Hannah Menchu - Hugo Chávez’s reelection could increase Venezuelan exodus to South Florida

Posted by Hannah Menchu:

Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela, won re-election last week.  This means he will be president of Venezuela for six more years.  Since he became president of Venezuela six years ago the number of Venezuelans immigrating to the United States legally and illegally has increased.  Most of the immigrants go to Florida.

Now that he has been re-elected, people in Miami expect even more immigrants to come from Venezuela.  And not just poor people.  There is a law that if a foreigner with no criminal record invests $500,000 in rural or high unemployment areas they will be granted a two year visa to live in the US.  If the foreigner creates ten jobs for Americans the temporary permit can become permanent.

Realtors in the Miami area are now marketing to rich Venezuelans trying to help them invest.
