Longest serving death row inmate to get retrial- Andrew Tunell

The worlds longest serving death row inmate Iwao Hakamada, was released last thursday. After spending 48 years in prison for a quadruple homicide, Hakamada was released after DNA testing miss proved the primary evidence. This is the sixth case of a death row inmate being released in China. Hakamada was primarily kept in solitary confinement like most other death row inmates this has left his mental health deteriorating.

I think this is really awful that someone had to spend such a long time in prison for something they did not do. Spending all these years in prison ruined this man's life and he did not even commit the crime. This is really shocking to me that this is the sixth time this has happened, I really think China needs to fix their legal system.

  1. It sounds like they just didn't go as in depth as the should have with the evidence. That would be terrible to have to go through all of that for a crime you didn't commit.

  2. It's awful how many innocent people have been on death row. Sadly, many of them weren't released, so they were killed before proven innocent. I wish things like this would never have to happen.

  3. I hope that this man will be able to cope with normal life after being in prison so long. The death penalty and prison treatments are both controversial, which is why this is so interesting. Should prisons be allowed to put people in solitary confinement, even if they are a quadruple murderer? Also, it's a bit odd how China has released multiple inmates after they've been proven guilty, so I agree - maybe China does need to take a look at their legal system when many people treated badly were wrongly convicted.
