Chinese fishing boats sink, 74 people missing by Josie Blossfeld

Summary: Today, during the storm named "Typhoon Wutip", three Chinese fishing boats sank in the South China Sea. 74 people remain missing, 14 survivors having been rescued noon today. 60 total people have been found dead in the capsized ships.

Analysis: This is a terrible tragedy that has taken place, and I hope the loved ones of the fishing crew members can at least know what happened to their relatives soon so that they might find closure. Though I understand it was mostly due to severe weather problems that the ships sank, I still think they should fix the ships and warning alarms to benefit from this. It will make it so that it is easier for the crew to be able to reach a safe distance from the boat (so that the suction caused when the boat begins to sink doesn't pull them under).

plane crash, NO SURVIVORS by Polly Hynds-Riddle

a plane crashed into a santa Monica airport hanger. After landing it is thought that a tire popped causing it to crash. there were n survivors but the number of people who were on the plane has not been released by the coroner yet. it has been said that Morely builders think their CEO and his son were on the plane.

i think this is an awful occurrence and it is terrible for people to not know exactly what happened and to be so in the dark about whether or not the people they know are alive or missing or what. over all with the lack of information with the case it is hard to have a strong feeling about the details and all i know is  it is a ver tragic occurrence.

the rare triplets: Reagan Leslie

Recently, A woman and her husband, had three unexpected identical baby girls. Karen Gilbert, 32, had a C-section with her daughters two months early and they spent six weeks in intensive care. After the babies stayed there for six weeks, the babies FFfion, Maddison and Paige were ready to go home. When the babies were first here, they could fit in one hand. "They're started to feel like they're our own. This story is very inspiration because things happen like that every day. Things like abortions, pre-mature babies that don't live very long, and etc. I truly believe that they're going to stay together and be one big happy family

China Will Help Africa in its Industrialization – by Frances Garnett

A report written by the United Nations stated recently that if Africa is going to become industrialized more, it needs to get a "commodity-based strategy", so that their economy relies on more secondary economic activities to add value to the raw natural resources they sell, instead of the primary ones they are involved in now. Africa is in dire need of industrialization to reduce poverty and improve their economic conditions, but also to provide jobs to the growing numbers of unemployed youth. The thing is that at their current rate, Africa cannot provide those jobs alone, and needs help from other countries, like China. China has undergone a huge amount of industrialization in recent times and can be a role model for African countries who want to same amount of growth in their economies. People in Africa are already calling on China to invest more and establish job-creating factories, and it's already greatly involved and teaching lessons to countries. Not only could this benefit African nations, but China as well. To maintain their amazing growth, China needs to relocate some of its manufacturing industries to other countries with large populations, which makes Africa a top choice. A shoe company has already been transferred to Ethiopia, giving jobs to 2,500 people and increasing. Also, being closer to the materials for manufacturing will make productions and transportation costs decrease.

I am so happy an opportunity to improve lives for people in less developed countries has come up, but I am a bit worried about this industrialization coming from manufacturing factories and other things like that. China's current economy is currently full of factories that often have cheap labour and pollute the environment, and I don't think that should be an example for other countries. Having tons of more factories and manufacturing plants in the world could use up so much coal, oil and/or electricity, most likely quickly advancing global climate change. Also, the natural resources Africa has may be exploited and become 'extinct', and factories contain chemicals and health hazards that could badly affect the people working there, and finally there's also a chance they'll be taken advantage of and be payed very little. On the other hand, like the article said, this can really give African countries the economic boost they need to help their people. Because this article was produced by a Chinese newspaper, it no doubt will show China's involvement in a good light, as most countries have a natural bias to do that. The main ideas that the article is trying to convey are that China's involvement in necessary to African industrialization, and that this will benefit China's economic growth as well as Africa's. This article is important because it shows us what a country must go through in today's world to see economic growth and raise living standards, even if it's not the ideal option. But, it also is relevant because we can choose our perspective and can help us look at different countries and come up with solutions to help growth in others.

    Sexting. By; Kindle Kelley

Sexting is a serious crime, especially now since a 44 year old teacher named Bryan Tyman was caught sexting 3 of his students and sending nude pictures of his areas to them. He is also charged with having sex with one of his former students before she was 16, because 16 is the legal age for where they are from.

In my opinion that is disgusting, you send your kids to school to be educated. Not to be sexually preyed on. If I was the girls parents I would be furious. These girls were not even 16, and why in the world would a 44 year old man want anything to do with girls 16 and younger? Now that this has happened I wonder if he has also done it to other students but they are scared to admit it? If I was one of the parents I would definitely be looking into that. The fact that this man isn't even going to prison disgusts me, how much more does he need to do with these girls to go to prison? I would be furious.

Teachers train to face school shooter by Paige Kutschall

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/30/living/schools-teacher-shooter-defense-training/index.html?hpt=us_t3

When you hear and empty clip falling from a gun, that is that best time to attack a shooter. Claims Zach Hudson at a free active shooter self-defense workshop for teachers and school staff members with his partner Mike Friedman. Because of the shootings in Newtown, Conecticut, schools are upping their game. Not only are they arming teachers and adding security officials, some teachers are taking the extra step to prepare themselves for an unpredictable tragedy. Many people believe that the only way to really make schools safer is to make these self-defense workshops mandatory for all educators. "It's very sad that we have to go through this kind of training to know how to protect our kids," said Marsha Taylor, a teacher of 25 years who works with young children. The workshops gave educators the tools and information on how to react if a shooter enters the school and ways to disarm the shooter.

I think that it should be mandatory for anyone that works in a place where they are taking care of children to go through this kind of workshop. Who knows if the day will come when people start shooting in day cares, or different extra-curricular activities. If someone walked into my dance studio with a gun, no one would have any idea what to do. I agree that it is very sad that we have to think like this, but we cannot control how other people we react. And no matter how hard we try, not every person in this world will be a good person.

Kenyan intelligence warned of Al-Shabaab threat before mall attack

    Summary:

A number of Kenya's Cabinet members and defense officials were warned about the possibility that the terror group Al-Shabaab was planning to carry out a Westgate-style attack a year before gunman stormed the Nairobi mall, according to several police and intelligence sources. According to officials Al-Shabba sent out several threats across regions of Kenyan. The mall was already a target for an attack, for it is favored by westerners and tourists. Military doctors said that the terrorists tortured hostages, such ad militants severed hands, cut off noses, and in some cases hung hostages. Many family members are still unsure if loved ones are still alive. This is a a horrible situation and I truly hope this will never happen again. Nobody deserves this type of torture and grief, especially innocent people.

    Analysis:

This situation in my opinion is just too horrific to even read about. Just hearing about hearing about these innocent people being held hostage bring tears to my eyes. The security around the world really needs to step it up! What else is it going to take to open everyone's eyes? My prayers go out to the loved ones of the hostages and people affected by this horrific incident and I hope this never happens again.

Royal Mint Prints Special Coins For Prince George's Christening. by Sam Stromness

In about a month William and Kate's baby, Prince George will be Christened. For this special occasion the royal mint in great Britain is printing a set of limited edition coins that are very expensive. These coins, are made of valuable metals and are likely to sell for thousands of dollars.
I chose to write about this article because I wanted to do something more lighthearted compared to what we typically see in the news. I think this article shows some cultural aspects of Britain that differ from the U.S. The royal family still holds the position of a celebrity even with the relatively minimal power they hold. Their culture fro the past still shines through today and I thought that was interesting. -SAM

Six hikers dead. By: Adrienne Healy

Six hikers reported missing after going on an early morning hike shortly after the six hikers were reported dead, death caused by a rockslide. A 13-year-old girl was found and dug up from the debris and flown straight to a children's hospital her condition is unknown. Considering how fairly new to this news is the cause of the rock slide is still to be determined. The names of the six hikers have not been released and it is unknown whether the six hikers were related or not. So sad that the six people were killed after just going on a fun morning walk that turned out to be deadly.

    Selfies too sexy?? JULIA WOLTJEN

SUMMARY: Some parents are starting to become concerned about kids and their "sexy" selfies. They say that they some of the pictures posted are too mature for them and that they don't want their kids to be exposed to these photos. Some may even say that they are sexting and completely inappropriate.

ANALYSIS: Personally I think that some of these selfies should be monitored more, but you can't control everything. And I think that your personal rights shouldn't be messed with, I mean do what you want to do. I mean parents can't control other people's kids...that's ridiculous! So I'm kind of on both sides for this one.

Mia Sanchez - Plastic on Saturn's moon?

NASA has recently discovered propylene (a chemical ingredient in many plastics) in the atmosphere of Titan.  Titan is Saturn's largest moon, and one of the only bodies in the solar system with an atmosphere made of hydrocarbons.  Propylene has never been found anywhere other than earth, which makes this discovery is especially interesting.  Scott Edgington, a leader of the Cassini space project, explained that this new discovery will help us better understand the atmosphere of Titan.  Although I maintain that space exploration is frivolous, it is cool that we know so much about space, and that we have so much yet to learn.

Smart Roads = Efficiency by Bob Cummins

Daan Roosegaarde, a Dutch designer, is in the process of creating Smart Highways.  These roads could charge electric cars while they drive over them, reduce energy with street lights equipped with sensors, and, along with other things, warn drivers of ice patches with digital snowflakes painted on the road.   In Brabant, a province in the Netherlands, they will finish a 150-meter stretch of Smart Highway later this year.
This idea isn't brand new.  In 1991, a Virginia Tech professor had the idea of embedding sensors in the road to warn drivers about its conditions.
Roosegaarde is thinking about applying this technology to illuminate airport landing strips, and bicycle lanes.

This is cool and informative, but it could be distracting.  Jennifer Booton, the writer of the article didn't express her opinion.  This is a revolutionary start of a new technology and industry that could help many people.  I've never heard of this technology before, but I am astounded by what I've read in this article.  This article is meant to inform people about this technology that could change how we think of roads in general.

Scary Seattle Storm by Zoey Crummey

A tornado hit Seattle hard today, damaging several factories in the process. Fortunately there were no injuries, but this is a very rare occurrence. Washington normally only gets one or two tornadoes a year, and they are very small. This year it has been very rainy, some of the Northwest has received more rain over the weekend than usual over a month. There are have also been major power outages, with over 100,000 people out of service due to the storm.

I think this is really scary, the weather there is completely abnormal and not to mention dangerous! This shows how real global climate change is, and that our world really needs to make more of an effort to help our environment. When will people realize that we are going to destroy our earth? I'm glad that there were no injuries, but this shows everyone how badly we need to change.

Kiyanna Elliott Hollywood couple stopped by police, say they were racially profiled

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/30/showbiz/cherie-johnson-dennis-white-police-irpt/index.html?hpt=hp_c2

African-American couple Cherie Johnson and Dennis White say they were wrongly stopped by police, put in handcuffs and questioned during a  weekend getaway in South Carolina. They say the incident happened because of their race. Johnson and White say they were on their way to Myrtle Beach for a quick romantic getaway when they pulled off the road and parked by a cotton field because Johnson had never seen cotton before and wanted to take a picture. When they walked back to the car, they noticed a police car parked behind theirs. White and Johnson says that the officer harshly questioned them about drugs and the cash he found in their bags. White said that Officer Shad Barfield told Johnson there was a warrant for her arrest, which she argued, and the officer backed off. He handcuffed White and then Johnson but did not arrest them. After carefully searching the car, the officer removed the handcuffs and let the couple go.White says he won't stop talking about the incident until officer is and punished.

This is really irritating especially since I am African-American. Unfortunately, we have been and will continuously be treated this way because of our race. Its not even just African Americans. A lot of people of from different races get racially profiled. The middle eastern people will always be targeted because of what people of their culture has done to the US. All I can say is that the officers and people in general who racial profile will never stop happening. We just have to hope these officers can be dealt with so we can go on with our lives.

3-D Printing in space? I think yes! Hannah Kerman

We have all heard about the new 3-D printer and how it layers plastic to make objects. Well, NASA is loving the idea and now, they want to see if it will work in space. NASA is hoping that the 3-D printing will help the safety in space, as well as not have to find a way to make an object small and then disassemble it in space. NASA is hoping that if an astronaut has to complete a mission, they won't have to worry about it being up there or not. Some problems with 3-D printing are that it makes objects out of plastic, and some objects can only be metal, so for those objects that work best as metal, they're going to have to either make do with plastic or take it up there as is.
I think that this is definitely a breakthrough for science, because now, they won't have to worry about running out of materials and it can help improve the safety of the crew on board. If something breaks, they can print a new one, if something goes wrong, they can fix it by printing! This project could save lives just as long as it works!

    It's Our Favorite Color

    http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-c1-san-diego-sextuplets-20130920-dto,0,4201273.htmlstory

Gabriela and Benigo Ireta could not have children. When the doctor put hormone injections into Gabriela, hoping at least two would be fertilized, four other eggs also bloomed. The sextuplets stayed in San Diego until they were six, because their parents were not born in the U.S. Benigo stayed because his job allowed him to, while Gabriela took the children to Guadalajara, Mexico. The children have many questions like, "Why do people call us gringos (white people from America)?"They miss their father and don't understand why they can't see him. They speak english when they count and prefer football over soccer, Mexico's favorite sport. Benigo is building a house for his children off of the money he gets for painting houses. In fact, the only way he could afford to pay for the hormone injections, was by painting the doctor's house because she was the one who really paid for it. When the sextuplets were asked about the house, they said, "He's painting it white, our favorite color."

I think anyone who wants to have children and anyone who wants to come to the U.S., should do so. I don't understand why the government and some of it's citizens wouldn't want immigrants to come to our country. When people complain about immigrants taking jobs, it's usually because that job is so low down and dirty that americans are either too lazy, or too stuck-up to take the job. This country is made of immigrants, except for the Native Americans, who were cruelly killed off by the English and Spanish. I don't understand why the government is mad that people want to come here. I would understand if people didn't want to come here, but they do. We should be privileged that people actually want to come to the Land of the Cheeseburgers and Home of Extremely Obese. It's not just Mexicans. People all over the world want to escape their countries for religious, political, social, and economic reasons, too. Isn't that what the first settlers came here for?

Pastor killed while preaching by Katelyn McLane

A Louisiana pastor was shot and killed by two bullets fired by a gunman. The pastor was preaching in front of 50 to 60 other people when the gunman ran in and shot him. The man ran away after the incident, but confessed what he had done later to the police. He was charged with second degree murder and was sent to jail. The man, Woodrow Karey, has no other criminal history, and his motives for killing the pastor are unknown.

I find this horrifying. It's so strange that some people will just run in and kill someone for no apparent reason. It's good that this man confessed what he had done, but he really shouldn't have done it in the first place. There are so many other ways he could have solved whatever problem he had with the pastor. I'm atheist, but a pastor would have to say something really awful to me for me to even hate him, let alone kill him. I hope that the pastor's family is doing alright after this terribly unfortunate incident.

A Bizzarre Explosion! By Jon Cope

A Bizzarre Explosion, By: Jon Cope

    Summary:
Last week, at Kissa Khwanni Market, Peshawar, Pakistan, at least thirty-three people were found dead, and many people injured. Only a week before in the same area, there was a double-suicide in the same area, in a church killing at least eighty people; only a few days after that, at least eighteen people workers were killed on a bus with a bomb explosion. At the market, police believe that a bomb exploded and caused this in a parked car next to the market. It is also believed that the local police station was the target of these attacks.

    Analysis:
I believe this is a horrible cruel act. Many innocent people are being tortured / killed by these vicious acts. I can not see any reason why anyone in the world would do this, especially to an innocent crowd trying to work. Besides that I can't see why they'd do this to a government building either.

Teen's vision: Help children see clearer by Angelica Fischer

High school freshman, Yash Gupta whose vision is very bad, broke his glasses and had to wait a week for new ones. Yash said those seven days were literally a blur. When he found out that more than 12 million children don't have the corrective eye-wear they need, Yash wanted to do something about it. Yash Gupta, who is now 17, collects used eyeglasses and donates them to children in need. Since 2011, he has given out about 9,500 pairs of eyeglasses worth nearly $500,000.

I think what Yash Gupta did was a very nice thing to do because a lot of children who need glasses don't even have glasses and with the help of Yash they can get glasses now. Then the children can learn a lot more and do better in school and of course see better.

Pastor shot during revival- Amanda Maceda

Late Friday night at around 8: 30, panic and death shot through the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center in Lake Charles, Louisiana. While Pastor Ronald J Harris Sr. was preaching to about 60 people in the Center’s nighttime revival, he was shot and died quickly. The shooter, Woodrow Karey, left the scene but called the local authorities and turned himself in. When they got to his location, he also showed them two guns, one a .22 pistol, the other the shotgun and murder weapon. His motive has not been uncovered, but police are still investigating.

Pilot has a Heart Attack by Anna Pickett

On a plane from Houston to Seattle, the plane had to do an unscheduled landing in Idaho. The pilot suffered a heart attack, and later died in the hospital. The emergency landing was handled well by the passengers on the plane. After the touchdown, firefighters took the pilot to the hospital. Another pilot was soon put on the plane to take the passengers to Seattle.
I think it's awful that the pilot died from his heart attack. I know that it was a natural cause, but I still feel really bad about it. I'm glad that they were able to safely land the plane. I don't always feel like planes are very safe, but after reading that, after an event like this, they were able to stay safe, it definitely makes me feel like planes are safer. My prayers go out to the pilot's family.

Same-sex Marriage Allowed in New Jersey by: Shadden Hashem

A state judge ruled Friday that same-sex couples must be allowed to marry in New Jersey, arguing that since the state already allows gay couples, it is illegal to prevent them from getting federal benefits. The judge ordered that same-sex marriages be allowed starting October 21. "It's an amazingly strong decision. We're very excited,"  said Troy Stevenson the executive director of the Garden State Equality group, "We've been saying for months that we were going to win marriage equality for New Jersey, and this was a total victory."  New Jersey is one of four states that offer civil unions, but not marriage to same-sex couples. Colorado, Hawaii and Illinois are the other states that follow this. Same-sex marriage is legal in 13 U.S states and the District of Columbia as well: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
I think it's great that New Jersey finally allowed same-sex marriage. I'm really happy with the judge's decision and standing up for citizens. I wish more states would follow New Jersey's example and do what I believe is the right thing to do in allowing people to marry who they want.

New drug to combat bee deaths- Julianne Swaykus

    m.thelocal.se/50494/20130928/
Scientists believe to have discovered a new medicine to protect bees against diseases in the US and Europe. The medicine consists of made from "lactic acid bacteria from the stomachs of healthy bees-- which they described as a major "boost" to bees' immune system and are hopeful that it could slow down the rate at which bees are dying." Researchers have worked on this for 10 years and are going to launch it at an annual meeting in Russian on Saturday. Some of the main factors of a bees immune system deteriorating are pesticides, parasites, stress and poor nutrition.
I am so glad that they have found a cure, because the bee population is decreasing drastically... I am personally very afraid or all insects (especially bees) but it is a very good thing that they have found a medicine to keep the bee population stable.

Transforming Piloted Planes in to Drones Andrew Tunell

On September 25 the first unmanned  Boeing F-16,  had its first test flight. Before now the F-16 has been a manned aircraft used for battle. This retired plane of 15 years was transformed into the first unmanned plane of its kind, and many other like it have been made by Boeing out of retired planes to be used as practice targets for pilots flying manned planes. This plane that flew for the first time in 15 years flew from a base in Florida to The Gulf of Mexico unmanned and managed to do several arial maneuvers on its way.

I think that although this is a good way to have practice adversaries for the pilots I think they could use this technology wise by fighting real battles with the unmanned planes to avoid any death. Also I think it is a waste of resources to use a flight worthy plane worth millions of dollars as target practice. I think they should use those planes in combat so we don't have to spend billions of dollars no new planes.

Rebuild Sandy Hook by Bette Rathjen

    http://www.wfsb.com/story/23549383/37-million-approved-by-state-to-rebuild-new-sandy-hook-school?hpt=us_bn7

After the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School this past December, decisions have been made to tear down the school and rebuild a new school. I think that it is great that they are rebuilding the school, especially because it is so hard to do anything involving after such a tragic event. I think they have made a good decision and that it will help us look forward on the future and get over a bump in the past. I think this article was written to tell us that they are making progress and not just sitting around mourning. We are looking forward no back and we can fix most disasters if we work together as a nation or state or city.

Baby found in NY River Eliana Perez

Authorities confirmed the remains found in an upstate New York river were of a baby boy reported missing from Utica in June, police said Saturday.

Extensive DNA testing, performed at the Onondaga County medical examiner's office in Syracuse, verified the baby was Levon Wameling, who was 10 months old when his father reported the child was taken while unattended from the house porch, authorities said.

After receiving information, state police divers found the baby in a container.

"The Utica Police continue to investigate this case, with the hope that the truth will be learned and the person(s) responsible are held accountable," Hauck said in a statement.

Earlier this month, the boy's father, Jevon Wameling, was arrested by New York State Police and accused of breaking into a home in a suburb of Utica to steal jewelry and money.

Hauck said then he wouldn't say whether the father had anything to do with the tip leading police to the remains, citing the ongoing investigation, there has been questioning from the start  about the boy's father from the start.

Wameling took two weeks to go to the police to tell them that his son was missing.

"Based on the information that he's given us, we have a lot of concern," Utica Police Chief Mark Williams said at the time.

"We have a problem with what he says," Williams said. "There's no question about it."

Meggie Hunt: Jane Austen ring bought back from Kelly Clarkson

Recently, a British museum was able to buy back a ring from from Kelly Clarkson that once belonged to Jane Austen. They purchased it on the grounds that the ring was "so closely connected with [Britain's] history and national life that its departure would be a misfortune." according to UK Culture Minister Ed Vaizey. The museum was able to buy bak the ring after fundraising enough money mostly due to a anonymous donor who pledged 100,000 dollars almost as soon as the donating started
I wanted to distract myself from the horror in kenya and thought this story was adequate. As a fan of Austen myself, I can understand why Clarkson would have wanted to keep the ring but all the same I do believe that the people had more of a right to see it on public display.

Chinese/ American Surrogate Parents by Kera Mickus

"Wealthy Chinese are hiring American women to serve as surrogates for their children, creating a small but growing business in $120,000 (74,962.5 pounds) "designer" American babies for China's elite." Just about summarizes the article.
Surrogacy agencies in China and the United States are provide surrogate services to the most wealthy Chinese people who cannot concieve or want their children to be U.S citizens.

I believe this is a great idea, but that China has the One-Child Policy for a reason. They are over-crowded and are trying to reduce the over population, and when people try to skip around this, it can create major problems. But it's a great idea for Chinese people who need surrogate help, or want their children already registered as U.S citizens.

Cherokee dad returns daughter to other family by SK hatcher

A 4 year old girl was returned to her adoptive parents after a custody battle with her biological father. We biological father Dusten Brown is a Native American living in Oklahoma. Brown is a member of the Cherokee tribe and used the Indian Child Welfare Act to gain custody of Veronica. On Monday night brown have the girl back to her parents. Last year he received custody of her, but now she is returned to her adoptive family.

Personally I'm worried about the girl. She's so young, if she lived with her biological dad for over a year she might not remember her adoptive family and now she's forced away from the man she's lived with to go back and he with them. I'm sure it must be hard, but she's so young that it'll probably blow over quickly for her, but I hope the process is easy in the little girl!

Five bodies pulled from massive Mexico mudslide by Paige Kutschall

    http://news.yahoo.com/five-bodies-pulled-massive-mexico-mudslide-232628007.html

Deadly storms in Mexico last weeks created an awful mudslide covering half of a village. 68 people were reported missing and police have only pulled out five. President Enrique Pena Nieto thinks there is little hope for finding anybody alive in the village. This mudslide happened on September 16, the country's Independence Day.

I can't belive such an awful natural disaster killed so many people. You never really think of mudslides as deadly. It is so sad that this happened on medicos Independence Day.

Son reunites with father after kidnapping by scarlet chimney

Twelve years ago , a boy was abducted by his own grandmother in Florida. The boys father went to work and when he returned home his son and the grandmother were gone. Police later on found the boy was allegedly abducted 12 years ago. The family was reunited and the woman's court date is in a few days
Crime in the cities are at the all time high it seems. You can't even trust your own family. I hope the woman goes to jail for a long time.

Pope has some surprising things to say by Eleanor E-W

Recently the Pope was interviewed. In the interview he said some very surprising things. He stated that he believed the church should not focus as much on gay marriage, abortion, and contraception.  The previous Pope was much more focused on these things and was interested in spending a lot of time teaching and enforcing them. While the current Pope, Pope Francis, is not all for gay marriage or abortion he believes in being less judgmental and focusing on more important issues.

I think this is really good! I’m a Catholic, and I think this is a step in the right direction for the church. I didn’t really like the last Pope because of how focused he was on being anti-gay and not on addressing more important problems in the world. I hope Pope Francis can change some of the views of the Catholic church.

Suicide Bomber Attack Kills Christians in Pakistan - by Frances Garnett

78 people were killed, and 130 injured, on Sunday when two Taliban suicide bombers attacked a church in Pakistan. It was the deadliest attack in the country’s history. The Jandullah group (part of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, an Islamic militant group, not directly related to the Taliban) claimed they were responsible for this attack, which they did in retaliation of US drone strikes, and went on to say that they will continue violence against non-Muslims until the strikes are discontinued. This group had already been responsible for two other attacks. Christians across the country are now protesting. In Peshawar, the city of the attack, they have blocked roads and burned tires, dead bodies and police uniforms. The Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack, saying it was against Islamic teachings and that it was wrong to target innocent people. Three days of mourning have now been announced.

It's interesting to read articles from other countries to get another perspective of a conflict, because then you don't just get the victim or the at-fault side. However, after looking at articles about this from CNN and Aljazeera as well as from the Times of India, all parties are in agreement that this was horrible tragedy. The article (see source) called the attack "brazen" and said that "People soaked in blood wailed for help as bodies lay strewn in the church's courtyard.” It’s actually very relieving to hear that the world is in agreement that this kind of bloodshed is wrong. Innocent people, including a Muslim policeman guarding the church, died, which goes to show that no matter what, violence is not the answer and will have negative consequences. But you do have to look at the United States drone strikes to find if they maybe had a reason to attack people. Unfortunately, I don’t have any prior knowledge of the reasoning to have these strikes, but even if I did, I would probably say that that is wrong as well. This article is significant in our lives because it shows us how ridiculous violence is. I am confused that the TTP attacked Christians, their own people, instead of Americans. But we need to stop turning to violence as well to solve problems, because we are also no doubt killing innocent civilians with our own strikes and attacks.

    Teenage Cannibalism by Polly Hynds-Riddle

A 13 year old and a 14 year old have been arrested after beating one's mother with original plans to eat her liver. the woman was found after being left by the two boys, she told the authorities that the boys had taken some "blue pills" which are definitely a hallucinogen. The boys left the house only to steal the 14 year old's father's car, commit a hit-and-run and rob a house. After the robbery an officer saw the two teens fleeing the scene and arrested them. the boys have been charged with "second-degree assault, taking a motor vehicle without permission, residential burglary , second-degree malicious mischief and hit-and-run"

i think the boys should nor have taken the pills but they did then it seems like the mother saw the two taking thew pills so it seems likes she could have stopped it. the boys stole the father's car which was obviously easily taken without the farther's notice. Overall i think there could have been more to prevent the things that happened.

62 killed in Westgate mall in Kenya during a 3 day hostage situation by: Samantha Stromness

Recently approximately 10 suspects (3 of which have been verified as Americans,) held up a high end  mall in Kenya killing at least 62 including a pregnant woman and injuring over a hundred more. They shot many children and mothers leaving many childless or orphaned and the trauma they inflicted emotionally and physically on the hostages was near unbearable. Not only is the crime in its self sickening, but also the media and general public's reaction to it. Kenya is a well developed country where such violent attacks are not necessarily "common"; if something like this had occurred in America it would have been all over the media and most likely immortalized as a tragic day to remember similar to that of 9/11. However, this attack has seemed to have barley scraped its way onto the morning news. I think such a horrendous crime like this should be regarded as a headline worthy tragedy regardless of the country it occurred in

2 teens plan to kill mother and eat her liver. By; Kindle Kelley

Two teens ages 13 and 14, planed to kill their mother and eat her liver. The 14 year old came up with the idea to cut her open and eat her liver. But, they failed, the 13 year old boy beat his mother with the end of the sword so he never actually cut her open. The mother is now in the hospital going through treatment after the beating. The mother had bloodied head injures, and was found by deputies on the floor of her home. The 13 year old later stated that he was taking "blue pills" and he would never do any such thing while he was sober. The mother was released Friday in a stable condition. The two boys are still in custody of the police.

How could anyone ever imagine or ever even think of doing this to their mother? The woman that brought you into this world. I think that this is so terrible, they wanted to kill her so that they could cut her open to eat her liver. In my personal opinion that is probably the most nastiest thing I have ever even heard of. Another human eat another humans body part? The two boys should go to jail for a long time. And if I was the mother I definitely would not want the boys back in my home. At least the police found them though, so they couldn't attempt to do it on anyone else. I am so glad that the mother lived so that she could tell the police.

    Hazing at Cornell

The entire men's lacrosse program at Cornell has been suspended this fall for a horrible hazing event that involved tying freshman together and forcing them to drink beer. "It's a team wide penalty for a team-wide incident." says John Carberry, a Cornell spokesman. The team will have to take anti-hazing classes and workshops. As you can see, hazing is taken very seriously at Cornell after a tragic incident occurred where a young man died while being hazed in 2011.

I think that it's great this is being taken so seriously, and I'm shocked that this kind of thing would happen. You would think that once the players heard about the boy who died being hazed that they would learn, but I guess not. It's a sad story and I'm glad that the team is being punished. Issues like this should be taken more seriously worldwide.

Record amount of cocaine found on French jet – Mia Sanchez

Record amount of cocaine found on French jet – Mia Sanchez

Earlier this month, a record amount of cocaine was found on an airplane going from Venezuela to France.  The 1.3 metric tons, or about 2,900 pounds of cocaine would have sold for over 67 million dollars.  The cocaine was packed in hard-sided suitcases and wrapped tightly in plastic.  What concerns me most is how someone managed to get over one ton of cocaine onto an airplane.  A link in the article shows a video in French showing about 30 suitcases worth of plastic-wrapped cocaine.  Personally, I think that just maybe, security in Venezuela needs just a little bit of tightening.

Coal, Not So Cool Anymore, By: Jon Cope

Coal, Not So Cool Anymore, By: Jon Cope

    Summary:
If you haven't already heard, China is the #1 user of coal. They don't use natural gases, or even nuclear power, but use thermal coal to fuel power plants. The Chinese once believed that it was an unlimited source, but now they might want to rethink what they thought. Also, these thermal coals they're burning are polluting the air. Because of all of this, the Chinese government plans to launch new nuclear reactor, which will reduce the need for coal. All over the globe, many coal exporters and coal mines have been shut down. Then again, China is full of coal, and instead of transporting it, they might find and use it themselves

    Analysis:
I think it's about time (Actually, past time) that the entire world stops using coals and chemicals that pollute the earth. I think it would be great if we all used solar energy or natural gases, as we've already started the greenhouse effect, why would we want to make it worse? With coal and other chemicals, the air becomes polluted, harder to breathe, harder to see through, and traps heat (especially in Texas).

Even More iPhones by Anna Pickett

At the release of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, Apple sold a record 9 million iPhones. Last year, at the release of the iPhone 5, Apple sold 5 million iPhones, meaning their sales have almost doubled since last year. The new iPhone 5s is similar to the iPhone 5, only faster. The iPhone 5c is only different because it has a polycarbonate shell.
I think what Apple is doing is very clever. Now, I'm not saying I agree with what they are doing, but they definitely know what they're doing. They continuously release new iPhones and iPods so that people will want to get the latest version of whatever they need. The Apple company knows that people have a natural instinct of wanting to be as good as everyone else. If we see that the new iPhone is coming out, we have a natural instinct of wanting to get it so that we aren't behind with the times, stuck with merely an iPhone 5 instead of 5s. Not only does Apple change the model, they also change things such as the charger cords and sizes, so that you will also have to buy a new charger cord and case. Apple has a very clever business plan, but it is also very sinister.

    Drunk....forever??? By: Adrienne Healy

Most people would start to get a little cross eyed after a few drinks but what about when you don't drink at all but still feel "drunk". 61 year old texas man suffered from a disease called got fermentation syndrome. For the past five years he would seem to be drunk all the time even when he didn't drink. "Only a few cases have been reported in the last three decades" according to Dr. Barbara Cordell, the dean of nursing at Panola College in Carthage, Texas, and Dr. Justin McCarthy, a Lubbock gastroenterologist, the study's authors. His wife would start to give in breathalyzers every day he would hit up to as high as 0.40 without have even a small sip. Drs. claims that he was a "closet drinker" but after several test they found out that stomach was turning his food into alcohol causing him to become drunk. After 24 hours under watch they were finally able to get all of the booze out of his stomach....but what I would like to know is will it ever come back??

NFL player arrested for the 5th time!! JULIA WOLTJEN

Summary: Adam "Pacman" Jones was arrested again for disorderly conduct. This is his 8th offense since he was drafted in 2005.  That means that he gets an arrest a year.....this is ridiculous.

Analysis: THIS IS RIDICULOUS! I mean nobody perfect but getting arrested every year, that's pushing it past the boundaries. i'm so tired of hearing about all these pro athletes committing crimes, I mean  it just a few months ago that one of the players was involved in a murder case. The NFL is ruining its name, something needs to be done.

Reagan Statue Torched by Bob Cummins

On Friday, September 20, it was discovered by a worker at the Ronald Reagan Sports Park in Temecula, California that the life-size Ronald Reagan Statue they had put up a year ago had been set on fire.  The now black statue stands in front of a damaged tile-wall.
"It's an insult to the president as well as to the community," says the founder of the Friends of Ronald Reagan Sports Park, Perry Peters.
Authorities still haven't found a suspect or know his motive for doing this.
They might have done it because of the plaque behind the statue, that explains why the statue was made.  It says that Reagan appreciated that the park was built through fundraising and volunteerism and not government handouts.
The park is now accepting donations to repair the statue.

This only was discovered this past Friday.  Vandals don't realize that they're not making a statement, but they're just ruining the park for everybody else.  My analysis of this story doesn't have to do with my opinion about Ronald Reagan.  It doesn't matter what one's political views are to see that this was a stupid and senseless act.  The one who's going to get the most trouble from this is the guy who did it.  This article was written for conservatives, but it can give a message to anybody.

    Voyager 1 Hannah Kerman

The Voyager 1 that was sent into space in 1977 has finally become the first human technology to leave the Solar System! Because it is no longer in the sun's gravitational pull, it is simply coasting as other star's gravity pulls it forward. Because Voyager 1 was sent in 1977 to explore Saturn but ended up going even farther, it no longer takes pictures and it takes 17 hours and 22 minutes for Voyager 1's signals to reach NASA. After the Voyager 1 was sent off in 1977, NASA sent another Voyager up as a "companion," that is now expected to leave the solar system as well, just in another area. The spacecraft is expected to keep sending back data until 2025, but in space, many things can go wrong or right. Overall compared to recent spacecrafts, the Voyager doesn't have very much space and right now, NASA is trying to figure out how to manually override the system and increase the amount of data that can be stored.
I think that this is amazing! As soon as other spacecrafts leave our solar system, we can get more data and more information to see if there are other life forms out there! Who knows what this amazing discovery could bring! Finally, we can begin creating other theories and proving how the solar system began! I think that this is very important also because with more technology and information, younger people in the world can start preparing themselves for when they are coming up with these theories!

"I will hurt you physicilly and metaphyisicilly" By Madelyn Winkelman

Hunter Spain, a student at Dinwiddie High School in Virginia , was requested to change the shirt he was wearing or to go home and select different attire. Hunter was wearing a famous Si Robertson t-shirt, with one of Si's quotes "I will hurt you physically and metaphysically" .He was asked to change because the school viewed it as someone giving off a threat to anyone who has not watched Duck Dynasty. Hunter was a good sport and changed shirts because " I'm not going to look stupid in front of all these young ladies in the school."

Really? He had to change!? I personally think this is rather ridiculous because lets be real, what teenager/fellow student would possibly view this as the wearer of the shirt giving off a threat? And the school said their reasons for this request is for those who have not seen Duck Dynasty, Hunter Spain lives in Virginia who hasn't watched it or at least heard of it in the South? Its just mind bobbling how this request was enforced but other dress code violations often go by without a single glance.

At least 25 dead after typhoon hits China -Allie Gonzales

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/22/world/asia/typhoon-usagi/index.html?c=homepage-t
    Summary:
25 people already confirmed dead after typhoon Asagi slammed into southern China Monday afternoon. Usagi has forced the evacuation of thousands of evacuations causing many flight cancellations, also leading to the closing of a major shipping lane. This is already known as the most powerful storm so far this year, and had menaced the region for days as a super typhoon. The storm also damaged havoc on transportation, forcing the cancellation of more than 300 flights. China is doing everything in they're power to repare the damage and hoping that all the residents will soon have a place they can call home again.

    Analysis:
I feel that although this situation will be very ha to overcome physically and mentally, China will be able to push through and  provide a safe home for their residents.

Wall of trees protects Wildlife by Josie Blossfeld

Summary: In Nairobi, Kenya's National Park, a program has been launched by private investigators, the M-Pesa Foundation, and a charitable trust called the Nairobi Greenline Project. The program will involve the planting of 300,000 trees, a 50-meter wide forest barricade around the park with a 32-kilometer electric fence. Here's an excerpt from the article I like: Dorothee Von Brentano, the Senior Human Settlements Officer at U.N. Habitat Kenya, says: "The fence is a symbol and a sign, to draw attention to an issue that needs to be much more properly addressed." This issue is what she calls an "ill hunger for land," the driving force behind the intrusion of urban development onto the park.

Analysis: I agree with what the park's officials have decided to do! I think for now it is best to have the tree barricade and fence, to protect the wildlife from the people until they learn to protect it themselves from poachers, etc. They can still grow as a city, just not into the wilderness they've left alone for the wild animals. Deforestation is still happening at too rapid a pace, and if we lose all our forests and natural habitats, there will be more endangered species that depended on those areas.

    Bus crash by: Shadden Hashem

An Ottawa double-decker bus plowed into a moving train on Wednesday September 18 at around 8:50 a.m., leaving six dead and at least 34 others injured. Investigators looked at several factors including whether the bus driver applied brakes, if the crossing signal worked properly and, more generally, what caused the collision.  They continue to search for clues of what could've happened. "Our job is to determine what happened and why," Laporte told reporters on Wednesday, "with the aim of ensuring that it does not happen again."
This is not something I have ever thought about happening before. I'm glad that the bus company's safety board is really looking into this and that they are determined to find a solution.
