Outrage Over Gang Rape in South Africa: Amanda Kipp

Yesterday in Bredasdorp, South Africa, a 17 year old girl named Anene Booyson was gang raped then mutilated to death. Her neighbors even saying that "a dog would have been treated better." The saddest part is that this is a story that happens all the time in South Africa. Over 71% of women in the area say that they have been victims of sexual abuse. For some reason, Booyson's story has stirred an outrage in Bredasdorp and actually throughout most of the country. Hundreds of people marched the streets of Bredasdorp chanting "No violence, no violence!' Also, a group of women, some of which didn't even know Anene, buried a wooden cross near where police said the girl had been raped.

This is such a horrible and shocking story. Although I am sorry that Anene had to suffer and die I am glad that what happened to her brought awareness and outrage toward this kind of violence to not only the people of her town, but the people of her country.

  2. This is absolutely devastating, and for the fact that sexual abuse is a common thing for women and girls hits home with me.

Although it is encouraging that the community is coming to together against this issue, it is sad that it has had to come this far before people decide to do something about it.
