The New Coral Reef Research Center By: Zaria Chambers

On Thursday, September 27, 2012 in Hollywood, Florida Nova Southeastern University opened its 50 million dollar coral reef research center. The university hopes to take its marine biology program to a new level. This research center is located on the tip of John U. Lloyd State Park. “It is the largest such facility in the United States dedicated only to coral reefs”, says Richard Dodge, the Dean of NSU’s Oceanographic Center. The center also boats the largest salt water filtration in the United Sates. This system holds several 5,000 gallon tanks to create fresh, clean water for use in the laboratories.

  1. I think that it is a really good idea for scientists to be focusing on coral reefs. They are a natural beauty that is often ignored. Our human pollution has been killing them, which not only affects us but all of the underwater fishies & friends that rely on them.

  2. It's great to see that a research center like this is going to be operating. It will help marine animals, marine plants, and humans because the ocean plays a big role in human life.

  3. I agree, having a facility dedicated to coral reefs will have a positive influence on us. All questions that scientists have had about coral reefs will be answered now which will change our perspective on the sea, hugely. I also like that they are having 5,000 tanks to have fresh water in laboratories. So much water is polluted nowadays that being able to study freshwater will be a positive thing.
