Study Says Leukaemia Isn't Leaked to Living Near Power Plants - By Frances Garnett

A German study recently concluded that living near a power plant does not give children an increased risk of getting leukaemia. Leukaemia is responsible for a third of all cancers in children, and its possible link to power plants has been a worry for the UK ever since a TV investigation in the '80s reported that a higher number of children were diagnosed that lived near a power plant. Though there have been more studies ever since, this one looked at data of 10,000 children (aged five and under) who had leukaemia or a similar kind of cancer, where they lived, when they were diagnosed and then compared that to other data on childhood cancer, eventually coming to their conclusion. The Cancer Research UK stated that the study was reassuring, but due the small numbers it used and that it didn't look at data about plants that carried out other work, more research still needs to be done and power plants still need to be monitored.

I think this article was written to warn people about the dangers of nuclear power plants. Even though it says the study hasn't found a link, the article ended saying that we still couldn't be sure of it. Perhaps I am influenced by the negative effects of nuclear energy I've heard over years. That is why I agree with the last part of the article, saying that more evidence is needed. And also, why is leukaemia so prevalent among children? Where does it come from, if not from nuclear sources? I think this article is important because it brings awareness. I am still skeptical of the results from the study, so I draw the conclusion that we need to be extremely careful in our lives of how much exposure we get to nuclear power, even if studies aren't saying that.

  1. I don't think scientist will ever find the cause for cancer! There are so many bogus reasons that they come up with and like it says in this article they are are later proven to be untrue. While I don't think living near a power plant is healthy, I don't think it causes cancer.
