On Saturday, February 2, 2013 the Egyptian Football Season began with no fanatics on the sidelines to cheer along. Why is this, you may ask. Truth be told the explanation is quite simple: a riot.
Last year during the opening of the Football Season, the fans of the two teams playing (Port Said and Cairo) got into a atrocious massacre. 74 people were found dead and 1,000 were injured. This later became called the "massacre at Port Said".
So, this year officials decided that no one should be able to attend the opening. They did not want a repeat of last year. Fans unfortunately will have to cheer on their teams from home.
Bad blood has existed between Port Said and Cairo teams for close to sixty years. It was no surprise that a fight broke out, but something as big as what they got was not expected. To the people of Egypt, Football is more than a sport, it's a way of life.
Analysis: I find this completely shocking. To hear about something the awful occurring in the world I live in chills me to the bone. Growing up in America, you never hear about our fans getting into fights, so when you become a teenager and realize that it actually does happen it frightens you so much. I believe that the persons of Egypt need some extra help from others countries, someone to step up and say "This is wrong, this needs to be fixed immediately. If we can accomplish that, we can accomplish anything.

ReplyDeleteDefinitely! I completely agree with you! I mean, SOMEONE needs to start paying attention. Things just can't go on this way. It's utterly barbaric, and not a world I want to live in. I say we bake some brownies for the people of Egypt ;)
