Ivory Coast man sets himself alight at Rome airport by Amaria Stern

A young man from Ivory Coast, located on the western border of Africa, lit himself on fire while being deported from Italy. He survived, but is said to be badly burnt. He was not the only migrant who has been reported to illegally cross the Mediterranean from Africa. To carry out his "stunt", he hid the fuel in his suitcase. A police officer witnessed him covering himself with the fuel with a light in his hand, but wasn't able to get to him before he set himself on fire. A customs official helped him to take off his shirt after she saw that his arm was on fire. She then used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. They were both taken to the hospital.

This was a fairly interesting article and I would really like to know the true motive behind this. Hearing about someone lighting himself on fire can be somewhat amusing, but the reasons behind it are probably nothing to laugh at.

  1. That's almost sad that he would rather light himself on fire than be deported. The woman who helped put out the fire must have been very brave.
