Secret Service agents directly guard the president, | vice-president, and their families |
US Secret Service agent Rafael Prieto was under investigation for failing to report a relationship with a foreign woman. He died in an apparent suicide. The behavior of all Secret Service agents has been under intense scrutiny since a prostitution scandal in Colombia. Agents are required to report to the Secret Service any relationship with a foreign citizen to make sure there is no risk to national security. Rafael Prieto admitted that he had been having a long-term affair with a woman from Mexico. An agent involved in the Colombia scandal made the Secret Service aware of the relationship because he felt that the agency wasn't enforcing its rules consistently. Prieto's relationship is not thought to be a threat to national security. He was found in his car Saturday with the engine running and his death is believed to have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. The death is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police in Washington, D.C. "Rafael Prieto had a distinguished 20-year career with the Secret
Service that was marked by accomplishment, dedication and friendships," said agency spokesman Edwin Donovan. "The Secret Service is mourning the loss of a valued colleague."

This is a very sad story. The men and women who choose these types of jobs sacrifice so much and based on this article, their personal lives are not separate from their work.
ReplyDeleteReporting affairs with people from other countries seems like it invades these people's lives a bit too much.... :T
