Mumbai Building Collapses by Corsica Steding

In a suburb of India's financial capital, 74 people were killed when a building collapsed.  Rescue workers stopped looking for survivors last Saturday.  There were also 35 people injured, who were still at hospitalized on Saturday.  It was not clear how the building collapsed.  Some of the apartments in the building were already occupied even though the building was still undergoing construction.  Local authorities said that the building was being constructed illegally.  The builder had not filed any plans for the building, and was building it on forest land where construction isn't allowed.  Jamil Quereshi and his partner Salim Sheikh (the builders) are being investigated by the police.

Megha Bahree wrote this article on April 6th.  Before reading this article, I hadn't heard of any incidents where a building collapsed. Of course, I knew that it was possible. I just hadn't heard of it happening before.  This article was written to inform people of this terrible event.  I can't believe that the builders let people move in to the building before it was finished.  They had to have known that it wasn't very safe.

  2. This is definitely a good example of why building needs to be certified before it happens.

  3. That is horrible. It is so wrong of the builders letting people move in to the building before it was completely constructed. Shouldn't professional builders know better than to put people's lives at risk like that. It makes me question the authority of these builders. They may be amateurs just looking for a way to make a large amount of money fast. I feel so bad for the people that were harmed due to the falling of the building. These were just innocent people having better homes built to better their lives, but instead of that, the exact opposite happened.

  4. The builders were doing something illegal and need to be punished accordingly. If they had filed plans and constructed legally, these deaths wouldn't have happened. There was a reason officials did not want things to be built on this area, and because they weren't certified, 74 people were killed.
