In the city of London, a newly under construction skyscraper is literally heating up the place. Its shape is built in an unusual curved fashion, similar to a concave lens. When the sun reflects off it, a more concentrated beam hits the streets beneath. The product of this, unfortunately, is the same affect that’s happens when you let sunlight go through a magnifying glass: things burn and melt. With the temperature of the buildings hotspot reaching 158 degrees farienheight, both the effects listed above have indeed occurred. The barbershop across the streets carpet has been set ablaze, a man fried an egg for breakfast, and an expensive luxury Jaguar XJ’s panel was melted after being parked there for under an hour. Another scary addition is that the architects are just as surprised as the bystanders. Lastly, with the suns rotation, the hotspot for this building will never be isolated to just one area. “Land Securities and Canary Wharf, the building’s developers, said the issue could remain for most of September and it was ‘evaluating longer-term solutions to ensure the issue cannot recur in future.’”
Honestly, I am very surprised and disappointed that no architects or developers noticed that the building had a dangerous flaw. That kind of heat could harm many if not fixed. Imagine if the barbershop was closed that day the carpet began to burn; the shop, and perhaps even its neighbors, would have been destroyed. Imagine if someone fell asleep in that Jaguar. I hope that if there are other buildings around the world being built in the same form, they will reconsider because of the problems in England. !58 degrees is a lot, much higher than Texas ever gets, and I can't imagine what it would be like to be in a place that hot. This building must have been absolutely remarkable, because London is also much cooler than here. I hope they stop construction soon and tear down the building, or else it will become even more dangerous as time goes on. This should serve as a lesson to future architects.
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible! They should be doing something about this! It is very unfortunate for people to be suffering over something that can be stopped. This is such a hazard for residence living there!
ReplyDeleteWow that's incredible. something the architects really should have thought about--at least they're trying to fix it! It worries me that architects could build a dangerous building without knowing it.
