Leftover Women - Max Gaddis

Women in China are rebelling against their families and "tradition" by not marrying. Women not married after the age of 27 are considered "old maids" in China. One woman claims that she is richer being single than she would be if she were married. Another says that men are still living in the old ways of China, but women have come away from that. But one's opinion is that only men benefit from marrying, not women. This opinion is in the minority of all the women in China, but it's getting to be a new trend. Another reason women don't want to get married is because of domestic violence against women. Even though women don't realize they are being abused, they will admit their husband hits them. China also does little to protect women's rights, so chinese women do not get the same divorce rights as american women, and stay-at-home mothers get even less. Also, women don't get the same share of home owners payments (although the court says that women are entitled to their share, but they don't keep the receipts). Many women are upset about these laws, but because of the way their government is set up, they can't really do anything about it. What do you think?

I think they are right to do so, because i really have no intentions of getting married also.

  1. Agreed. I say they should keep this rebellion/ marriage strike going until their government changes things for them.

  2. I agree, if the women don't want to get married they don't have to. I think they should keep doing what they are doing till the government changes the laws that are upsetting the women.
