7 Protesters Killed in Guatemala by Elaine Hennig

Seven people were killed Thursday in Guatemala when security forces clashed with protesters. The protesters, including those from 48 local communities, were blocking a highway known as Cuatro Caminos. They were protesting the high energy costs and an education reform that will increase the number of years needed for a teaching degree. 30 others were injured. Most of the victims had bullet wounds, but the government says that the forces were unarmed. It's possible that the shots came from the protesters themselves, though their leader blames the security forces. The Guatemalan president has offered an investigation.

This article is very factual, but it leaves you wanting more information, since we don't know where the shots originated from. It is obviously a negative influence on the reader, since people were killed and injured. It also shows the importance of peaceful assembly: the people have the right to show their opinions, just as long as it doesn't danger anyone. Hopefully the offer for an investigation will get carried out and solved.

  1. This is such sad news. People should be able to stand up for what they believe in without getting hurt in any way. :(

  2. I feel bad for the people who lost their lives, but I think those people are really brave and courageous to die for what they believe in.

  3. I think this article shows how much courage these people had to go out there, and pretest for what they thought was right.
