Scientists are trying to clear Louisiana waters of brain eating bacteria. this bacteria took the life of a 4 year old while he was playing on a slip-an-slip. This type of bacteria is extremely rare but lethal and can be caused by the inhaling of infected water. It can only be contracted through the nasal passages so drinking the water is "fine". but when inhaled through the nasal cavities this bacteria can latch and multiply which will cause the brain to bleed.
I think that first of all they need to cut of all the water supplies and clean it. Just because it can be digested doesn't mean that they shouldn't take precautions. Then I think that they need to screen the surrounding population for this bacteria because it can be treated (as seen in a local Arkansas girl who recovered because of a new German drug). This shouldn't have happened in the first place if they had properly filtered the water.

Have they shut off access to this lake and is it affecting the tap water in Louisiana?

ReplyDeleteI wonder what happen to the Bactria when the water evaporates? Could you still catch it by just inhaling air near the affected water?
