The Russian LGBT Community
Russian authorities arrested more than 100 gay men in Chechnya, including tv stars and religious figures, for "nontraditional sexual orientation." The Novaya Gazeta newspaper reported that three of the arrested men have been killed, while others were released for family honor killing. Chechen Republic leader Ramzan Kadyrov's spokesperson said this report contains “absolute lies and disinformation” since there are no homosexuals in Chechnya. Russia's legal treatment of the LGBT community has been one of the worst human rights violations in the post soviet era.
I found this story to be one of the most interesting that I have heard in a while. This is because when I think about LGBT people being mistreated I always only think about it here in the U.S. When I think about Russia I'm only thinking about the countries they are doing business with or who they want to start a war with. I forget that many countries around the world are handling the same things we are, though not always as well.
