of the boxes to bring awareness to the problem. Honey Nut Cheerios has also launched a campaign to  #BringBackthebees by giving packets of wildflower seeds to be planted, as wildflowers have all the necessities for a bee to continue its cycle.

It wasn't until recently that I realized just how crucial bees are in our everyday lives. A chain of more alarming events could happen if we don't help bring the bees back to a healthy state. There's so much we can do to help them since they really do a lot for us. I highly recommend everyone plant wildflower seeds and do everything humanly possible to keep them alive. It's weird how the little things can make such a big impact on our lives. This just goes to show that we need to stop taking everything for granted and take care of our environment and the organisms living in it. I hope we can work together to fix this problem.

Grace Biltz | NEA and NEH

President Trump's recent budget proposal threatens the existence of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The budget eliminated all funding for these two federal agencies. Advocacy groups, individuals and art institutions are fighting back and are trying to remind others of the value of the arts in our daily lives. We see our funding actively making a difference with individuals of all ages in thousands of communities, large, small, urban and rural, and in every Congressional District in the nation,” said Jane Chu, NEA chairperson.
Major metropolitan areas may not need the support of organizations like the NEA because they have vibrant cultural institutions. However, more rural communities need this support in order to promote art among their citizens.

There is hope however. Widespread public support and support within Congress could help save the funding for the NEA and the NEH. Advocates remain hopeful because Congress will need to approve the final budget. Everyone can help by contacting their local representatives and voicing their support for these two federal agencies.

"The art are not a frill. The arts are a response to our individuality and our nature, and help to shape our identity. What is there that can transcend deep difference and stubborn divisions? The arts. They have a wonderful universality. Art has the potential to unify. It can speak in many languages without a translator. The arts do not discriminate. The art lift us up."

--Barbara Jordan, Former Congresswoman
Barbara Jordan said it right. The arts a powerful part of our society and culture and need to be supported. I hope we all do our part by reaching out to our representatives to help support these vital federal agencies.

Northeastern Storm - Lauren Rothert

A late winter storm has hit the northeast with loads of snow. There are currently 15 million people with a blizzard threat in their area. Thousands of schools are closed, and over 6,000 flights have been canceled. Over the next few days, south of New York state and Pennsylvania are expected to get 3 inches of snow per hour. New York City has missed the worst of the storm. Massachusetts is also expected to get strong winds and up to 24 inches of snow. Governors issued states of emergency and several travel bans.

I can't believe a winter storm is hitting so late into the season. There are many homes without power, I hope they are not left without it for too long. 28 accidents have been reported, and I hope there have been no deaths due to these accidents. Hopefully everyone stays safe during this storm.

Successful Thrust Test in North Korea -Alex Travell

http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/19/asia/north-korea-high-thrust-engine-test/index.html

As we know, North Korea has been testing missiles and threatening us by saying they'd us them. Regarding to their tests, it has been discovered that they have successfully tested their new high-thrust engine. During this test, they were measuring the thrust power in the combustion.
According to CNN military Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, these advances in North Korea's rocket system could help with the country's development of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles(ICBMs).

This honestly scares the crap out of me, for I'm already worried about North Korea, but the fact that their tests are successful gives me goosebumps. I hope our country is ready for anything, for I don't want my fellow Americans stressing over the idea of being in danger.

97 Year Old Twins - Lauren Rothert

Martha Williams and Jean Haley are 97 year old twins. Over the weekend in Barrington, Rhode Island the siblings were both found dead. After having dinner with her sister Jean Haley on Friday, it looks as if March Williams fell in the driveway when walking back to her car. Police believe Williams's sister Haley tripped on the rug in the garage while running inside to call for help. Although the exact causes of these deaths has not been identified, it is believed that the sisters froze to death due to the extremely cold temperatures in Rhode Island.

This is such a sad story. I can't believe the twins died on the same day with such a short distance between the two of them. I hope the Police are able to identify the cause of deaths so the family is able to regain some closure.

This is disappointing because people should have rights. In trump's America, everyone is becoming more and more disappointed in the decisions that he and his administration are making. He needs to keep us in mind and take our opinions into consideration.

This year, chicken farmers are being hit by the biggest outbreak of bird flu since 2015. This new strain has been killing birds off left and right, which could be a huge problem for farmers. Chickens have already been engineered to the point where they can't survive on their own. Now that they are actually threatened by an outside factor, the odds of survival until slaughter are much too low. Scientists are already working to stop this, but if nothing happens, the chicken farming industry could take a big hit.

Disney's new live action remake of beauty and the beast, scheduled to release later this month, could be banned from being shown in Russia. The Russian lawmakers claimed it had "propaganda of sin and perverted sexual relationships"... and its a disney movie... Russia as a whole is trying to stop the spread of ideas about homosexuality towards children and anywhere it could be spread. Even though the movie barely suggests of this the Russian government still finds the movie inappropriate.

I think it is ridiculous that they will not allow a DISNEY MOVIE with a couple controversial scenes to be realized. It is important to inform the youth so that new can as a whole world begin to change, improve and be more accepting instead of shielding them all from life.

A Manhattan jury Monday convicted a career thug of fatally shooting an NYPD cop in the head during a foot chase in East Harlem as many officers and the victim’s family wept in the gallery. Tyrone Howard, 32, was found guilty of first-degree murder, robbery and a slew of other charges for the tragic slaying of Officer Randolph Holder in October 2015.

Today, republicans in Congress finally revealed their plan to repeal and replace Obamacare. Their new plan doesn't focus on penalizing people for not having healthcare, but, rather, it works on a system of tax credits. It continues in Obama's wake in allowing children to stay on their parents' health plan until 26, and forbidding insurers for denying those with preexisting conditions. Although it seems like a good system based on choice, those who cannot afford tax credits cannot afford healthcare. It allows the well off to receive slightly cheaper healthcare, but the poor, who need it most, can't afford it. It will be an uphill battle for this to be approved, and I hope that it is improved quite a bit before it makes it through Congress.

A long time ago when the Spanish came to Texas, they also brought hogs. Which are now taking over many places in Texas and destroying things. Such as, lawans, vegetable gardens, livestock tanks, flower beds, cables that go to electronics. Luckily because people hunt the hogs it kills some of them off. But because of the over population they came up with a poison called "Kaput Feral Hog Lure," and it makes human blood thinner and kills the pigs.
I hate that they have to poison the hogs just to not have them over populate so much, but I understand it's a part of life and that eventually everyone/everything dies. Hopefully they can give these hogs to countries where food is scarce and then they will also have food and they won't starve to death.

Separating Families | Mica Stout

Homeland security is trying to separate children from their families one they come to the US from the south. They plan on putting them in foster care or somewhere else one the children arrive. They believe the parents should be put in "detention" and the kids should be sent away if they come in illegally through the southern border. They also believe the families could be a threat.

There's no reason for all the permanent travel ban and separations of parents and children just because they aren't from the US. There should be no hazards with people who just want to come to North America. There's already enough problems with all the airports and cancellations, so it doesn't help to do this.

Reassigned, Aeva Ramirez2

In Panama City, Fla. an elementary teacher posted on Facebook her opinion on Trump's immigration policies. The teacher expressed her feelings about the immigrants who stayed home from work for a day. She expressed how she was happy for the deportation and that there would be "less mouths to feed." Many parents were unhappy with her post especially considering most of her students were Latino.

Well I usually try to stay away from politics but I seem to be on a role with teachers so.....here yeah go. I believe that everyone has the right to express their own opinion however I think that her opinion was a little harsh especially considering that she teaches to a large minority group. She later took her post down which I'm sure was appreciated. I don't believe it should cost her job like I said people are entitled to their opinions. I only hope she could be mindful of what she says.

Liza Kaye: Supreme Court won't hear transgender bathroom case

This week, the Supreme Court sent a high school student's transgender bathroom case down to a lower court, disappointing the student. Gavin Grimm, a local high school student from Virginia, is discriminated every single day for being a transgender. Gavin's hopes are to be able to choose which bathroom they prefer to use. They also want the ability to outlaw certain state locker room laws. However, Gavin stays optimistic about the painful situation. Gavin claims this conflict to be simply be just a bump in the road, not the end to the road.

This is very relevant and relatable to the equal rights movements. From women's voting rights, to African American rights, everyone was still fighting for equal rights. This just comes to show that equal rights are still being fought for everyday, and have been for a very long time.
Donald Sign's a New Travel Ban - Caleb Gutierrez

President Donald Trump signed a new executive order Monday that bans immigration from six Muslim majority countries, taking Iraq off of the previous order in January, and puts a temporary 'blanket ban" on all refugees.
The new travel ban comes six weeks after Trump's original executive order caused chaos at airports nationwide before it was blocked by federal courts.

This ban is ridiculous. There shouldn't be a ban on travel to here, in a country that's supposed to be a free country. Donald is hurting our relationships with other countries, and that is gonna hurt our economy. If our economy is crazy, people will get mad. When people get mad, bad things happen. So President Trump is terrorizing the United States.

Due to a recent chemical attack, more than 57,000 civilians of Mosul have fled the city. Because of this, the Iraqi government said they are going to "take back the western part of the city from ISIS.
They need to act fast, though, for ISIS's ranks rose by more than  10,000 in just two days. Also, it is uncertain when ISIS will strike again, for there seem to be no patterns between attacks.

Although this isn't anywhere near me, I still fear for my safety, for terrorists HAVE gotten into the US before, and they could probably find another way in. Plus, with a big mouth as president, we definitely aren't safe.

Chloe Dupuy: New York mayor adds one hour to school day at struggling public schools

The New York mayor  Bill de Blasio has come up with a plan to add an hour to school for the students who struggle to learn. its costing $150 million. Will it pay off? Maybe its not the teachers that are failing but the students who are resisting to learn. the education systems main goal is to improve 94 of the New York schools that had the lowest test scores. will the extra hour frustrate and exhaust the kids? other way to fix the problem is to help with their mental and physical health. "We’ll give them the tools, the leadership, and the support they need to succeed — and we’ll hold them accountable for delivering higher achievement,” de Blasio said. So is it the students to blame? Is the extra hour supposed to serve as a punishment if so? These are all the questions that popped up into my head when i read this article. The New York education system cant fail now, then our generation will grow slow and that's leaving others to do the work.

Elizabeth McCullough- Trump Says Obama Tapped His Phones

Synopsis- President Trump has informed the masses via the twitter that former president Obama was surveilling the Trump Tower during the election. He says that Obama tapped his phones and was listening in on his conversations, comparing the situation to the Nixon/Watergate scandal. He gave no evidence to back his claims, and officials are denying such events occurred.

Analysis- Okay, what the hell. Now I'm not saying his claims are completely impossible, because they are not. It is possible that Obama could have ordered surveillance on Trump through official channels or otherwise. But to proclaim something of this magnitude without any evidence is improper. Not only that, he did it using twitter. TWITTER. He's behaving like a teenage girl who just got dumped. Oy vei.

Synthesis- As Trump has already so gracefully tweeted, this can be compared to the Watergate scandal of president Nixon, which including "bugging" the work places of his political opponents.

Landfalls in Madagascar
Tropical Cyclone Enawo made landfall March 7 in Madagascar in what turned out to be the island's strongest landfall in 13 years. This was only detecting a few hours before it happened so there was not much that could be done.  It was a tragic natural disaster destroying 2,000 homes and killing 81 people.
This is a tragic story.  Its terrible to think that one day your life could be going great and then suddenly you lose your entire home.  I think this serves as a good reminder for the whole world that you should live everyday to the fullest and truly enjoy the great life you have.

MLB Coach Hit by Foul Ball - Lauren Rothert

On Saturday, San Francisco Giants first base coach was hit in the face by a foul ball. During the game against the Kansas City Royals, Jose Alguacil was sitting in a chair against the backstop behind home plate when the batter nicked the ball which hit Alguacil drawing blood. Alguacil fell face-first into the dirt and laid motionless. After being placed on a stretcher, the first base coach was care flighted to a nearby hospital in Phoenix. Surgery was performed for Alguacil's broken nose and deep lacerations on the face. Because the season has not started yet, and the teams are still in Spring Training, many managers and coaches sit at the backstop for a closer view, mainly because rules allow it.

I believe that a situation like this should have never happened. Even though the season has not started yet, there should still be rules and regulations. I hope MLB officials create a new rule to help avoid these problems from happening again in the future. I hope Alguacil is okay, it was his first year coaching the Giants. He is a very good coach with a lot to offer.

Melanie Escalante- Russia bans Beauty and the Beast

In 2013 Russia created a law blocking "gay propaganda". Russia's anti-gay laws have been strongly enforced by Milonov, rule maker of Russia who believes that homosexuals are "sick and crazy people". Because of these beliefs, Russia is trying to ban Beauty and the Beast", featuring Emma Watson. Apparently in the movie, the character of Gaston's sidekick, appeals as a gay man who is confused with his feelings.  Milonov wants to ban it, as he sees it as "homosexual propaganda".

I can't believe that the rulemaker of Russia has such feelings. I didn't know that the country had to deal with a man with hateful opinions. Many are upset by this, including me. It sucks that this country can't enjoy a movie because the ruler doesn't approve. People should be able to watch what they want and do as they please. I hope something stops this from happening.

Help Astronauts' Eyes

Spending time in space can change many things, including your eyesight. A North Texas doctor has spent years trying to figure out why this is. the leading theory during the time was that microgravity raises pressure in the head and reshapes the eyes. Dr. Benjamin Levine decided to truly find the reason for this by conducting an experiment of his own. He took 8 healthy cancer patient survivors, who still had their ports in their heads, and convinced them to get on a plane that would stimulate the zero gravity found on the ISS. The ports would help him measure their intracranial pressure. He concluded that astronauts never get to rest their brains in lower pressure while still in zero gravity. Scientist are now working with UnderAmour to create a sort of sleeping sack that can be worn to relieve the pressure.

Kate Boyer-Is Food Production One of the Leading Causes of Global Warming?

Who would have thought that a loaf of bread could cause our environment to suffer. A significant amount of energy is needed to produce a single loaf of bread; yes, the baking process makes up a fraction of the energy usage, but the main culprit is simply the production of wheat grain and other raw materials. For those who are in Mrs. Gay's class, you have already been introduced to the brutality of the food industry. However, we only briefly skimmed the surface of the impact on the environment. According to CNN, "[food] causes about a third of total greenhouse gas emissions... We found that ammonium nitrate fertilizer alone accounts for 43% of the the greenhouse gas emissions... Without fertilizer, either we produce less food or we use much more land to produce the same amount, at a greater economic and environmental cost". There are many solutions to the fertilization problem, some being the recycling of human and agricultural waste and treating it as manure, another being GMO's, and also changing the human diet to consume less meat. The problem with cutting out meat(no pun intended) is that meat is the easiest way to access all the proteins we need. With meat, your body immediately gets access to all the amino acids needed all at once; however many other sources of protein lack at least one of the essential amino acids. Most people are more concerned with the well-being of humans and animals than that of the environment; many aren't even aware of the full extent of the damage it causes to any of the three factors previously mentioned. The phrase "ignorance is bliss," takes on a whole new meaning when the ignorant are unaware of their lack of education towards the food industry. Being oblivious, people aren't as willing to take the necessary measure to save the planet. This will probably take many more years of intense studying and research to find a solution in helping decrease the greenhouse gas emissions from food.
I thought this was a really interesting article because humans have been eating meat earlier than 4500 BC. I also thought I would share this to bring more awareness to the fact that a lot of our food, even if healthy for human consumption, is unhealthy for the environment.

Investigation Launched Against Obama Administration-Victoria Gonzalez Current Event

President Trump made a new statement claiming that the Obama administration tapped phones in Trump Tower a few works before the election results. Where is the evidence for such a claim? Don't look for any, it doesn't exist. Sean Spicer later said in a statement via twitter, "Reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling. President Donald J. Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016." Although even though Spicer also claimed that no further comments will be made about these investigations, there is still a serious lack of evidence to push these investigations any further.
I find it ridiculous that Trump makes these claims without any evidence, proof or actual valid beliefs. Not only that but when he throws these comments out into the media, agencies like the FBI or CIA have to spend time, and money that could be used on things that actually need investigating on trying to find evidence that shows no signs of existing! He needs to learn to act more presidential, and this does not include reading off of a teleprompter for a single speech towards congress. That does NOT count as presidential, it only shows that you can talk for an hour or two without making irrelevant comments or boasting about how tremendous your staff is.

Grace Biltz | Yelp Supports Transgender Rights

Yelp is taking a stance to support transgender rights. In February, President Trump limited the rights of transgender students public schools by eliminating protections that the Obama administration had put in place. Obama’s protections allowed students to use bathrooms based on their gender identity.

Yelp which is a ratings and review website is using their product to support transgender rights. The Yelp website has a new feature that will help transgender people find businesses that provide gender neutral restrooms. This follows a movement by the tech industry to support this cause. The movement includes tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, and Google. Yelp also joined 52 other companies in support of a lawsuit brought by Gavin Grimm that will be heard by the Supreme Court this month.

I think it is amazing how Yelp and many other tech companies are coming together to support transgender rights. It’s ridiculous how our president is limiting transgender people to going to a specific bathroom based on the gender they were physically born with. I think that people should be allowed to go to any bathroom based on their gender identity.

Unique Asteroids by Jules Stowe

Recently, asteroids have made as one of NASA's top priorities. The recent discovery program of NASA's has confirmed two missions that evolve around these fast traveling rocks. "We have never seen anything like this," says one of of the scientists at ASU. The latest focus of missions is Psyche, a entirely metal asteroid that will end up being the first of its kind to be investigated by NASA. The common theory is that this space rock was once the core of a planet, much like Earth. The planet's outer layers were stripped off somehow leaving the center to drift through space. Scientist hope to investigate and learn more about what our planet may end up like in the following moths.

This is extremely important because this could change the way we predict earths future. The core seems to have most of the chemical makeup of our own earth, and could very well have supported life. One day this planet is going to die, its really just a matter of time. But with this new discovery we can better prepare and predict our inevitable doom.

Boko Haram Cannot Crush The Spirit Of Children - Mila Fisher

Boko Haram is a militant Islamic group working out of Nigeria, whose purpose is to institute Sharia or Islamic Law. They have committed many terrorist acts, including suicide bombings and more.
Boko Haram violence has affected millions of children in many ways; some have been abducted and killed, others have been forced from their homes and schools. These children have been reported to be at least twelve years of age. Even though these horrific events have scarred many children, both mentally and physically, their spirits are not broken. They still hold on to their hopes and dreams, and to the belief that things will get better.
This provides contrast to how well off we live compared to some, and yet they still have not lost hope. This is a very important for all of us to think about, and send love to these children.

http://www.offthegridnews.com/current-events/former-reagan-official-warns-fiscal-bloodbath-imminent-govt-to-run-out-of-cash/
writes that the Government could be running out of money.
"WASHINGTON – The United States is on the brink of a “fiscal bloodbath” that will cause the government to run out of cash, according to former Reagan budget director David Stockman.
Stockman served as the director of the Office of Management and Budget under Reagan and believes debt will bring the United States to its knees.
“I think we are likely to have more of a fiscal bloodbath rather than fiscal stimulus,” Stockman told USAWatchdog.com. “Unfortunately for Donald Trump, not only did the public vote the establishment out, they left on his doorstep the inheritance of 30 years of debt build-up and a fiscal policy that’s been really reckless in the extreme.
“People would like to think he’s the second coming of Ronald Reagan and we are going to have morning in America.  Unfortunately, I don’t think it looks that promising because Trump is inheriting a mess that pales in significance what we had to deal with in January of 1981 when I joined the Reagan White House as budget director.”
Stockman’s belief is that the national debt is so high it will be impossible for America to pay it off."
This means bad news for Americas and Government workers alike.

"On Jan. 31, President Trump nominated Judge Neil M. Gorsuch to the Supreme Court..."
"If confirmed, Judge Gorsuch would restore the 5-to-4 split between liberals and conservatives on the court, handing Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, 80, who votes with both blocs, the swing vote. He could be shaping American law for decades to come." - https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/01/learning/lesson-plans/evaluating-trumps-nomination-of-judge-gorsuch-to-the-supreme-court-a-lesson-plan.html?rref=collection%2Fspotlightcollection%2Flearning-current-events&action=click&contentCollection=learning&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=4&pgtype=collection&_r=0

This website explains the importance of a Supreme Court Judge and explains the kind of power they have, and where they get their power. Although the new nominee hasn't been confirmed, people are still talking about what this might mean for Americas in the future.

"The Islamic State claims responsibility for a New Year's Day shooting at the Istanbul nightclub Reina that leaves at least 39 people dead, wounding 70. ISIS names the assailant a "hero soldier of the caliphate" who acted in retaliation for Turkish military operations against the terror group in northern Syria." - http://www.infoplease.com/world/events/isis-timeline.html

I don't personally have much of an opinion on this news, and the websites aren't giving me much information, but from what I've gathered, The Islamic State takes responsibility for a shooting in a nightclub, January 2017
