Recently in Russia, there has been a ban on homosexual promotion or "propaganda" to children, fining individuals, groups or companies for displaying same-sex relations to minors in the media, on the internet, etc. MP Aleksey Zhuravlev just proposed an amendment (though other MPs are skeptical) to this ban that would extend it to families. If this were to be approved, then gay parents wouldn't be allowed to raise their children. In his proposal, Mr. Zhuravelv referenced a research study done at the University of Texas in Austin, the results claiming that children who have homosexual parents have more incidences of VD, more suicidal tendencies and less ability to "remain faithful to partners". Meanwhile, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has continually denied the accusations of homosexual discrimination, saying that he is working with representatives of the LGBT movement.
I absolutely and completely disagree with this new amendment. As I read the first paragraph of this article, it suddenly hit me how sickening it would be for one to be stripped of one's parental rights just because of their sexuality. The more sickening thing is that the other current legal reasons for stripping a parent of their rights is if they are an alcohol or drug addict or if they've tried to kill their child. I find it hard to believe that being gay should be even considered fitting into that category. Just calling displaying that it's okay to be homosexual to children "propaganda" emphasizes a huge issue Russia has at the moment, even though Mr. Putin denies it. I also think that the studies done to prove that children are better off with straight parents is absolutely ridiculous; they must have been done by a biased person with biased sources. This article is relevant in our lives today as a warning that shows us the extent of our prejudices and how they can (tragically) affect peoples' lives (imagine not being able to raise your own children). It is important that we draw the conclusion that we need to do something to oppose this injustice and help bring an end to homophobia.

I agree! This is a bit off the main topic, but I also think it's ridiculous that people that think gay people having parental rights is wrong always use the argument it would "turn them gay", seeing as many gay people grow/grew up surrounded by a media of mostly straight people and have straight parents, and it didn't "turn them straight".
ReplyDeleteI am against this ! Sexuality shouldn't play a factor in if you're able to raise a child or not !
