Reactor Shutdown on Three Mile Island! by Maddie Ibarra

The power plant at Three Mile Island shut down unexpectedly on Thursday. A reactor coolant pump failed and the power plant's automatic system shut off. Even though the failure only happened in one of the four reactors, all where shut off at once for inspection. This was the second time that the reactor has been shut down in a month. The first time was when there was a leek ing the heating system used for pressurizing water. The system was replaced and has been up and working since September 5. There have been no major problem with the reactors ever since 1979 when Unit 2 was shut down because of a partial meltdown. The incident still remains to be the worst commercial nuclear accident in U.S. history.
Im glad that these power plant workers are able to easily and swiftly fix any problems with these reactors. If they were not able to do their job correctly and as well as they do, we could all be at a nuclear poisoning risk or risk having a full scale meltdown.

  1. The use of nuclear power is suppose to be very efficient, but nuclear power plants are so dangerous. It is good there are so many safety alerts and checks in place to avoid a full meltdown or possible leak.

  2. I'm glad they caught the problem, or it could have been really bad. Great article!
