No more foie gras in California by Josie Blossfeld

Summary
Today, a federal appeals court has upheld California's statewide ban on the French dish foie gras. The ban went into effect officially on the first of July, 2012. Before, though, the ban "interfered with interstate commerce and was too vaguely worded", according to plaintiffs. The ban prevents foie gras from being made or consumed in California.

Analysis
Before I begin, in my opinion, not everyone has to be a vegetarian, and I don't think it's right to treat people who are not any different from people who are. However, I also believe it's not right to consume food that you know had to be made through means that are cruel to animals. Ducks made into foie gras are force fed a specific type of food through machines and forced to live in tight living spaces with other ducks, which spreads disease very quickly throughout a group. A lot of the food we buy in grocery stores is even made through processes that could be considered cruel to animals such as this one. Therefore, I agree with the ban and I'm glad it's being upheld. I think it's a needed small step towards making meat-food products without hurting animals! There's a big difference between being humanely raised and then killed for food (the circle of life argument) and being force fed or abused and then killed for food. What are your thoughts? Do you think they could have achieved the same thing another way that still allowed foie gras to be made?

  1. That's wrong. Just saying. Ducks don't need to be fat, but I personally am a vegetarian, so i guess my opinion doesn't count.

  2. I think that the people of California should be able to chose what they eat. Now saying that I totally don't agree with the way that these animals are treated, so I think that they should try and find the happy medium between the 2.

    1. I agree with that too! I think maybe they could have avoided banning it completely and also not harmed the animals

  5. as a vegetarian, I would have to agree with the ban. I think people should be allowed to eat what they want--but I agree with you that when it involves torturing animals it shouldn't be allowed!

    1. Yeah, same! I wish they had figured out how to still make foie gras without hurting the animals, but I guess this way was a quicker alternative.
