Uruguay is about to become the first country to legalize the use and production of Marijuana. The Uruguayan Chamber of Deputies has already passed the bill and it is now being taken to the senate. The government already has a plan on how to manage the new market, and they believe that it will actually benefit the country. This new idea has sparked because of the confusing drug law in place now. The law as of now says that marijuana use is legal, but any production is not. This is the main reason for the new law. The passing of the bill is very likely, due to the majority of an agreeing party. This, however, is not how the people feel. In one poll, a vast majority voted against the legalization of marijuana.
I feel like the legalization of marijuana is dependent on the legality of cigarettes. As far as I know, there is not a lot of differences. Uruguay did the right thing changing the law to make it more clear, but they could have illegalized it and also solved the problem. The point of the whole thing was not to legalize marijuana, but to be more consistent in the laws that are in place. Making sure laws make sense and don't contradict is very important and is definitely something that other countries could do. As for the legalization of marijuana, I don't think it would make a whole lot of difference either way in the long run.

I agree with you. Before they start thinking about marijuana they should think about other laws and whether legalizing marijuana would be good based on those.
ReplyDeleteI agree that laws shouldn't contradict themselves and be stated more clearly. I also think that marijuana should be able to legalized because you can stop the illegal trade and selling of this drug and create a market to sell just like the government did with cigarettes.
