Turmoil in Catalonia by Corran Nolan

Artur Mas, head of the CiU, is making headway in his goal for Catalonia to be not just a province of Spain, but to be part of the European Union as its own free country. Even  though the CiU lost 12 of its seats in the election, it is still the majority leader. The call for the separation of Catalonia from Spain came after an argument over government funding. Catalonians feel they are bearing a disproportionate amount of weight from the economic crisis, being one of the wealthiest regions of Spain. But there are still many trials ahead, namely the Prime Minister and the Popular Party. They are very much against the separation of Catalonia because of the 40 Billion Euros in debt and 1-out-of-4 unemployment rate. Though, through all of the obstacles, Mas is going full force ahead int his goal for the separation.

This article is important because we have not had a country split from another to create a new country for a long time. This also shows that the power that the Euro once had is now slowly diminishing because of bad decisions made by both the European Union and the countries that make it up. I don't know how this will turn out, but however it does, it will certainly be interesting to see how the countries deal with this.
