It's been reported recently by Spanish scientists that they have created the first self-healing polymer. The polymer can repair itself by itself without intervention. It's been dubbed the "Terminator" polymer.
The author said, "The fact that poly(urea-urethane)s with similar chemical composition and mechanical properties are already used in a wide range of commercial products makes this system very attractive for a fast and easy implementation in real industrial applications."
The scientists cut the polymer in half, pressed the pieces together, and left the polymer in room temperature for two hours. When they came back and stretched it, they discovered that the polymer healed itself.
This is definitely a scientific breakthrough that needs to be widely known. Like the 3D printer, this has potential in the industry of prosthetic limbs. From the video on the article page, the material looks like it's the same consistency of skin, and it can repair itself in a matter of two hours! This article was posted today, so it's current and an example of how technology is advancing faster and faster everyday. This technology is very new, and I didn't know anything about it.
This makes me feel like our world is turning more and more into a sci-fi movie. We keep on evolving our technology more and more. My question is: When will the techology take over?
ReplyDeleteIt's good to see that scientists are still pushing the limits of possibility. I don't think technology will ever 'take over' because there is really no way to program a computer to be human. People are getting closer but the human brain is not as simple as 1s and 0s
