A 17 year old girl was raped and mutilated to death in Bredasdorp, South Africa. Anene Booyson's body was found on February 2 at a construction site near her home.
Tragedies like this happen too often in South Africa, where 71% of women report having been sexually abused, and violence against females is "systemic". However, Booyson's death has created an "outpouring of rage and emotion" from the entire country of South Africa. People chanting "No violence!" are marching through the streets of Bredasdorp.
Albert Fritz, a Western Cape provincial minister of social development, says many factors play a part in these violent attacks. For one, urban gangs are spreading throughout the countryside. Another is the abuse of alcohol in bars where drinks flow illegally. Finally, many perpetrators do not have any adult male role models in their lives.
At least 3 of Booyson's attackers, one of them being a close family friend, have been arrested and charged with murder and rape. Booyson's family has requested that authorities not give details about her injuries because of their severity. The funeral for the teenager will be on Saturday.
This is tragic. I mourn with the girl's family, and I hope the attackers serve the much deserved time for this horrible murder. Recently I have heard and read about more and more raping incidents in the news. I believe that rape is finally being brought to the public's eyes as a serious incident that occurs frequently and needs to be addressed and stopped. A local radio station in South Africa broadcasts a ping every 4 minutes, serving as a reminder that a woman is raped, on average, every four minutes in that African country. This needs to stop; no woman deserves to be mistreated and violated this way.

This is so sad. No one deserves to be treated this way. I hope the best for all these women.
ReplyDeleteWow, that really sad.
ReplyDeleteThere should be new rules/laws protecting their women from crime like that. How scared and nervous the women there must be.
ReplyDeleteI hope the last suspect is caught and that people begin to do things to lower the amount of rape that occurs.
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible. There needs to be more protection around these woman. I'm glad that they have arrested some of the suspects but I hope that they can get all of them.
ReplyDeleteThat is very sad they need to step up protection for women. I mean half the women have admitted to being raped. I hope all the suspects are found to bring justice.
