Police raid Brazilian slums

On Sunday, the police, military troops, and tanks raided two shantytowns in northern Rio de Janeiro. This attack was an attempt to retake some of the crime-ridden areas in Rio. More than 2,000 soldiers targeted Jacarezinho and Manguinhos to start their mission of securing the many slums before the World Cup in 2014. There were several arrests and the the police seized many weapons. Fortunately, there were no deaths on Sunday, but five drug dealers were killed on Saturday. This entire operation is an uphill battle, but the officials know it will be a long battle. More than one-fifth of the cities population live in a shantytown. I hope that the operation will be closed to finished whenever the olympics start so that the city will be safe for tourists.

  2. I think it's a good idea for the city to try to make it a better place especially with the amount of tourists the city will have soon.

  4. This is like putting a band aid on a gun shot wound. The people who want drugs will have them again tomorrow.
