French Air Assault on Kidal- Maddie Ash

The French have made much ground, but many fear that rebels may regroup in the mountains near Kidal.
After a three week offensive in Mali, French warplanes carried out air strikes to secure the final rebel stronghold of Kidal. Thirty jets targeted Islamist militants' training and communication centres around Tessalit near the Algerian border. While the French president has pledged to help rebuild Mali after the rebels who seized its north are beaten, there are still fears that the fighters could regroup in the mountains near Kidal. French troop have captured the airport, but the rebels have control of the town itself. A total of 3,500 French troops are in Mali and will begin chasing down Islamist militants who have retreated to desert or to mountainous hide-outs. Timbuktu was recaptured by French and Malian forces last week. Nearly 2,000 soldiers from Chad and Niger are already helping consolidate the recent gains. Another 6,000 troops will be deployed as part of the UN-backed African-led International Support Mission to Mali.

  1. A whole lot is going on that I had no idea about... Timbuktu seems like it's always a place that someone is trying to capture. I wonder why.

  3. I did my article on something like this. It is horrible. It is so weird how something so big could be going on in another country, and we never know about it. I think that it is great of France to help Mali in its time of need. That is very gracious of them . It is awful that Islamist militants cam just take over Mali for no good reason whatsoever. They have banned daily things that all of us do. Imagine if we couldn't do things that are normal to us. That would be awful. I am glad to be living in America where we can do normal everyday things.
