In Egypt, a place obsessed with football, the football season kicked off Saturday but there were no fans in the stands. It has been the first kick-off since the last-time when there was a huge riot because Port-Said Al-Masry beat Cario's Al-Ahly 3 to 1. The fight ended up killing 74 people and injuring 1,000. Fans from both of the teams bashed one another with rocks and chairs and many of the people that died fell off the bleachers or suffocated. There has been a long feud between the Port-Said and the Carios for about 60 years. The Port-Said people felt betrayed by Egyptian security forces during a series of wars with Israel. In addition, some say Cario has not invested enough in Port-Said infrastructure, and that their city doesn't reap enough tax benefits from trade with international ships that pass through Port-Said via the critical Sue Canal. In Egypt football helped people escape from the economic, political and social tumult hitting the country.
