Istanbul, Turkey- Fazil Say, a famous concert pianist, was just sentenced to 10 months after posting insulting tweets last year. The tweets made fun of Islamic descriptions of heaven. In Turkish laws, it is illegal to publicly insult a belief. To many, Say's sentence is a threat to freedom of speech, but to others, it is a comfort to know that the law is being upheld. The sentence, however, is suspended, meaning Say won't have to serve unless he commits a similar crime within the next 5 years.
Turkey's laws about freedom of speech are obviously a lot different than they are here. In the United States, insulting someone else is not considered a crime in any way.Though Say's sentence may seem unjust, he did technically break the law, and the Turkish government believes he should be punished for doing so.
