Now, I'm not an engineer or an architect, but I feel like it would be pretty obvious that you need to take the sun into account when designing a building. Especially if you're a trained architect and engineer, which I assume they are. It was very generous of Canary Wharf and Land Securities to pay for Lindsay's car to be fixed, and that they are really trying to fix this problem. They could just ignore all the complaints about cars melting, but they choose to help. They even admitted that they made a mistake. I think it's awful that this mistake occurred, but, if you're willing to make everything right, you're a good person in my book.

The Melting Cars by Anna Pickett
In London, a building has been constructed, nicknamed "The Walkie-Talkie," that actually melts cars. At a certain time of the day, the sunlight will reflect off it's curved surface. Any cars caught in the middle of the beam for a long period of time will start to melt. That's what happened to Martin Lindsay's car. The builders, Canary Wharf and Land Securities, agreed to pay Lindsay for what happened. The creators are talking with the businesses near the building to block of parking spots that are direct hit of the reflected light.

Dang. Good thing Martin wasn't in the car. There's a building here in Dallas damaging paintings at the Nasher with sunlight.
ReplyDeletei can't believe that! my gosh! i agree that it was a serious error but since they are willing to do everything they can to fix it then it is fine right now. :)
