The Church of England Consecrates First Female Bishop by Bella Dekhtyar

The Church of England, a 500-year institution, finally consecrated their first woman bishop, Libby Lane, today. Despite several protests of it being, "Against the Bible," the majority of vote showed in favor of a female bishop. Last year, the church finally ended a dispute on allowing women to serve as bishops, after being a male-dominated institution for over 500 years. There has also been some criticism that the decision was simply made as a "symbolic gesture." Mrs. Lane states, "I may be the first, but I won't be the only."

I believe this relates to World History because it ties to women rights and the suffrage movement. Since the addition of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution [giving women the right to vote], women have expanded in politics and leadership not only in America, but everywhere across the globe. Although there are definite improvements to equal treatment for both sexes, it is still a question among many other countries. I believe this is an important step in society because it brings us a step closer into gender equality.
