Sexual Assaults Increase in Tahrir Square by: Rachel Devine

Female protesters at Cairo's Tahrir Square have been experiencing an increase in sexual violence recently. On Friday, 10,000 people gathered in the square on the 2 year anniversary of the start of the revolution that ousted President Hosni Mubarak. Many were harassed and Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault is doing the best that they can to provide treatment to the women that have been affected. Reports say that the violence has escalated; some attackers are now using knives or other weapons against the protesting women. At least 29 people were treated for cuts, broken bones, and other injuries. The chaos seems never ending.

I think this is awful. It is disgusting what these attackers are doing to the women and I just hope all the madness will end soon. I feel very fortunate to live in the US and not have to deal with horrible things like this.

  1. I think that its a good thing their protesting, but why does it have to be violent. Everyone should have freedom and rights. The men should think of the women and how it would feel to be them.
