Protest Turns Deadly in Guatemala-Maddie Ash

In southwest Guatemala, 7 people were killed and 30 injured by security forces. The soldiers were called to a highway that about protestors from 48 local communities were blocking. Citizens gathered to protest high energy prices and other issues on a stretch of highway known as Cuatro Caminos. Carmen Tacan, the leader of the protestors, blamed the police and military forces for the deaths and demanded an investigation. "We are willing to make available the weapons that they may have been carrying, although they -- the soldiers -- had no weapons, but were equipped with tear gas," Perez Molina said. "We have information that it may have been the civilians who initiated the shooting and upon hearing this, the contingent of soldiers exited their vehicles to disperse and avoid harm."

  1. That is absolutely insane. 7 deaths and 30 seriously injured, what is this world coming to? There is just no excuse for that kind of behavior. You can't undo that damage. Let's hope that they can learn from their mistakes and move forward.

  2. My grandfather is from Totonicapan where this happened. Once my dad, mom, brother and me drove across Guatemala in the middle of the night. It was kind of scary. All the security have machine guns and a lot of them looked younger than me.
