A middle school teacher in North Carolina was suspended for three days for showing rap video "Same Love" by Macklemore. The school boards attorney, Joe Harbinson, said that the issue was whether the video was curriculum-based, educationally-related, and age appropriate. Macklemore said he wrote the song to make it easier to understand and an epiphany would emerge from it. The teacher is now back at the middle school.
I think that under the circumstances, the school board would have been in the right. In school, you can't try to persuade someones political, religious, or sexual beliefs. Unless the teacher was showing it because of a lesson that day in class, he/she shouldn't be showing the video, especially with a currently sensitive topic like gay rights.
I agree with you. The teacher should have thought about what she was doing.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Although i do think children should be educated of these things, i do not think that was the time.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kionna, Kindle, and Kegan! I mean it's good for students to learn about other people's religions and sexual beliefs, but the teacher just did at the wrong time.
