Kate Boyer-Jerusalem needs more space to bury their dead

Right now there is a cemetery in Jerusalem that has over 200,000 graves and almost every single one is full. The cemetery has graves in the ground outside and also in a 3-story building, and they still need more space. Architects have already begun working on the project. There is going to be an underground graveyard with enough space for approximately 22,000 dead people and will end up costing around $50 million. People will have to follow ancient traditions when they bury their dead. Instead of putting the corpse in a coffin, they will be placed directly a stone platform. Underground burial grounds have been around since B.C.E. and are still used to day, an example being The Catacombs in Paris. The architects behind the design are hoping to bring back the nearly extinct traditions. This project is a temporary solution and will take roughly 5 years to complete.
I think this is a great solution, but I'm curious as to what they will do after all of the new spots are filled up.

  1. So interesting...how do the spots get filled up so quickly? Is there really not any more room to bury the deceased? I am so glad that they found a temporary solution and will hopefully give them more time to find a more permanent solution.
