Pakistani girl nominated for Nobel Peace Prize- Margaret Canady

Malala Yousufzai, a 15 year old girl nearly killed by the Taliban because of her efforts to promote girls' education, has been formally nominated for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize. If Yousufzai were to win the Nobel Peace Prize, she would be the youngest recipient, and be one of just 15 female winners.

Yousufzai's name was submitted because of her "courageous commitment to the right of girls to education." She and two other girls were attacked in October when traveling home from school in Pakistan's Swat valley. The gun man got on the van, asked for her by name, then fired 3 shots at her. She was singled out because of a blog she wrote that criticized the Taliban for barring girls from receiving an education.

Yousufzai was flown to the UK for treatment, and now faces one last surgery that will place a titanium plate over the hole in her skull. Yousufzai has become a global icon for standing in what she believes in.

Malala's name was submitted by three Norwegian parliament members. Her name was one of the 231 names submitted this year for the Peace Prize, and the winner will be announced in October.

I am so in awe of Malala Yousufzai's bravery. This woman, a teenager my age, spoke out against the Taliban because of what she believed in. And they shot her! I am so glad that she has lived to spread her message and become a symbol for fighting for equality. This story also made me step back and remember how thankful I am for living in a country that gives me independence, freedom of speech, equality, and respect. I hope she continues to fight for her education, because she deserves it and so much more.
