African-American couple Cherie Johnson and Dennis White say they were wrongly stopped by police, put in handcuffs and questioned during a weekend getaway in South Carolina. They say the incident happened because of their race. Johnson and White say they were on their way to Myrtle Beach for a quick romantic getaway when they pulled off the road and parked by a cotton field because Johnson had never seen cotton before and wanted to take a picture. When they walked back to the car, they noticed a police car parked behind theirs. White and Johnson says that the officer harshly questioned them about drugs and the cash he found in their bags. White said that Officer Shad Barfield told Johnson there was a warrant for her arrest, which she argued, and the officer backed off. He handcuffed White and then Johnson but did not arrest them. After carefully searching the car, the officer removed the handcuffs and let the couple go.White says he won't stop talking about the incident until officer is and punished.
This is really irritating especially since I am African-American. Unfortunately, we have been and will continuously be treated this way because of our race. Its not even just African Americans. A lot of people of from different races get racially profiled. The middle eastern people will always be targeted because of what people of their culture has done to the US. All I can say is that the officers and people in general who racial profile will never stop happening. We just have to hope these officers can be dealt with so we can go on with our lives.
and it all happened while they were standing next to cotton...
