Slaying of Girl Causes Outrage in Africa by: Rachel Devine

In a tiny, rural town about two hours away from Cape Town, a teenage girl was found dead after being raped and mutilated. The girl, Anene Booyson, was able to recall one of her attackers before she died. Although statistics show that rape is common in South Africa, something about Booyson's death was different. It brought a new awareness to the issue and stirred outrage in the town of  Bredasdorp. Hundreds of people marched in the streets of the small town chanting "No violence! No violence!" Her brutal death was the "tipping point" to the issue of rape in South Africa. The whole nation is outraged at how inhumane her death was. Her death is bringing much attention to the violence that surrounds South Africa.

I think this is appalling. It makes me so sad that so many girls are affected by this; it said every 4 minutes a girl is raped in Africa. I can't even begin to put my mind around those numbers. I pray that all the cruel things stop happening and my prayers go out to the poor Anene Booyson and every other girl affected.

  1. I wish that it didn't take the deaths of so many girls for this to be an issue. Even so, I'm glad that her death was not in vain. They have identified at least one rapist, and the community is getting involved.
