13 Injured in Mine Union Fight- Maddie Ash

Thirteen South African miners have been injured in during fights between two rival unions in Rustenburg. Security guards fired rubber bullets at a mob as they attacked union stewards with machetes and other sharp objects at the Anglo American Platinum mine. The rubber bullets injured 9 miners and four guards were wounded in the fight. Last August, police had to kill 34 miners during violent wildcat strikes. That shooting sparked a national outrage. The mob attack is thought to have taken place between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) - allied to the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party - and the militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU). Police spokesman Thulani Ngubane said they may have been fighting over the occupancy of union offices at the Anglo American Platinum's Siphumelele mine shaft in Rustenburg, 60 miles north-west of Johannesburg.

  1. At least they were using rubber bullets so people were only injured instead of killed.
