On Monday, Indian police arrested a second suspect connected with the rape of a 5 year old girl in New Delhi, India. The first man arrested in the case, Manoj Kumar, claimed this second suspect was an accomplice.
Manoj Kumar was the 5 year old girl's neighbor, and is accused of kidnapping her on April 14, locking her in his house, and raping her repeatedly. She was found semi-conscious 3 days later. Doctors had to remove objects from the girl's genitals, but her condition now is stabilized.
The girl's family accuses the police officers of trying to bribe them to keep quiet about the case; these allegations are being investigated by senior police officials. Recent attacks and India's media coverage of rape cases have set off enraged protests in India and around the world. The attacks have brought up questions about the treatment of women and the violent crimes against children. The Asian Center for Human Rights recently reported statistics of 48,338 child rape cases in India between 2001-2011.
Hearing about rape cases always angers me; there is something really wrong with a person that has to rape a 5 year old child! I believe one of the reasons it has taken so long for these rape cases to be brought to the world's attention is the lack of police enforcement. The police were trying to bribe a family to "keep quiet"? These men need to be punished for their actions and this kind of behavior needs to be stopped. Immediately.
