A Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam has just announced that a new
van Gogh painting has been discovered.
The painting is called ‘Sunset at Montmajour’. It is considered the biggest discovery mad
(so far) by the Van Gogh museum. It was sold
in 1901, and only now given back. The museum says that it will appear in the
exhibit ‘Van Gogh at Work’ shortly.
I think it’s interesting that the museum is able to be sure
it is a van Gogh. In the article it
says that “Ruger said the museum attributed the painting to van Gogh after
"extensive research into style, technique, paint, canvas, the depiction,
van Gogh's letters and the provenance.’” I know very little about art, but after reading this I’m assuming that they must have people who study van Goghs and are able
to tell by studying the paintings whether it really is a van Gogh. I think that’s
a pretty interesting job--sort of like being an art detective.

I am surprised that they decided to publicly declare it a Van Gogh so quickly. But I guess that shows how sure they really are. Though, forgeries are no joke, but I think the museum would have waited to say if they were the least bit unsure
