Although it has been 2 years since Nigeria's last polio outbreak, government has had to enforce mandatory vaccinations, in light of recently found children paralyzed by poliovirus in Borno. With the steady progress in wiping out Polio unraveling, citizens can only hope with vaccinations the virus will be contained. "This is truly disappointing because Nigeria had made extreme progress with their control of polio virus" director of WHO polio eradication center, Micheal Zaffrun says.

This story in relevant to history because it could possibly be the beginning of another polio epidemic, and if the strain mutates or we don't have enough vaccine then the disease will spread and cause worldwide panic. The author of the article listed above most likely used the article to spread awareness of the cause, i believe this because the article makes a point to stress how devastating this will be if the epidemic spreads, and how they had made such good progress and its important it stays that way.

  1. Polio has a vaccine that can eradicate the disease. If this outbreak occurred in the US, our country would
Immediately immunize all people living in the country...so why not in Nigeria?

  2. that must have been a real shock for nigeria, especially since it had been such a long period of time since the last polio outbreak. i hope this doesn't last much longer, and that the vaccinations prevent the disease spreading.
