South Africa mine dispute erupts in violence - Jack VanGorden

In Johannesburg, South Africa last Monday, nine mine employees were hurt by Anglo American Platinum security guards. The guards shot rubber bullets to try to break up an intense argument between rival union groups. The disturbance occurred at the company's Siphumelele mine. After the shooting, all of the employees were treated but none had any serious injuries. This is not the first time something like this has happened. Several other eruptions took place last fall. I hope that whatever these miners are fighting about is resolved so that there aren't any more outbreaks that cause serious damage.

  1. I also wonder what caused the fight. The sooner the problem is resolved, the sooner further injuries will be prevented.

  2. Why do they have to shoot them? Couldn't they just yell or maybe fire a blank but not bullets! Even if they are rubber.
