FARC rebels and Colombians Begin Peace Talks in Norway By: Nina Bharadwaj

On the very first day of peace talks between Columbians and FARC rebels, a point was made: Peace means more than simply putting down their weapons.
The two sides made their negotiations in Norway on Thursday. Their goal was to bring an end to the longest insurgency in Latin America. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has been at war with the government since the 1960's.
Past peace attempts have not ended well, but, now these sides say they are trying harder to make peace.
A representative of Colombia, Humberto de la Calle, stated "The end of the armed conflict is the precursor to peace. To achieve it, we have to go deep into the transformation of society."
A FARC representative , Ivan Marquez, agreed saying "We are not the guerrillas that some media make us out to be. We come to the table with proposals and projects to achieve a definitive peace, a piece that implies a demilitarization of the state and radical socioeconomic reforms that are the foundation of democracy, justice, and freedom."
Both parties say in a joint statement that they are committed to the "construction of a stable and lasting peace." But there is still a long distance remaining between the sides. For example, the Columbian government state that they will continue military operations against the FARC until a final agreement is made.
Also, even though the government has said the the FARC could continue to barrister for its positions as a political force, it doesn't want to talk about all of the groups demands durning the peace talks.
Humberto de la calle said that "This is about creating an agenda for the end of conflict that allows the FARC to put forth its ideas unaccompanied by weapons, and with guarantees for its transformation to an unharmed political force.
These talks first started in Norway, but will move to Havana, Cuba. Also, Chile and Venezuela have done a part in bringing these two parties together.
There have been many peace talks before, but they have fallen apart. The FARC continues to kidnap and attack forces, but have thankfully been severally weekend. Now, these two parties are hoping to finally reach peace.
Analysis: I think that the authors of this article, the CNN wire staff, wrote this article just to inform us about what is happening peace-wise in Colombia, between the political parties. They weren't biased towards either party. They explained both sides of the argument, and they didn't purposely say good things about one party, but not the other.
I am happy that these parties are trying to make peace, finally. There is no reason for fighting, especially when you live in the same country. I think that everyone just needs to make peace with each other. If people keep fighting like this, we are just going to be against one another. When we fight, nothing gets done. Fighting just causes more enemies. If people just talk to each other, and hear each others opinion, things will actually done. I just hope that once the parties in Colombia talk to each other, things will soon be peaceful.
